For stereotactic radiation therapy of intracranial malignancies, apatient's head needs to be immobilized with high accuracy. Fixation devices such as invasive stereotactic head frames or non-invasive thermoplastic mask systems are often used. However, especially stereotactic high-precision masks often cause discomfort for patients due to along manufacturing time during which the patient is required to lie still and because the face is covered, including the mouth, nose, eyes, and ears. To avoid these issues, the target was to develop anon-invasive 3D-printable mask system with at least the accuracy of the high-precision masks, for producing masks which can be manufactured in the absence of patients and which allow the eyes, mouth, and nose to be uncovered during therapy.

For four volunteers, apersonalized 3D-printed mask based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data was designed and manufactured using fused filament fabrication (FFF). Additionally, for each of the volunteers, aconventional thermoplastic stereotactic high-precision mask from Brainlab AG (Munich, Germany) was fabricated. The intra-fractional fixation accuracy for each mask and volunteer was evaluated using the motion-correction algorithm of functional MRI measurements with and without guided motion.

The average values for the translations and rotations of the volunteers' heads lie in the range between ±1 mm and ±1° for both masks. Interestingly, the standard deviations and the relative and absolute 3D displacements are lower for the 3D-printed masks compared to the Brainlab masks.

It could be shown that the intra-fractional fixation accuracy of the 3D-printed masks was higher than for the conventional stereotactic high-precision masks.

