French Door Refrigerator With Ice Maker Review

Combining form and functionality, French-door refrigerators have stylish double doors that open up to an expansive fridge on top and freezer drawer below. Special features like through-the-door dispensers, high-end ice machines and adjustable flex drawers make them stand out from the rest.

We contacted Ladina Schopf - an interior designer, architect and founder of LS Projects - for her tips on how to select the best one. They considered the storage capacity, layout, and energy efficiency, among other features.

GE Profile Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

Like the name suggests, GE's Profile series is geared towards those who want to incorporate cutting-edge technologies into their kitchen. This fridge is loaded with them all, from a Keurig K cup coffee maker inside the door, to a clever dispenser of water. But these flourishes don't mask mediocre performance, especially in the refrigerator's freezer and an ineffective temperature-controlled drawer. This fridge is expensive and I was expecting better.

This fridge is a great option, despite the slight blip. It has a huge freezer compartment, which is unusual for counter-depth French door fridges. It also holds a lot of frozen food items compared to other models.

Inside the fridge, there are 17 shelves and compartments. The fridge compartment is 18.5 cubic feet, which is typical for a fridge with a French door at this price. It also has a decent-sized icemaker in the left-hand door, although it's not the largest I've seen.

You can alter the shelving in both compartments to create a customized storage arrangement for whatever you have to keep. The interior design of the GE PYE22PYNFS is also attractive. The LED lighting is a nice feature. The bins for storage inside come with a third shelf that can be folded down to store tall objects. The drawers come with temperature controls, so you can set them to Beverage, Meat or Deli settings. The drawers are easy to shut and open, but I found the textured plastic coatings to be a bit rough on my fingers.

The GE PGE29BYTFS Smart Refrigerator comes with all the features you'd expect from a refrigerator in this price range. It has Wi-Fi, app support and GE's SmartHQ Software. The app, available for iOS and Android devices can let you control your fridge from anywhere in the world, and has a ton of customization options. It also alerts you when doors are left open, when the refrigerator or freezer needs to be defrosted and when it's time to change the filter.

It would be nice if the GE PYE22PYNFS included Precise fill, an option available in a few other GE refrigerators that allows you to set the number of cups of water you'd like to dispense at once. The fridge displays a countdown timer to reveal how much water is left however it's not as useful as Precise fill.

Bosch Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The Bosch French-door Refrigerator is a striking piece. It's designed to appear like it's a seamless part in your kitchen. The fridge uses fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, which is a great feature for busy households. It also has a vegetable compartment that keeps fruits and vegetables fresher for longer, and two compressors to preserve food items. The ice maker is one of the top we've tested and produces a pyramid-shaped ice with a low water usage. This fridge is perfect for a single household or a kitchenette that wants a built-in appearance and top-of-the best food preservation.


The fridge was rated the best refrigerator in our Refrigerators test for various reasons. Its freezer temperatures remained constant at just above 0°F and never fluctuated more than a tiny fraction - this is essential to avoid the risk of a freezer burn. The refrigerator section of the refrigerator also did well. It reached the initial temperature within a matter of hours, and maintained that temperature throughout our testing.

Bosch has a reputation for premium appliances and appliances, so it's not a surprise that this counter-depth refrigerator is also a smart appliance, with the option of connecting to your home Wi-Fi network and Bosch's Home Connect platform. This app allows you to monitor and control your fridge from your smartphone or tablet. The refrigerator is pricey and has great features and functionality at a reasonable price.

While the fridge is a fantastic appliance however, it is important to understand the limitations. You may need to get creative with tall items because the fridge has a small shelf space. The shelves aren't impervious to spills and could easily be stained or damaged by sharp items. The trays can be easily removed from the fridge. However, they must be cleaned frequently to stop the growth of mold.

LG Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

The LG LRFLC2706S is an excellent counter-depth refrigerator that packs a lot of storage into the frame's compact size. It has a sleek, fingerprint-resistant stainless-steel finish and features thick handles that make them comfortable to grip. The fridge features a standard French door design, with two rows of shelves that can be used to capture spills and a set crisper drawers. The top shelf on the right can be folded down to make space for taller items. There's also a full-width drawer for deli items and an internal water dispenser.

The refrigerator comes with an ice maker, making it easy to move the frozen ice whenever you need it. The freezer features thoughtful design elements, for instance, sliding drawers that help better organize the placement of items. It has a large bin for storing frozen food and a separate one for ice.

Smart InstaView panel is a cool feature of the refrigerator. It lets you control the temperature of your fridge and lighting via your smartphone. It's a nice way to monitor and manage your refrigerator, especially if you're away from home.

The Smart InstaView feature is neat however it doesn't enhance the performance of the fridge. The fridge took a bit longer to defrost food and chill it than the other fridges we tested. This could be due to the larger capacity.

Another issue with the door of this refrigerator. french door fridge freezer with a sunken design allow smaller people to open them from the bottom. However, taller people still struggle to close them without slamming them. It would have been much better to have front-mounted handles.

The LG Counter-Depth MAX is a ideal choice for those who want to combine the advantages of a French-door fridge's aesthetics with an efficient layout. Its capacity is higher than average for counter-depth models and is able to cool evenly. It's also a bit less than the best counter-depth refrigerator with an ice maker, which helps make it an attractive option.

Frigidaire Counter Depth French Door Refrigerator

If you're looking for an French door fridge that doesn't cost you a fortune, this Frigidaire is a good choice. It's a simple fridge that might not be as eye-catching like some of its competitors however it has enough features to make it a an excellent choice. Its most important feature is the temperature adjustable drawer that helps keep food items like veggies and meat fresher for longer. It also comes with a huge water and ice maker dispenser.

The "Chill Drawer", which is situated over the two crisper bins, is another great feature. This drawer allows you to redirect the majority of the refrigerator's cooling power into the area so that you can store foods that require extra attention. You can alter the feature using the slider located on the in the middle of the drawer. french door fridge freezer can also adjust the general cooling settings for the entire fridge. I have found that the generic settings work better than the specific ones.

During my tests, the refrigerator's temperatures stayed fairly consistent across different areas of the fridge. Temperatures at the top and bottom of the fridge didn't vary very far from 38 degrees, and the middle of the fridge was within a degree of 36. This is a solid performance, but it doesn't quite make it to the top of our rankings.

This fridge has a few other neat features, including a temperature-monitoring display that alerts you to fluctuations and provides a forecast for the day ahead. You can also pair this fridge with a smart thermometer to get more precise readings of your fridge's temperature.

The exterior of the Frigidaire is made of grey-bodied stainless that has a "smudge proof" finish. It blocks streaks and fingerprints better than other stainless steel finishes I've tested.
