The fragility of silk fibroin film is a drawback to being used as a barrier membrane. Semi-resorbable barrier membranes maintain function longer than a resorbable membrane and no need to be removed. The study aimed to fabricate semi-resorbable membranes using silk fibroin with glycerol plasticizer (Group A), immobilized with fish collagen (Group B), and then characterized, in vitro biocompatibility tested, and compared with a commercial collagen membrane (Group C). Group B showed more roughness (0.2155 µm) than Group A (0.1424 µm). Group A was more hydrophilic (76.75° ± 3.07°) and more stiffness (28.93% ± 15.56%) than Group B (112.67° ± 1.94°, 42.10% ± 11.46%) and C (54.79% ± 13.44%) without significant difference. Group C had a significantly higher (p less then 0.05) swelling degree and less degradation rate than others. Group A showed significantly highest (p less then 0.05) cell proliferation. Group C showed more alkaline phosphatase activity than others but no significant difference in osteocalcin and Alizarin Red activity on day 21. The semi-resorbable membrane based on silk fibroin-glycerol possessed good physical and mechanical properties, and well-supported osteoblastic cell proliferation and differentiation.
Endovascular aneurysm sealing (EVAS) is a sac-filling device with a blunted systemic inflammatory response compared to conventional endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR), with a suggested impact on all-cause mortality. This study compares mortality after both EVAS and EVAR.
This is a retrospective observational study including data from 2 centres, with ethical approval. Elective procedures on asymptomatic infrarenal aneurysms performed between January 2011 until April 2018 were enrolled. Laboratory values (serum creatinine, haemoglobin, white blood cell count, platelet count) were measured pre- and postoperatively and at 1 and 2 years, respectively. Mortality and cause of death were recorded during follow-up.
A total of 564 patients were included (225 EVAS, 369 EVAR), after propensity score matching there were 207 patients in both groups. Baseline characteristics were similar, except for larger neck angulation and more pulmonary disease in the EVAR group. The median follow-up time was 49 (EVAS) and 44 (EVAS and EVAR with a tendency toward higher inflammatory response in the EVAR patients through the first 2 years.
Clinical trials have demonstrated sustained benefits of drug-coated balloon (DCB) angioplasty compared with noncoated balloon angioplasty in symptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD) presenting with femoropopliteal (FP) artery disease. However, there is still controversy whether particulate embolization caused by crystalline paclitaxel, the so-called "downstream effect," is adversely associated with clinical outcomes after use of FP DCB among chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) patients. The current RADISH (Roles of Angioplasty with Drug-coated balloon for chronic ISchemia in wound Healing) study investigated wound healing following DCB therapy vs non-DCB therapy for real-world CLTI patients presenting with FP lesions.
This multicenter, retrospective study analyzed 927 patients with CLTI (mean age, 76±10 years; male, 57.8%; diabetes mellitus, 64.5%; dialysis, 50.7%) presenting with FP lesions and treated endovascularly via DCB (138 patients) vs non-DCB therapy (789 patients) between April 2014 and FP lesions. From this results, DCB therapy would be a reasonable treatment option for CLTI patients.
The current analysis of data from the RADISH study demonstrated that DCB therapy did not lead to delayed wound healing and reduced restenosis rate in CLTI patients presenting FP lesions. From this results, DCB therapy would be a reasonable treatment option for CLTI patients.
The treatment of suprahepatic inferior vena cava (IVC) ruptures results in high mortality rates due to difficulty in performing the surgical procedure. Here, we present a case of successful endovascular management of a life-threatening suprahepatic IVC rupture with top-down placement of a stent graft.
A 33-year-old woman was involved in a traffic accident and presented to our emergency department due to unstable hemodynamics after blunt abdominal wall trauma. Computed tomography (CT) revealed massive extravasation of contrast agent from the suprahepatic IVC, which suggested traumatic suprahepatic IVC rupture. To seal the IVC, to salvage major hepatic veins, and to prevent migration of the stent graft into the right side of the heart after placement, an aortic cuff with a proximal hook was introduced in a top-down direction via the right internal jugular vein. After closure of the injured IVC, the patient's hemodynamics improved, and additional laparotomy was performed. After 3 months of trauma care, the patient recovered and was discharged. Follow-up CT after 58 months showed a patent stent graft within the IVC.
Endovascular management with top-down placement of a stent graft is a viable option for emergent damage control in patients with life-threatening hemorrhage from IVC rupture.

