Stingless bees have been recognized as essential plant pollinators and producers of various natural products in neotropical areas. Research into the potential risks of pesticides they may be exposed to in agricultural fields, however, remains meagre. Especially the toxicity of pesticide mixtures likely to occur under real-world conditions and that are likely to exert synergetic effects has been poorly studied. The aim of the present study was therefore to evaluate the single and mixture acute contact and oral toxicity of commercial products containing the insecticide abamectin and the fungicide difenoconazole in laboratory bioassays with the Brazilian native stingless bee Melipona scutellaris. In addition, a comparison of the insecticide sensitivity of stingless bees relative to the honeybee Apis mellifera was made based on previously published toxicity data. Except for oral exposure to abamectin, M. scutellaris appeared to be more sensitive that A. mellifera in the single compound toxicity tests. A difenoconazole concentration at the NOEC (no observed effect concentration) level indicated a synergetic toxic interaction with abamectin. A sensitivity comparison based on published toxicity data for A. mellifera and stingless bees indicated several insecticidal modes of action having a high relative sensitivity to stingless bees that need especial consideration in future studies. The research findings highlight the need for testing native bee species and environmentally relevant pesticide mixtures in risk assessments to avoid underestimation of potential risks to bee populations and the subsequent loss of pollination ecosystem services. The advent of global warming events on already stressed organisms by pollution and loss of habitats raised concerns on the sustainability of local mussel populations. The purpose of this study was to study the physiology 6 commonly found species of freshwater mussels in the attempt to identify species at risk from global warming and pollution. The following species were examined for mass/length, energy metabolism, air survival and lipid peroxidation (LPO) Elliptio complanata (EC), Eurynia dilatata (ED), Pyganodon cataracta (PC), Pyganodon species (Psp), Lasmigona costata (LC) and Dreissena bugenis (DB). The data revealed that the estimated longevity of each species was associated with mussel mass, mitochondria electron transport (MET), temperature-dependent MET but negatively related with mitochondria levels in LPO and the colonization potential. The colonization potential was derived from the scaling of MET activity and mass, which confirmed that DB mussels are more invasive than the other species followed by Psp. Resistance to air emersion was significantly associated with longevity, mass and length and mitochondria LPO. Hence, organisms with low lifetimes, mass or length with high LPO are less able to survive for longer periods in air. In conclusion, longevity and air survival was positively associated with mass and energy metabolism but negatively with oxidative damage. This study proposes key markers in identifying species more at risk to contaminant stress, decreased water levels and global warming.Fish cell spheroids are promising 3D culture models for vertebrate replacement in ecotoxicology. However, new alternative ecotoxicological methods must be adapted for applications in industry and for regulatory purposes; such methods must be cost-effective, simple to manipulate and provide rapid results. Therefore, we compared the effectiveness of the traditional hanging drop (HD), orbital shaking (OS), and HD combined with OS (HD+OS) methods on the formation of zebrafish cell line spheroids (ZFL and ZEM2S). Time in HD (3-5 days) and different 96-well plates [flat-bottom or ultra-low attachment of round-bottom (ULA-plates)] in OS were evaluated. Cenicriviroc CCR inhibitor Easy handling, rapid spheroid formation, uniform-sized spheroids, and circularity were assessed to identify the best spheroid protocol. Traditional HD alone did not result in ZFL spheroid formation, whereas HD (5 days)+OS did. When using the OS, spheroids only formed on the ULA-plate. Both HD+OS and OS were reproducible in size (177.50 ± 2.81 µm and 225.62 ± 19.20 µm, respectively) and circularity (0.83 ± 0.02 and 0.80 ± 0.01, respectively) of ZFL spheroids. Nevertheless, HD+OS required a considerable time to completely form spheroids (10 days) and intensive handling, whereas the OS was fast (5 days of incubation) and simple. OS also yielded reproducible ZEM2S spheroids in 1 day (226.23 ± 0.57 µm diameter and 0.80 ± 0.01 circularity). In conclusion, OS in ULA-plate is an effective and simple spheroid protocol for high-throughput ecotoxicity testing. This study contributes to identify a fast, reproducible, and simple protocol of single piscine spheroid formation in 96-well plates and supports the application of fish 3D model in industry and academia. The population aging on the Autism Spectrum (AS) faces disproportionate physical and mental health comorbidities. This research describes self-care practices, including physical activity (PA), nutrition, and spirituality, and the impact of these practices on the health and well-being of older adults on the AS. Researchers conducted semi-structured interviews (N = 30) with older adults (age 50+ years) on the AS on the following topics health, employment, relationships, and services/supports. Data were analyzed using Dedoose software and a constant comparative method. Participants described self-reported health benefits of their PA. Participants who engaged with organizations reported receiving instrumental support and fulfillment. Several themes emerged regarding socialization and routines in self-care in older adults on the AS, which may inform interventions.
