This may be related to the different biological substrates underlying these tests. The decreased FST immobility was not due to alterations in general activity.

Taken together these results suggest that 11β-HSD1 may play an important role in depression-related behaviours and further studies are necessary to fully characterise its role in such behaviour.

However, our understanding of how humans produce complex technologies is limited. We used a computer-based experiment, involving humans and learning bots, to investigate how reasoning abilities, social learning mechanisms and population structure affect the production of virtual artefacts. We found that humans' reasoning abilities play an important role in the production of innovations, but that groups of individuals are able to produce artefacts that are more complex than any isolated individual can produce during the same amount of time. We show that this group-level ability to produce complex innovations is maximized when social information is easy to acquire and when individuals are organized into large and partially connected populations. These results suggest that the transition to behavioural modernity could have been triggered by a change in ancestral between-group interaction patterns.Emotions are considered to modulate action readiness. Previous studies have demonstrated increased force production following exposure to emotionally arousing visual stimuli; however the neural mechanisms underlying how precise force output is controlled within varying emotional contexts remain poorly understood. To identify the neural correlates of emotion-modulated motor behaviour, twenty-two participants produced a submaximal isometric precision-grip contraction while viewing pleasant, unpleasant, neutral or blank images (without visual feedback of force output). Force magnitude was continuously recorded together with change in brain activity using functional magnetic resonance imaging. Viewing unpleasant images resulted in reduced force decay during force maintenance as compared with pleasant, neutral and blank images. Subjective valence and arousal ratings significantly predicted force production during maintenance. Neuroimaging revealed that negative valence and its interaction with force output correlated with increased activity in right inferior frontal gyrus (rIFG), while arousal was associated with amygdala and periaqueductal gray (PAG) activation. Force maintenance alone was correlated with cerebellar activity. These data demonstrate a valence-driven modulation of force output, mediated by a cortico-subcortical network involving rIFG and PAG. This study measures the effect of spending policies for long-term care services on the risk of becoming a long-stay nursing home resident after a hip fracture. Relative spending on community-based services may reduce the risk of long-term nursing home residence. Policies favoring alternative sources of care may provide opportunities for older adults to remain community-bound.

This study aims to understand how long-term care policies affect outcomes by investigating the effect of state-level spending for home- and community-based services (HCBSs) on the likelihood of an individual's nursing home placement following hip fracture.

This study uses data from the 5% sample of Medicare beneficiaries from 2005 to 2010 to identify incident hip fractures among dual-eligibility, community-dwelling adults aged at least 65 years. A multilevel generalized estimating equation (GEE) model estimated the association between an individual's risk of nursing home residence within 1 year and the percent of states' Medicaid long-term support service (LTSS) budget allocated to HCBS. Other covariates included expenditures for Title III services and individual demographic and health status characteristics.

States vary considerably in HCBS spending, ranging from 17.7 to 83.8% of the Medicaid LTSS budget in 2009. Hip fractures were observed from claims among 7778 beneficiaries; 34% were admitted to a nursing home and 25% died within 1 year. HCBS spending was associated with a decreased risk of nursing home residence by 0.17 percentage points (p 0.056).

Hajdu-Cheney syndrome (HCS) is a very rare connective tissue disease characterized by osteoporosis, early dentition loss and a particular phenotype as a result of enhanced NOTCH2 signaling. The pathogenesis of bone resorption and osteoporosis is not fully understood. The altered angiogenesis may play a role in acroosteolysis. We performed capillaroscopy in order to assess the microvascular involvement in a 21-year-old female patient with sporadic HCS. The patient presented with severe parodontopathy, acroosteolysis, and clubbing of four fingers and three toes. Hand radiographs showed periarticular osteoporosis and asymmetric bony involvement with acral resorption and/or transversal lucency bands in several fingers. Early collagen-vascular diseases were ruled out by clinical and ancillary examinations, including immunology and immunoblot for systemic sclerosis. Nailfold capillaroscopy showed reduction of capillary height and density in all affected fingers. Notably, in the fingers with acral resorption, many capillaries were dilated, while in the ones with radiolucency band, capillary dilation was a rare finding. In clinically unaffected fingers, the capillaroscopic findings were normal.To our knowledge, this is the first report of capillaroscopic findings in HCS. The nailfold capillaroscopic aspect reflects the involvement of acral vessels in HCS; thus, capillaroscopy may represent an early diagnostic tool as well as a means of therapeutical assessment. Repeated capillaroscopy in HCS may also add to the understanding of its pathogenesis.

All English-language observational studies, retrospective reviews, and clinical trials were included. Case reports and case series describing the use of dexmedetomidine in 10 or fewer patients were excluded.