Here, we report fossil n-alkyl lipid biomarkers and their associated δ13C values across a newly discovered Olduvai Gorge site (AGS) dated to 1.84 million years ago, enabling a multiproxy analysis of the distributions of critical local landscape resources across an explicit locus of hominin activity. Our results reveal that AGS was a seasonally waterlogged, largely unvegetated lakeside site situated near an ephemeral freshwater river surrounded by arid-adapted C4 grasses. The sparse vegetation at AGS contrasts with reconstructed (micro)habitats at the other anthropogenic sites at Olduvai Gorge, suggesting that central-provisioning places depended more heavily on water access than vegetation viz. woody plants as is often observed for modern hunter-gatherers. As hominins at AGS performed similar butchering activities as at other Bed I sites, our results suggest they did not need the shelter of trees and thus occupied a competitive position within the predatory guild. The present work focuses on investigating the effect of non-fluoro short-chain alkylsilane treatment on the surface characteristic of date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) fiber. Raw date palm fiber (DPF) was treated with octylsilane and the surface properties of treated fiber was investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), contact angle analysis and X-ray diffraction (XRD) on configuring the thermal stability, chemical structures and surface properties (morphology, hydrophobicity and crystallinity). The decomposition temperature of 75% mass loss raw and treated DPF, the onset of temperatures were increased from 464 to 560 °C with the introduction of alkylsilane. Hydrophobicity and crystallinity index of the DPF fibers were increased from 66.8° to 116° and 31 to 41, introducing octylsilane to raw DPF. The SEM and XRD experimental results showed that the octylsilane treatment could effectively increase the pore size and crystallinity index as an indication of the removal of non-crystalline cellulosic materials from DPFs. Thermal stability, hydrophobicity and crystallinity of the fibers increased on DFP after alkylsilane treatment. The results indicated that alkylsilane-treated DPFs were a suitable reinforcing substitute for hydrophobic polymer composite. Two distinct types of rare crystal-rich mafic enclaves have been identified in the rhyolite lava flow from the 2011-12 Cordón Caulle eruption (Southern Andean Volcanic Zone, SVZ). The majority of mafic enclaves are coarsely crystalline with interlocking olivine-clinopyroxene-plagioclase textures and irregular shaped vesicles filling the crystal framework. These enclaves are interpreted as pieces of crystal-rich magma mush underlying a crystal-poor rhyolitic magma body that has fed recent silicic eruptions at Cordón Caulle. A second type of porphyritic enclaves, with restricted mineral chemistry and spherical vesicles, represents small-volume injections into the rhyolite magma. Both types of enclaves are basaltic end-members (up to 9.3 wt% MgO and 50-53 wt% SiO2) in comparison to enclaves erupted globally. The Cordón Caulle enclaves also have one of the largest compositional gaps on record between the basaltic enclaves and the rhyolite host at 17 wt% SiO2. Interstitial melt in the coarsely-crystalline enclaves is compositionally identical to their rhyolitic host, suggesting that the crystal-poor rhyolite magma was derived directly from the underlying basaltic magma mush through efficient melt extraction. We suggest the 2011-12 rhyolitic eruption was generated from a primitive basaltic crystal-rich mush that short-circuited the typical full range of magmatic differentiation in a single step.Birds are a kind of environmental indicator organism, which can reflect the changes in the ecological environment and biodiversity, and recognition of birdsongs can further help understand and protect birds and natural environment. Extreme learning machine (ELM) has the advantages of fast learning speed and good generalization ability, which is widely used in classification and recognition problems. Input layer weights and hidden layer thresholds are two key factors affecting ELM performance. As one of swarm intelligence optimization methods, differential evolution (DE) can be used to optimize the parameters of ELM. In order to enhance the diversity, convergence speed and global search ability of the DE population, and improve the accuracy and stability of the classification model, this paper proposes a multi-strategy differential evolution method (M-SDE) to optimize the parameters of the ELM. And the differential MFCC feature parameters, extracted from birdsongs, are applied to build classification models of M-SDE_ELM and an ensemble M-SDE_EnELM with optimized ELM for bird species recognition. In the experiments, the ELM models optimized by the swarm intelligence algorithms PSO and GOA are compared and analyzed by hypothesis tests with the M-SDE_ELM and M-SDE_EnELM. Results show that the M-SDE_ELM and M-SDE_EnELM can achieve a classification accuracy of 86.70% and 89.05% in the classification of nine species of birds respectively, and the recognition effect and stability of the M-SDE_EnELM model outperform other models. This monocentric study conducted at the Pediatric and Adult Hemoglobinopathy Outpatient Units of the University Hospital of Essen summarizes the results of hemoglobinopathies diagnosed between August 2018 and September 2021, prior to the introduction of a general newborn screening (NBS) for SCD in Germany (October 2021). In total, 339 patients (pts.), 182 pediatric [50.5% males (92/182)] and 157 adult pts. [75.8% females (119/157)] were diagnosed by molecular analysis. The most common (parental) descent among affected pts. were the Middle Eastern and North African/Turkey (Turkey 19.8%, Syria 11.8%, and Iraq 5.9%), and the sub-Saharan African region (21.3%). Median age at diagnosis in pediatric carriers [N = 157; 54.1% males (85/157)] was 6.2 yrs. (range 1 (months) mos.-17.8 yrs.) and 31 yrs. (range 18-65 yrs.) in adults [N = 53; 75.2% females (115/153)]. Median age at diagnosis of homozygous or compound-heterozygous disease in pediatric pts. (72% (18/25) females) was 3.7 yrs., range 4 mos.-17 yrs. (HbSS (N = 13) 2.5 yrs., range 5 mos.-7.8 yrs.; HbS/C disease (N = 5) 8 yrs., range 1-8 yrs.; homozygous/compound heterozygous β-thalassemia (N = 5) 8 yrs., range 3-13 yrs.), in contrast to HbH disease (N = 5) 18 yrs. (median), range 12-40 yrs. Hemoglobinopathies represent a relevant health problem in Germany due to immigration and late diagnosis of second/third generation migrants. SCD-NBS will accelerate diagnosis and might result in reduction of disease-associated morbidity. However, diagnosis of carriers and/or disease-states (i.e. thalassemic syndromes) in newly immigrated and undiagnosed patients will further be delayed. selleck products A first major step has been taken, but further steps are required.Emerging evidence has shown that circular RNAs (circRNAs) play vital roles in the progression of diverse human diseases. However, the functions of circRNAs in preeclampsia (PE) are largely unknown. In this study, we aimed to explore the functions of the circRNA furin, paired basic amino acid cleaving enzyme (circ_FURIN) in PE development. qRT-PCR and western blot analyses were conducted to determine the levels of circ_FURIN, miR-34a-5p and transcription factor AP-2 alpha (TFAP2A). A Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and a 5'-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) incorporation assay were utilized to evaluate the cell proliferation ability. Transwell assays were adopted to estimate cell migration and invasion. A dual-luciferase reporter assay and an RNA pulldown assay were utilized to analyze the relationships among circ_FURIN, miR-34a-5p and TFAP2A. It was found that circ_FURIN was downregulated in PE placental tissues and hypoxia-treated placental trophoblast cells. Overexpression of circ_FURIN promoted trophoblast cell proliferation, migration and invasion under hypoxic conditions. Circ_FURIN functioned as the sponge for miR-34a-5p. MiR-34a-5p overexpression abrogated the effects of circ_FURIN on the proliferation, migration and invasion of trophoblast cells under hypoxic conditions. In addition, TFAP2A was demonstrated to be the target gene of miR-34a-5p. TFAP2A silencing ameliorated the promotive effects of miR-34a-5p inhibition on trophoblast cell proliferation, migration and invasion under hypoxic conditions. In conclusion, circ_FURIN enhanced trophoblast cell proliferation, migration and invasion under hypoxic conditions by elevating TFAP2A expression through sponging miR-34a-5p.There are no therapeutics that directly enhance chronic endothelial nitric oxide (NO) release, which is typically associated with vascular homeostasis. In contrast, angiotensin II (AngII) receptor type 1 (AT1R) blockers (ARBs) can attenuate AngII-mediated oxidative stress, which often leads to increased endothelial NO bioavailability. Herein, we investigate the potential presence of direct, AngII/AT1R-independent ARB class effects on endothelial NO release and how this may result in enhanced aortic wall homeostasis and endothelial NO-specific transcriptome changes. Treatment of mice with four different ARBs induced sustained, long-term inhibition of vascular contractility by up to 82% at 16 weeks and 63% at 2 weeks, an effect reversed by L-NAME and absent in endothelial NO synthase (eNOS) KO mice or angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor captopril-treated animals. In absence of AngII or in tissues with blunted AT1R expression or incubated with an AT2R blocker, telmisartan reduced vascular tone, supporting AngII/AT1R-independent pleiotropism.