Myeloid sarcoma (MS) is a rare disease, mostly found in conjunction with acute myelogenous leukemia or other diseases, and primary nonleukemic MS of the spleen is particularly rare.
We report a 57-year-old male who presented with a spleen mass that was found incidentally, and was enlarged. As a result of various examinations, he was diagnosed with primary MS of the spleen with suspected involvement of the transverse colon, left kidney, pancreatic tail, and left diaphragm. He underwent a total splenectomy, partial pancreatectomy, partial colectomy, left nephrectomy, and left diaphragm partial resection. Histological examination revealed splenic primary MS. Bone marrow biopsy and immunophenotypic flow cytometry revealed no evidence of myeloid leukemia. He underwent umbilicalcord blood transplantation, and he is currently living without a sign of recurrence at 10 months after surgery.
We experienced a very rare case of primary spleen MS that was discovered without a hematologic malignancy. Two cases of surgically resected primary splenic MS have been reported, including the present case.

Startle syndromes are heterogeneous groups of disorders with abnormal and exaggerated responses to startling events, including hyperekplexia, stimulus-induced disorders, and neuropsychiatric startle syndromes. Hyperekplexia can be attributed to a genetic, idiopathic, or symptomatic cause. Excluding secondary factors, hereditary hyperekplexia, a rare neurogenetic disorder with highly genetic heterogeneity, is characterized by neonatal hypertonia, exaggerated startle response provoked by the sudden external stimuli, and followed by a short period of general stiffness. It mainly arises from defects of inhibitory glycinergic neurotransmission. GLRA1 is the major pathogenic gene of hereditary hyperekplexia, along with many other genes involved in the function of glycinergic inhibitory synapses. While about 40% of patients remain negative genetic findings. Clonazepam, which can specifically upgrade the GABARA1 chloride channels, is the main and most effective administration for hereditary hyperekplexia patients. In this review, with the aim at enhancing the recognition and prompting potential treatment for hyperekplexia, we focused on discussing the advances in hereditary hyperekplexia genetics and the expound progress in pathogenic mechanisms of the glycinergic-synapse-related pathway and then followed by a brief overview of other common startle syndromes. The "Alice in Wonderland syndrome" (AIWS) is a neurological disorder characterized by altered body schema perception, visual, or somesthetic symptoms, which is frequently associated with migraine. In this article, we present the earliest known description of symptoms attributable to AIWS in the medical literature. During a lecture held on November 22, 1887, at the Salpêtrière, Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893) examined a patient with somesthetic symptoms (partial macrosomatognosia) in the context of migraine with aura. Although this condition was not known at the time, Charcot tried to provide an accurate semiological and nosographic framework of this case, attributing the complex of symptoms to migraine with aura and epilepsy with sensory symptoms. With intellectual honesty and clinical prudence, Charcot correctly pointed to a disturbance in the excitability of cortical areas responsible for processing and perceiving sensory stimuli.Latina women report disproportionately high and increasing prevalence of chronic health conditions (obesity, diabetes) related to low physical activity levels. Efforts to date at addressing high rates of physical inactivity in this at-risk population have shown modest success. The original Seamos Saludables (sample size N = 266) was a culturally and linguistically adapted, print-based physical activity intervention that showed significant increases in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) from baseline to 6 months. However, only 11% of intervention participants reached the national PA guidelines of ≥ 150 min/week of aerobic MVPA. The current study tests the original Seamos Saludables intervention (Original Intervention) against an enhanced iteration Seamos Activas II (Enhanced Intervention). Study aims and intervention refinements focus on increasing the percentage of Latinas meeting national aerobic PA guidelines. For the current study (Seamos Activas II), a randomized controlled trial with (N = 199 vention participants meeting guidelines compared to 44% of Original Intervention participants, OR = 1.66, 95% CI 1.09 -2.89. Models suggest trends favoring the enhanced condition for improvements in biomarkers over 6 months. Findings indicate that the intervention enhancements likely helped more Latinas achieve nationally recommended, health enhancing PA levels than the original intervention and showed promise for improving physiological response to exercise.Trial Registration ClinicalTrials.Gov; NCT02630953.