To report endovascular repair of postdissection thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) in 2 patients with vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (vEDS).
. A 56-year-old vEDS male patient with a 50-mm type III TAAA [history of aortic root repair, hemiarch replacement, and thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR) for acute type A aortic dissection (TAAD) 7 years ago] was treated by a 2-stage procedure; first, cervical debranching of the left subclavian artery and second TEVAR and t-branch. The postoperative course was uneventful. Follow-up computed tomography angiography (CTA) 3.5 years postoperatively demonstrated aortic remodeling with patency of targeted visceral vessels and no endoleak.
. A 47-year-old vEDS male patient presented with a TAAA (diameter of 67 mm). The patient had a history of aortic valve and arch replacement with elephant trunk for acute TAAD, and consequently a TEVAR and candy-plug procedure after a ruptured false lumen (FL) aneurysm of the descending thoracic aorta. TAK-715 concentration He also had a surgical repair by an aorto-bi-iliac graft. Two years later, CTA demonstrated aneurysmal FL dilatation distally to the candy-plug and he was treated with fenestrated EVAR (F-EVAR).
Endovascular repair of postdissection TAAA was feasible and safe with good short-term outcome in 2 patients with vEDS.

Our patient presented with persistent hiccoughs that were resistant to treatment with baclofen. Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy with biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of HSV-1 oesophagitis. The hiccough subsided within 48 h of aciclovir therapy.
The health profile of older adults places them at risk of infirmity and death from COVID-19 which may induce anxiety or exacerbate pre-existing anxiety. We examined COVID-19 related anxiety in men undergoing treatment for prostate cancer (CaP).
This study was conducted between July and September 2020. Sixty participants from a larger prospective, longitudinal study assessing depression, anxiety and health related quality of life in men with localized prostate cancer (DAHCaP) were included. COVID-19 related anxiety was measured at a single time point using, the Corona Virus Anxiety Scale (CAS). In addition, the following, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S), the Connor-Davidson Resilience (CD-RISC) scale and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) that form part of the DAHCaP study were used in the analysis. We extracted pre-pandemic data for the STAI-S.
Twenty-one percent had diabetes, 62.3% had hypertension and 24.6% had cardiac diseases, all known risk factors for severe COVID-19. Only 3% scored ≥9 on the CAS, indicating COVID 19 anxiety dysfunction. Half knew of family or friends that had contracted COVID-19 especially those scoring higher on the CAS (
= 0.042). There was a significant decrease in STAI-S scores pre-pandemic to the pandemic phase (34.7 to 29.8,
= 0.003). No correlation was observed between CAS and STAI-S (rho = 0.08), CD-RISC (rho = -0.06) or MSPSS (rho = -0.15). There was a weak positive correlation between the CAS and monthly income (rho = 0.33;
= 0.010).
COVID-19 did not induce significant anxiety in men being treated for CaP nor did it place an additional psychological burden, nor was there any correlation with state anxiety, resilience or social support.

Yield loss caused by pod shattering is a main problem during B. napus harvest. In this study, six BnSHP1 and two BnSHP2 homoeologs were targeted by the CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats)-Cas9 (CRISPR-associated protein 9) genome editing system and multiple SHP1 and SHP2 mutated lines were identified for evaluating the contribution for pod-shattering resistance. Our data suggest that BnSHP1A09 is probably a promising homoeolog for controlling lignin contents at dehiscence zone. Simultaneous mutation of BnSHP1A09/C04-B/A04 and BnSHP2A05/C04-A exhibited reduced lignified layer and separation layer adjacent to valves and replum. The pod-shattering resistance index (SRI) subsequently increased to 0.31 in five homoeolog mutation lines compared with the wild type (SRI = 0.036), which provide the theoretical basis for breeding of commercial pod-shattering resistance variety. The discovery of CRISPR has revolutionized the field of genome engineering, but the potential of this technology is far from reaching its limits. In this review, we explore the broad range of applications of CRISPR technology to highlight the rapid expansion of the field beyond gene editing alone. It has been demonstrated that CRISPR technology can control gene expression, spatiotemporally image the genome in vivo, and detect specific nucleic acid sequences for diagnostics. In addition, new technologies are under development to improve CRISPR quality controls for gene editing, thereby improving the reliability of these technologies for therapeutics and beyond. These are just some of the many CRISPR tools that have been developed in recent years, and the toolbox continues to diversify.Since its Nobel Prize-winning breakthrough in 2012, CRISPR-Cas-based gene-editing system has emerged as one of the most promising biotechnologies in decades. In this article, we present an objective and comprehensive evaluation of CRISPR-based gene-editing technologies, including base editing and prime editing, based on the bibliometric analysis of 22,902 published records. We also assessed the status of CRISPR gene-editing technologies in academia from 2010 to 2020 globally, with respect to countries, institutions, and researchers, and used text clustering methods to assess technical trends and research hotspots. Our results indicate, not surprisingly, that this is a thriving and prominent area of research. By comparing the relevance and growth of CRISPR gene-editing technologies in China with other countries by several metrics, we show that the Chinese scientific community attaches considerable importance to the field of plant genome engineering, with more scholars from agricultural sectors than other sectors.
