Determine phacoemulsification cataract surgery risk in a Covid-19 era.
SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) transmission via microdroplet and aerosol-generating procedures presents risk to medical professionals. As the most common elective surgical procedure performed globally; determining contamination risk from phacoemulsification cataract surgery may guide personal protection equipment use.
Pilot study involving phacoemulsification cataract surgery on enucleated porcine eyes by experienced ophthalmologists in an ophthalmic operating theatre.
Two ophthalmic surgical teams.
Standardized phacoemulsification of porcine eyes by two ophthalmologists accompanied by an assistant. Fluorescein incorporated into phacoemulsification irrigation fluid identifying microdroplets and spatter. Contamination documented using a single-lens reflex camera with a 532 nm narrow bandpass (fluorescein) filter, in-conjunction with a wide-field blue light and flat horizontal laser beam (wavelength 532 nm). Quantitative image analysis usin-CoV-2 transmission via microdroplets or aerosolisation of ocular fluid are reported, this pilot study only supports standard personal protective equipment.
In 2015, Sysmex launched a new series of hematology analyzers (XN-L Series) designed to fulfill the needs of niche laboratories in areas such as pediatrics, dialysis, neurology, and oncology while providing a compact solution. In this study, we evaluate the whole blood and body fluid modes of one of these analyzers, the XN-350.
A total of 300 residual EDTA samples were measured on the XN-350 in whole blood mode and the XN-1000 to evaluate method comparison, flagging sensitivity, repeatability, reproducibility, linearity, carryover, and stability. In addition, 191 samples were obtained and processed in body fluid mode which included, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), ascites, synovial, and pleural fluid to perform method comparison, repeatability, reproducibility, linearity, limit of quantitation, and carryover studies.
Strong agreement was shown between the XN-350 and XN-1000 for both whole blood and body fluid modes in results and flagging. Linearity results in both modes on the XN-350 showed a high R
value (>.99). For WBC, RBC, HGB, and PLT, the carryover results were well within the predetermined criteria of ≤0.5% for whole blood and ≤0.3% for CSF. Repeatability and reproducibility were acceptable for both modes, and there were no significant deviations present in stability for whole blood. #link# In addition, there was high agreement in all body fluid types evaluated.
The performance of the XN-350 is comparable to the XN-1000 in both whole blood and body fluid modes, making it a reliable alternative to larger analyzers for smaller, niche laboratories.

