This study aims to evaluate tail lesion occurrence in slaughtered pigs and explore the relationship between carcass condemnations and tail lesion considering different production systems and tail lengths and to evaluate the importance of creating a detailed tail score classification that includes scarred lesions. Data on a total of 9189 pigs from 73 batches with different tail lengths (undocked; docked mid-length; fully docked) and from distinct production systems (conventional; conventional antibiotic-free and organic) were collected at a Spanish abattoir. Batches with higher tail lesion scores presented a significantly higher chance of total condemnation and total condemnation due to pyaemia, being even more associated with scarring score. The within-batches probability for local condemnations and local condemnation due to abscesses increased significantly with higher scarring scores. Regarding tail length, docked at mid-length and undocked carcasses presented significantly higher odds to be condemned due to abscess. Organic farms showed a higher probability of total condemnations. This research highlights the importance of tail lesions on carcass condemnations that may also be influenced by docking and type of production. Results suggest that scarring score should be included in the tail surveillance program.Enteric methane (CH4) emissions produced by microbial fermentation in the rumen resulting in the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) into the atmosphere. The GHG emissions reduction from the livestock industry can be attained by increasing production efficiency and improving feed efficiency, by lowering the emission intensity of production, or by combining the two. In this work, information was compiled from peer-reviewed studies to analyze CH4 emissions calculated per unit of milk production, energy-corrected milk (ECM), average daily gain (ADG), dry matter intake (DMI), and gross energy intake (GEI), and related emissions to rumen fermentation profiles (volatile fatty acids [VFA], hydrogen [H2]) and microflora activities in the rumen of beef and dairy cattle. For dairy cattle, there was a positive correlation (p < 0.001) between CH4 emissions and DMI (R2 = 0.44), milk production (R2 = 0.37; p < 0.001), ECM (R2 = 0.46), GEI (R2 = 0.50), and acetate/propionate (A/P) ratio (R2 = 0.45). For beef cattle, CH4 emissions were positively correlated (p < 0.05-0.001) with DMI (R2 = 0.37) and GEI (R2 = 0.74). Additionally, the ADG (R2 = 0.19; p < 0.01) and A/P ratio (R2 = 0.15; p < 0.05) were significantly associated with CH4 emission in beef steers. This information may lead to cost-effective methods to reduce enteric CH4 production from cattle. We conclude that enteric CH4 emissions per unit of ECM, GEI, and ADG, as well as rumen fermentation profiles, show great potential for estimating enteric CH4 emissions.The surveillance of behavioral interactions between individuals in bird populations is important to understand social dynamics and explain distribution patterns caused by competition for food and space. For waterbirds, little is known about interactions between individuals at high-tide roosts. In the present study, we used surveying with unmanned aircraft systems (UASs) to provide enhanced information on previously hidden aspects of the highly dynamic communities of roosting waterbirds in the non-breeding season. Fine-scale density estimations, derived from aerial photos obtained with UASs, were used as a measure to explain intra- and inter-species interactions for 10 selected waterbird species on a major roost site in the Danish Wadden Sea. Uniquely defined density distributions were detected, which, to some degree, were dependent on species and species size, with smaller waders exhibiting densely packed flocks (e.g., dunlin Calidris alpina and golden plover Pluvialis apricaria), whereas larger species, such as ducks and geese (Anatidae) exhibited lower densities. Multi-species flocks were observed to occur frequently (31.9%) and generally resulted in lower densities than single-species flocks for each of the species involved. Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that UAS aerial photos can be used both to assess positions for roosting waterbirds and to classify habitats (i.e., mudflats, vegetated areas, waterline, and flooded areas) during high-tide. This facilitated the collection of precise data for temporal habitat choices for individual species when using the studied roost site. Our study highlights UAS surveys as an effective tool to gather hitherto unobtainable data for individual occurrences of roosting waterbirds on a spatiotemporal scale.Oxidative stress is a detrimental physiological state that threatens birds' productivity and general health. Colocynth is an herbal plant known for its bioactive properties, and it is mainly known for its antioxidant effects. This study's purpose was to investigate how effective colocynth seed is at lowering the detrimental impact of acute oxidative stress caused by paraquat (PQ) injection in laying hens. A total of 360 Hy-Line Brown chickens, aged 39 weeks, were gathered and divided into four equal groups (10 hens × 9 