This study aimed to analyse the effect of 10 weeks of a highly concentrated docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) + eicosapentaenoic (EPA) supplementation (ratio 81) on strength deficit and inflammatory and muscle damage markers in athletes. Fifteen endurance athletes participated in the study. In a randomized, double-blinded cross-over controlled design, the athletes were supplemented with a re-esterified triglyceride containing 2.1 g/day of DHA + 240 mg/day of EPA or placebo for 10 weeks. After a 4-week wash out period, participants were supplemented with the opposite treatment. Before and after each supplementation period, participants performed one eccentric-induced muscle damage exercise training session (ECC). B022 Before, post-exercise min and 24 and 48 h after exercise, muscle soreness, knee isokinetic strength and muscle damage and inflammatory markers were tested. No significant differences in strength deficit variables were found between the two conditions in any of the testing sessions. However, a significant effect was observed in IL1β (p = 0.011) and IL6 (p = 0.009), which showed significantly lower values after DHA consumption than after placebo ingestion. Moreover, a significant main effect was observed in CPK (p = 0.014) and LDH-5 (p = 0.05), in which significantly lower values were found after DHA + EPA consumption. In addition, there was a significant effect on muscle soreness (p = 0.049), lower values being obtained after DHA + EPA consumption. Ten weeks of re-esterified DHA + EPA promoted lower concentrations of inflammation and muscle damage markers and decreased muscle soreness but did not improve the strength deficit after an ECC in endurance athletes.This work deals with anomalous concentrations of natural mordenite in the southeast of Spain. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies evidenced that the samples contain mainly monomineral zeolitic phase of mordenite (70% to 74%), usually accompanied by smectite (montmorillonite), the principal component of bentonite. A study of the applicability of these zeolites is presented to establish the potential use as pozzolanic cements. For comparative purposes, synthetic commercial mordenite is also characterized and tested. The initial mixtures were prepared using cement and mordenite at a 7525 ratio. Chemical analysis and a pozzolanicity test showed the high pozzolanic character. These mixtures were further added to sand and water, yielding the cement specimens to be used as concrete. Mechanical test results showed that the mechanical compression at 7 and 28 days fall into the range of 19.23 to 43.05 MegaPascals (MPa) for the cement specimens built with natural mordenites. The obtained results fall in the same range of cement specimens prepared with natural clinoptilolite, using mixtures within the European requirement for commercial concretes. Thus, these results and the low cost of natural mordenite of San José de los Escullos deposit supports the potential use of natural mordenite as pozzolanic cement.Respiratory diseases are a major problem in the pig industry worldwide. Due to the impact of these diseases, the early identification of infected herds is essential. Computer vision technology, using RGB (red, green and blue) and thermal infrared imagery, can assist the early detection of changes in animal physiology related to these and other diseases. This pilot study aimed to identify whether these techniques are a useful tool to detect early changes of eye and ear-base temperature, heart rate and respiration rate in pigs that were challenged with Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae. Clinical observations and imagery were analysed, comparing data obtained from animals that showed some signs of illness with data from animals that showed no signs of ill health. Highly significant differences (p less then 0.05) were observed between sick and healthy pigs in heart rate, eye and ear temperature, with higher heart rate and higher temperatures in sick pigs. The largest change in temperature and heart rate remotely measured was observed around 4-6 h before signs of clinical illness were observed by the skilled technicians. These data suggest that computer vision techniques could be a useful tool to detect indicators of disease before the symptoms can be observed by stock people, assisting the early detection and control of respiratory diseases in pigs, promoting further research to study the capability and possible uses of this technology for on farm monitoring and management.This study aimed to investigate the shear capacity performance for eight deep beams with HTRB600 reinforced high strength concrete under concentrated load to enable a better understanding of the effects of shear span-depth ratio, longitudinal reinforcement ratio, vertical stirrup ratio and in order to improve design procedures. The dimension of eight test specimens is 1600 mm × 200 mm × 600 mm. The effective span to height ratio l0/h is 2.0, the shear span-depth ratio λ is 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9, respectively. In addition, the longitudinal reinforcement ratio ρs is set to 0.67%, 1.05%, 1.27%, and the vertical stirrup ratio is taken to be 0%, 0.25%, 0.33%, 0.5%. Through measuring the strain of steel bar, the strain of concrete and the deflection of mid-span, the characteristics of the full process of shear capacity, the failure mode and the load deflection deformation curve were examined. The test results showed that the failure mode of deep beams with small shear span-depth ratio is diagonal compression failure, which is influenced by the layout and quantity of web reinforcement. The diagonal compression failure could be classified into two forms crushing-strut