This review is dedicated to X-linked dystonia-parkinsonism (XDP). We screened 233 citations and curated phenotypic and genotypic data for 414 cases. To reduce data missingness, we (1) contacted authors and engaged the research community to provide additional clinical and genetic information, and (2) revisited previously unpublished data from a cohort of XDP patients seen at our institution. Using these approaches, we expanded the cohort to 577 cases and increased information available for important clinical and genetic features such as age at onset, initial manifestation, predominant motor symptoms, functional impairments, and repeat size information. We established the use of mining unpublished data to expand the MDSGene workflow and present an up-to-date description of the phenomenology of XDP using an extensive collection of previously reported and unreported data. © 2020 The Authors. The aim of the study is to describe our management of these skin manifestations and to evaluate a possible correlation to SARS-CoV-2 infection. All patients underwent clinical and laboratory tests to detect a possible underlying connective disease and also to specific SARS-CoV-2 investigations such as oropharyngeal swab and IgG-IgM serology. Nine patients aged between 5 and 15 years old were evaluated. Skin lesions observed were purplish, erythematous and oedematous, in some cases painful and itchy. Six out of nine had respiratory and systemic symptoms (cough, nasal congestion, chills, fever, and asthenia) that preceded cutaneous findings of approximately 2 weeks. Concerning blood exams, three out of nine had D-dimer weakly increased, four had ANA positivity two with a title 1160, one with 1320, and one with 15120 and a speckled pattern. link2 The latter patient had also ENA SS-A positive and RF positivity, confirmed at a second check, so as to allow us to make a diagnosis of connective tissue disease. Four out of nine had aPL positivity (IgM). Reactants acute phase were all negative. Oropharyngeal swabs and serology tests for SARS-CoV-2 was negative (borderline in one patient for IgM). No treatment was needed. Even if we do not have enough data to prove it, we hypothesize a correlation between pernio-like lesions and SARS-CoV-2 infection for an increased number of these lesions described during the pandemic and also because such manifestations appeared when temperatures were mild and patients were at home in isolation for the lockdown. Many questions remain open about interaction host-virus.Skin structure and function results from a dynamic interplay between dermal and epidermal cell types. Optimizing skin health through an effective and long-lasting skin care regime therefore requires a global approach, encompassing various mechanisms to stimulate this interplay beyond the action scope of a classical topical solution. This study evaluates the impact of a novel home-use device combining a topical serum, light-emitting diodes and massage on the clinical signs of extrinsic skin aging. The innovative principle relies on potentiating the effect of active ingredients contained in the topical serum with visible and near infra-red photons to prevent extracellular matrix degradation and promote its reconstruction. After in vitro and ex vivo investigations, a clinical study assessed the safety and efficacy of a daily treatment with the home-use device for 28 days. A significant increases in skin density and radiance while reducing the wrinkles was obtained with no side effects.Extracting relevant information from a very large excess of irrelevant debris. Vascularized periosteal graft have demonstrated a tremendous bone healing capacity in children. The objective is to report outcomes on the use of vascularized tibial periosteal graft (VTPG) during bone reconstruction in a series of children with complex bone healing problems.
Cases were collected retrospectively since May 2013 to May 2019, excluding cases of congenital pseudarthrosis of the tibia. Mean age at surgery was 12.8 (range 11-18) years. Indications included treatment of recalcitrant bone nonunion and the prevention of bone allograft-host junction nonunion in seven and three patients, respectively. The periosteal flap, based on the anterior tibial vessels, was harvested as a free flap in six instances and as a pedicled flap in four.
Mean follow-up was 25.2 months (range 8-36). The flap showed a 13.6 cm (range 9-16) and mean width 3.4 cm (range 2.7-3.9). Early bone union was achieved, initially through periosteal callus, followed by cortical union at mean times of 2 and 4 months, respectively, in nine cases. The flap was not successful in a patient with severe comorbidities. No donor site complications were registered.
VTPG was fast and high effective for the treatment complex bone nonunion or the prevention of allograft nonunion in children.

Robot-assisted pedicle screw insertion has gained popularity in the spinal surgery field. Due to high cost, these spinal robots are not extensively applied in clinical surgeries. link3 Developing an effective robot system with low cost and high clinical acceptability is one of the future trends.
We developed a novel fluoroscopy-based robot system for pedicle screw insertion. Four live pigs were conducted with percutaneous pedicle screw insertion. Robot-assisted surgery was performed on the left side of pedicle, while the right opposite side is placed by freehand. The respect accuracy, surgical time and fluoroscopy time were recorded.
Robot-assisted group achieved 100% (23/23) accuracy. The average times (6.4 ± 1.7) for intraoperative fluoroscopy usage per procedure were lesser than freehand group (12.5 ± 3.6), and the surgical time (6.8 ± 2.1 min) per screw was reduced compared with freehand group (12.1 ± 4.8 min).
check details is cost-effective and feasible for pedicle screw placement. Low economic cost makes it easier for extensive application in primary hospitals.

The genetic changes in chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) have been well established, although challenges persist in cases with rare fusion transcripts or complex variant translocations. Here, we present a CML patient with e14a3 BCR-ABL1 transcript and t(9;22;12) variant Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome.
Cytogenetic analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) was performed to identify the chromosomal aberrations and gene fusions. Rare fusion transcript was verified by a reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Breakpoints were characterized and validated using Oxford Nanopore Technologies (ONT) (Oxford, UK) and Sanger sequencing, respectively.
The karyotype showed the translocation t(9;22;12)(q34;q11.2;q24) [20] and FISH indicated 40% positive BCR-ABL1 fusion signals. The RT-PCR suggested e14a3 type fusion transcript. The ONT sequencing analysis identified specific positions of translocation breakpoints chr2223633040-chr9133729579, chr12121567595-chr2224701405, which were confirmed using Sanger sequencing.
