Falls, associated injuries and fear-of-falling are common in adults with RA. Fear-of-falling can be a major consequence of, and as debilitating as falling, resulting in a cycle of activity restriction, reduced quality of life, institutionalisation and potentially increase risk of falls. The objective of this study was to examine the relationship between fear-of-falling and risk factors associated with fear-of-falling in adults with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) over a 1 year period.

Five hundred fifty-nine patients with RA were recruited from four outpatient clinics in this prospective cohort study. Baseline assessments included socio-demographic, medical and lifestyle related risk factors. Fall incidence was prospectively obtained monthly using postal cards over a 1 year period. Fear-of-falling was assessed at baseline and 1 year using the Short Falls Efficacy Scale-International (Short FES-I). Logistic regression was used to determine the association between high fear-of-falling (Short FES-I > 11) at basnot they have previously fallen.
Fear-of-falling is significantly associated with previous falls and predictive of future falls and fear. RA patients would benefit from fall prevention measures whether or not they have previously fallen.
Altered circulating levels and genetic variation of B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), has been associated with lower bone mineral density (BMD) values and incidence of osteoporosis in peritoneal dialysis patients, renal transplant recipients, and postmenopausal women. The potential relationship of circulating BNP with osteoporosis in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), however, has not yet been studied.

Circulating BNP levels were measured in 314 patients with T2DM, and participants were divided into normal BMD group (n = 73), osteopenia group (n = 120), and osteoporosis group (n = 121). The association of circulating BNP with diabetic osteoporosis and other parameters was analyzed.

Circulating BNP was significantly higher in diabetic osteoporosis subjects than normal and osteopenia groups (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05). Circulating BNP levels correlated significantly and positively with neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, systolic blood pressure, urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio, and prevalence osteoporosis, and may be a potential biomarker for diabetic osteoporosis.

Progress is being made with the development of ontologies, taxonomies, methods for mapping interventions, and coding schemes; however, consolidation is needed to improve levels and quality of theory use, and to facilitate the translation of theory-driven research in practice. This paper discusses the importance of rigorous theory application and reporting in health-related behaviour change research and outlines the need for a standardised framework that supports both researchers and practitioners in designing, implementing, and evaluating theory-driven interventions in a concrete and consistent manner. To this end, several recommendations are provided to facilitate the development of a standardised framework that supports theory application and reporting in the behaviour change field. Concrete and consistent theory application and reporting will permit critical appraisal within and across studies, thereby advancing cumulative knowledge of behaviour change over time.
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths across the world. Early detection of lung cancer by low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) can reduce the mortality rate. However, making a definitive preoperative diagnosis of malignant pulmonary nodules (PNs) found by LDCT is a clinical challenge. This study aimed to develop a prediction model based on DNA methylation biomarkers and radiological characteristics for identifying malignant pulmonary nodules from benign PNs.

We assessed three DNA methylation biomarkers (PTGER4, RASSF1A, and SHOX2) and clinically-relevant variables in a training cohort of 110 individuals with PNs. Four machine-learning-based prediction models were established and compared, including the K-nearest neighbors (KNN), random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and logistic regression (LR) algorithms. Variables of the best-performing algorithm (LR) were selected through stepwise use of Akaike's information criterion (AIC). The constructed prediction model was compared wither.
We have shown that integrating DNA methylation biomarkers and radiological characteristics could more accurately identify lung cancer in subjects with CT-found PNs. In this study, we examined psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Resilience Scale (RS) and parenting-related factors associated with resilience among disaster-exposed adolescents.

Eighteen months after the earthquake, a total of 1266 adolescents (43.4% male, mean age = 15.98; SD = 1.28) were assessed using the RS, the Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Self-Rating Scale, the Depression Self-rating Scale for Children, the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Emotional Disorders, and Parental Bonding Instrument.

Through exploratory factor analyses (EFAs) and parallel analysis, responses were characterized into a 3-factor structure personal competence, meaningfulness, and acceptance of self and life. Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the RS was 0.89 and the test-retest reliability coefficient was 0.72. In terms of predictive validity, resilience was found to be a significant predictor for PTSD, depression, and anxiety. Multiple regression analysis showed that maternal parenting styles were significant predictors of resilience after adjusting for gender, age, sibling number, and earthquake experiences.