and diagonal splitting. With decreasing of shear span-depth ratio and increasing longitudinal reinforcement ratio, the shear capacity of deep beams increases obviously, while the influence of vertical web reinforcement ratio on shear capacity is negligible. Finally, the shear capacity of eight deep beams based on GB 50010-2010 is calculated and compared with the calculation results of ACI 318-14, EN 1992-1-12004 and CSA A23.3-04, which are based on strut-and-tie model. The obtained results in this paper show a very good agreement with GB50010-2010 and ACI 318-14, while the results of EN 1992-1-12004 and CSA A23.3-04 are approved to be conservative.The biological aim of root canal treatment is to facilitate periapical tissue healing following endodontic therapy. This study aimed to develop an organotypic infected root canal model to understand the interaction of bacterial biofilm with macrophages and study the therapeutic effect of engineered bioactive chitosan nanoparticles (CSnp) on macrophages. Ex-vivo experiments were conducted in two phases; Phase-1 Enterococcus faecalis biofilms (two and six weeks old) developed in organotypic root canal model were used to characterize residual biofilm after conventional chemical treatment alone and combined with CSnp utilizing Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy and colony-forming units from pulverized dentin. Phase-2 The interaction of post-treatment biofilm and RAW macrophages was evaluated regarding pro/anti-inflammatory markers, cell viability and spreading at 24, 48 and 72 h. Compared to conventionally disinfected six-week-old biofilm, CSnp resulted in less viable bacteria (p less then 0.01). Scanning electron micrographs demonstrated disruption of the biofilm. CSnp exhibited less residual bacterial load in pulverized dentin (p less then 0.001). Macrophage interaction with CSnp-treated biofilm reduced proinflammatory markers (nitric oxide, TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6), increased anti-inflammatory marker (TGF-β1) and enhanced cell survival and spreading over time (p less then 0.01 at 72 h). Engineered chitosan nanoparticles concurrently inactivated biofilm and altered the inflammatory response of macrophages that would promote healing.Hands are the most frequent burn injury sites. Appropriate rehabilitation is essential to ensure good functional recovery. Virtual reality (VR)-based rehabilitation has proven to be beneficial for the functional recovery of the upper extremities. We investigated and compared VR-based rehabilitation with conventional rehabilitation (CON) in patients with burned hands. Fifty-seven patients were randomized into a VR or CON group. Each intervention was applied to the affected hand for four weeks, and clinical and functional variables were evaluated. Hand function was evaluated before intervention and four weeks after intervention using the Jebsen-Taylor hand function test (JTT), Grasp and Pinch Power Test, Purdue Pegboard test (PPT), and Michigan Hand Outcomes Questionnaire (MHQ). The JTT scores for picking up small objects and the MHQ scores for hand function, functional ADL, work, pain, aesthetics, and patient satisfaction were significantly higher in the VR group than in the CON group (p less then 0.05). The results suggested that VR-based rehabilitation is likely to be as effective as conventional rehabilitation for recovering function in a burned hand. VR-based rehabilitation may be considered as a treatment option for patients with burned hands.Although obesity is considered osteoprotective, the effects of body fat and fat distribution on bone tissue after adjusting for the effects of body weight remain uncertain. This study evaluated the relationships between fat mass, fat distribution, and bone mineral status beyond its weight-bearing effect. We recruited 466 children aged 6-10 years in China. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to determine the bone mineral density (BMD) and bone mineral content (BMC) in the total body and total body less head (TBLH), as well as the fat mass (FM) and percentage fat mass (%FM) of the total and segmental body. Weight-adjusted measures of FM and %FM were derived using the residual method. After adjusting for the effects of covariates, we observed statistically significant, dose-dependent negative relationships between the TBLH·BMD/BMC and various weight-adjusted measures of body fat (p for trend less then 0.001-0.038). For each standard deviation increment in the weight-adjusted total body, TBLH, trunk and limbs, the size-adjusted BMC decreased approximately 9.44, 9.28, 8.13, and 6.65 g in boys, respectively, and by approximately 13.74, 13.71, 7.84, and 12.95 g in girls, respectively. Significant inverse associations between FM accumulation in the total body and most body parts with the BMD/BMC were observed in both boys and girls after adjusting for weight and potential confounders.The purpose of this prospective cohort study was to investigate the influence of the salivary microbiome on the worsening of the periodontal health status among Japanese young adults. We assessed the data of systemically healthy and non-smoking young (18-22 years) university students (n = 457) from Okayama University at baseline (2013) and follow-up (2016). The worsening group was defined based on an increase in the percentage of bleeding on probing (%BOP) or an increase in probing pocket depth (PPD) from 0.05). The prevalence of some species was significantly higher in the worsening group than in the non-worsening group (p less then 0.05) in both cases. The worsening of the periodontal health status was associated with some species, but not the type of community and diversity in the salivary microbiome among Japanese young adults.