replicates) in a 2 × 2 factorial design. The experimental groups were given either a basal diet or the basal diet supplemented with colocynth seed (1% of diet). Starting from week 40 of age and for 7 successive days, the experimental groups were either injected daily with paraquat (5 mg/kg body weight) or with saline (0.5 mL, 0.9% NaCl). Egg production performance with selected stress biomarkers and immunological response parameters were investigated at the end of week 40 of age. Our data revea total white blood cell count by 25% and improved the B-lymphocyte proliferation index (a 1.3-fold increase) compared with the PQ-injected group that did not receive supplementation. Moreover, the non-stressed colocynth-supplemented group had significantly higher cell-mediated and humoral immune responses than the non-stressed control group. This study demonstrated that colocynth seed supplementation in birds exposed to acute oxidative stress may effectively alleviate its negative impacts on production performance, immunological responses, and redox status. We also inferred that, under normal conditions, colocynth seed can be added to laying hens' diets to stimulate production and ameliorate immune responses.Current guidelines recommend transitioning cats from one litter product to another over 6 days to minimize stress. The study objective was therefore to test these guidelines using 16 adult domestic cats (2 cohorts of 8) by observing behavioural changes associated with elimination throughout the litter transition. Cats were transitioned from a clay-based litter (CLAY) to a plant-based litter product (PLANT) over 6 days (period 1) via an incremental replacement of CLAY with PLANT. All cats then remained on PLANT for 8 days (period 2). This same transition process was executed for both cohorts, and litter box behaviours were observed via remote recording. Urination, defecation, cover, and dig behaviours were not different between periods 1 and 2 (p > 0.05). Sniffing frequency was greater in period 2 than period 1 (p < 0.05); however, during the litter transition (period 1), cats sniffed the litter boxes being transitioned from CLAY to PLANT more often and for longer than they did for the boxes consisting of only PLANT (p < 0.05). These data suggest that 6 days may be an adequate amount of time to transition a cat to a new litter, although successful transition may also be specific to the types of litters investigated.Castration is usually used to remove boar taint in commercial pork production, but the adipose accumulation was increased excessively, which affected the meat quality of pigs. Based on our previous study, secreted phosphoprotein 1 (SPP1) was significantly differentially expressed between castrated and intact male pigs. However, the role of SPP1 in regulating adipose growth and fat storage caused by castration is unknown. In this study, SPP1 was identified to inhibit adipogenesis by the expression of adipogenic markers PPARγ and FABP4 as well as Oil red staining assay during differentiation of porcine bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (pBMSCs). Subsequently, testosterone was used to treat pBMSCs to simulate the androgen status of intact pigs. Compared with the control groups without testosterone, the SPP1 expression in the testosterone group was markedly increased in the late stage of pBMSCs differentiation. Furthermore, novel-miR-659 was predicted by TargetScan and miRDB to target SPP1 and verified through a dual-luciferase reporter assay. Oil Red O staining assay indicated that novel-miR-659 overexpression significantly promoted adipogenesis, whereas novel-miR-659 inhibition suppressed adipogenesis. The expressions of adipogenic markers PPARγ and FABP4 showed the same tendency. Taken together, our study found that the targeted interaction between novel-miR-659 and SPP1 is involved in regulation of fat deposition in castrated male pigs.The ocular microbiome in horses is poorly described compared to other species, and most of the information available in the literature is based on traditional techniques, which has limited the depth of the knowledge on the subject. The objective of this study was to characterize and predict the metabolic pathways of the ocular microbiome of a group of healthy horses. Conjunctival swabs were obtained from both eyes of 14 horses, and DNA extraction was performed from the swabs, followed by next generation sequencing and bioinformatics analyses employing DADA2 and PICRUSt2. A total of 17 phyla were identified, of which Pseudomonadota (Proteobacteria) was the most abundant (59.88%), followed by Actinomycetota (Actinobacteria) (22.44%) and Bacteroidota (Bacteroidetes) (16.39%), totaling an average of 98.72% of the communities. Similarly, of the 278 genera identified, Massilia, Pedobacter, Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, Suttonella and Verticia were present in more than 5% of the samples analyzed. Both Actinobacteria and Bacteroides showed great heterogeneity within the samples. The most abundant inferred metabolic functions were related to vital functions for bacteria such as aerobic respiration, amino acid, and lipid biosynthesis.
