How to Repair Double Glazed Windows
There are a few indicators that indicate your double-glazed windows need to be fixed. Draughts and water ingress are obvious indicators of damage to frames of your windows. They must be fixed as quickly as possible.
However, misting could be a sign that your window seals require replacing. Replacing your window seals will solve the problem, and prevent leaks, draughts or condensation.
Broken Panes
Broken glass is among the most common problems that double-glazed windows confront. Double-pane windows are harder to break than single panes, however accidents can happen. You should repair damaged glass as quickly as possible.
Remove any loose glass fragments that could remain in the frame. Don't forget to wear a pair of gloves and eye protection while doing this, as glass can be extremely sharp. After the shards have been removed, look around the floor of your home for extra pieces of glass that may be left. It is also an excellent idea to search for any metal hooks that may be holding the panes together and take them out as well.
After the glass has been removed then you can begin the process of removing the old compound and glazing points (small fasteners that pin the glass into the window frame) and replacing them with new ones. This is a time-consuming process and you will need a few tools to get the job done. This includes latex glazing putty; metal glazing points; pliers; heat gun and a putty knife.
It is best to start at the top and work your way down when removing the old points and glazing compound. This will help you avoid getting any of the sash's paint or wood stuck to the tool. If you have to remove a portion of the wood from the sash use the utility knife or chipper instead of chemical strippers which could cause damage.
Finally, when you're finished make sure you scrub any wood that's not finished to smooth it. Once the wood is smooth then you can seal it using clear wood sealer or linseed. This will help protect it from water and further damage.
There are some quick solutions to repair cracked double pane windows. However, these methods will not repair the damage and should be used as a temporary solution. The use of a silicone caulk may help seal the gap, but it is important to ensure that you use a high-quality caulk that is applied using the proper techniques.
Condensation
If you notice a haze of moisture or mist between your double glazing glass panes it is a sign that your window seal has failed. This could be a significant issue since it prevents insulating gas or air from being trapped between two panes.
Fortunately, this can be easily fixed by a double glazing expert. Your window repair professional will take off both the window sash as well as the IGU (insulating unit) to fix the problem. Then the gasket will be blown in to create an airtight seal, preventing condensation from occurring in the future. They will also apply a drying agent to help the area dry out and stop the condensation from happening again.
There may be a the glass panes are a little cloudy in a double-glazed windows in the event that the frame has changed over time. This will break the seal. This could be a problem as it means that your windows won't function properly and will lose energy efficiency.
While it is possible to replace panes of a double-glazed Windows however, it can be extremely expensive and is normally only needed in the event of serious issues with a window that are beyond repair. If you are experiencing issues with your double-glazed window but are still in the warranty period, you may be able to get it repaired at no cost or at lower cost.
It is worth checking the conditions of your warranty prior to you call the company to find out whether they can resolve the problem without replacing the entire window. Double glazed windows are generally covered by guarantees of between 10 to 20 years, which means you may find that they can repair the faulty window units rather than replacing them completely. If repairing double glazing is the case, they'll likely send a specialist to repair your double-glazed windows and will usually be capable of doing it quickly. This is a cheaper alternative than purchasing and installing brand new double-glazed windows and is also better for the environment too!
Broken Locks & Handles
If your window handle is broken or difficult to open, it could be a major problem as it makes it impossible to use your windows. This can also give burglars the opportunity to break into your house. There are several options to fix it, but the best way is to speak with an uPVC expert. They can repair the problem for you, or give you a replacement handle.
There are many types of window lock, but the most common one is the Maco or Mila locks that are found on most uPVC frames. These locks employ bayonet rods for locking and can easily seize up. If this occurs, the handle's nose will be stuck in the out position and won't be able to return to the locked wedge. This could be a frustrating issue, but it is able to be resolved with a few simple steps.
To resolve the issue, you'll have to remove the handle. This can be done easily enough using a screwdriver. After the handle is removed, you'll be in a position to see the screws holding the lock to the frame. After the screws have been removed, you can make use of pliers or a wrench to try and grab the shoot bolts. If this is unsuccessful then you might need to insert the tool into the gap between the frame and window (the gap may be different at each end of the window) and then make an "u" shape using your hands to try to grab the shoot bolts.
If you manage to remove the bolts for shooting, you can close your window by moving the handle into the closed position. The gearbox (espag, espagnolette, etc.) is most likely damaged, so it will not open when you pull the handle. It is possible to repair the gearbox without the shoot bolts which means that the window can be opened with the handle (and will still be secure), but you will need to order an entirely new handle and gearbox.
Broken Hinges
If your uPVC window hinges are no working properly, you may need to repair or replace them. If this is because of them having been opened with too much force the hinge dropping and snapping or they were defective to begin with the issue could cause issues that make using your window difficult. It's simple to replace the hinge, so you don't need to buy new windows.
Take off the hinges. To do this, loosen the screws that hold the frame to the hinges. Once you've removed the hinges you can replace them with plywood boards cut to the proper size. The plywood should be thicker than the hinges that came with it to help support the weight of the window when it is opened and closed. You'll also need to use wood filler to ensure that the hole that was left by the hinge is filled to the brim and will not leak or loosen in the future.
Once you've replaced the hinges and filled in the holes, you'll need to paint them. Make sure to use a high-quality paint to ensure it will last as long as is possible. Once the paint is dry, you can attach the window again. Make sure you tighten any loose screws.
Window hinges also require regular maintenance. You can help them last longer by regularly cleaning the track of friction and lubricating the hinge mechanism. You can also apply a wood preservative to shield them from the elements, helping to keep them from rust and maintain their appearance for as long as you can.
Double-glazed windows are more energy efficient than single-glazed windows and can save you money on heating. Like any other part of your home windows will eventually need to be replaced or repaired.
