Recent data suggest that musical practice prevents age-related cognitive decline. But experimental evidence remains sparse and no concise information on the neurophysiological bases exists, although cognitive decline represents a major impediment to healthy aging. A challenge in the field of aging is developing training regimens that stimulate neuroplasticity and delay or reverse symptoms of cognitive and cerebral decline. To be successful, these regimens should be easily integrated in daily life and intrinsically motivating. This study combines for the first-time protocolled music practice in elderly with cutting-edge neuroimaging and behavioral approaches, comparing two types of musical education.

We conduct a two-site Hannover-Geneva randomized intervention study in altogether 155 retired healthy elderly (64-78) years, (63 in Geneva, 92 in Hannover), offering either piano instruction (experimental group) or musical listening awareness (control group). Over 12 months allparticipants receive weekly trainal and structural brain plasticity.

The Ethikkomission of the Leibniz Universität Hannover approved the protocol on 14.08.17 (no. 3604-2017), the neuroimaging part and blood sampling was approved by the Hannover Medical School on 07.03.18. The full protocol was approved by the Commission cantonale d'éthique de la recherche de Genève (no. 2016-02224) on 27.02.18 and registered at clinicaltrials.gov on 17.09.18 ( NCT03674931 , no. 81185).

Previous studies have suggested that patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) have higher prevalence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), and plasma levels of free fatty acids (FFAs) are a useful marker for predicting ASCVD. We hypothesized that FFAs could predict both coronary and carotid lesions in an individual with type 2 DM (T2DM). The present study, hence, was to investigate the relation of plasma FFA level to the presence and severity of coronary and carotid atherosclerosis in patients with T2DM.

Three hundred and two consecutive individuals with T2DM who have received carotid ultrasonography and coronary angiography due to chest pain were enrolled in this study. Plasma FFAs were measured using an automatic biochemistry analyzer. Coronary and carotid severity was evaluated by Gensini score and Crouse score respectively. Subsequently, the relation of FFA levels to the presence and severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) and carotid atherosclerotic plaque (CAP) in whole individuals were aAD and CAP in patients with T2DM, suggesting that plasma FFA levels may be a useful biomarker for improving management of patients with T2DM.
Global investments in neonatal survival have resulted in a growing number of children with morbidities surviving and requiring ongoing care. Little is known about the caregivers of these children in low- and middle-income countries, including maternal mental health which can further negatively impact child health and development outcomes. We aimed to assess the prevalence and factors associated with poor maternal mental health in mothers of children born preterm, low birthweight (LBW), and with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) at 24-47 months of age in rural Rwanda.

Cross-sectional study of children 24-47 months born preterm, LBW, or with HIE, and their mothers discharged from the Neonatal Care Unit (NCU) at Kirehe Hospital between May 2015-April 2016 or discharged and enrolled in a NCU follow-up program from May 2016-November 2017. Households were interviewed between October 2018 and June 2019. Mothers reported on their mental health and their child's development; children's anthropometrics were meas poor mental health was also associated with negative parenting practices. Specific interventions targeting mothers of children with disabilities, single mothers, and food insecure households could be additionally beneficial given their strong association with poor maternal mental health.
Half of mothers of children born preterm, LBW and with HIE had poor mental health indicating a need for interventions to identify and address maternal mental health in this population. Mother's poor mental health was also associated with negative parenting practices. selleck products Specific interventions targeting mothers of children with disabilities, single mothers, and food insecure households could be additionally beneficial given their strong association with poor maternal mental health.
Thirty to forty percent of patients with Diffuse Large B-cell Lymphoma (DLBCL) have an adverse clinical evolution. The increased understanding of DLBCL biology has shed light on the clinical evolution of this pathology, leading to the discovery of prognostic factors based on gene expression data, genomic rearrangements and mutational subgroups. Nevertheless, additional efforts are needed in order to enable survival predictions at the patient level. In this study weinvestigated new machine learning-based models of survival using transcriptomic and clinical data.

Gene expression profiling (GEP)of in 2 different publicly available retrospective DLBCLcohorts were analyzed. Cox regression and unsupervised clustering were performed in order to identify probes associated with overall survival on the largest cohort. Random forests were created to model survival using combinations of GEP data, COO classification and clinical information. Cross-validation was used to compare model results in the training set, and Hrform other important prognostic variables such as disease stage and COO. Head-to-head comparisons with other risk stratification models are needed to compare its usefulness.
Our results indicate that DLBCL survival models based on the application of machine learning algorithms to gene expression and clinical data can largely outperform other important prognostic variables such as disease stage and COO. Head-to-head comparisons with other risk stratification models are needed to compare its usefulness.
