The same laser structuring method was used throughout, but with varying input fluence. The laser processing parameters resulted in high surface melting. After laser treatment, four post-processing methods were used, namely high vacuum, low temperature annealing, storage in a polyethylene bag, and storage in ambient air. Subsequently, the water droplet contact angle was measured over a long time period of 55 days. The results show that the sample stored in ambient air remained hydrophilic. On the other hand, the sample post-processed in a vacuum chamber behaved hydrophobically with a contact angle of approximately 150°. Other post-processing did not lead to specific wettability behavior. After wettability testing, all samples were cleaned ultrasonically in distilled water. This cleaning process led to annulation of all obtained properties through post-processing. In summary, this paper shows that it is more important to study surface chemistry than topography in terms of effects on wettability. Moreover, surface wettability can be controlled by laser structuring, post-processing, and surface cleaning.The Covid-19 pandemic and the restrictions put in place to prevent or reduce the spread of the disease led to anxiety, concern and stress for many people. We undertook an online survey that ran for six weeks in June/July 2020 and gained a response from 2115 people, of which 25% were male and 74% female, with 35% aged 16-44 and 65% aged 45+. This survey focused on people who were already interested or engaged with nature. We explored whether being physically activity changed or not, if being active impacted people's wellbeing and whether those who were active benefited from connecting to nature. We found that those meeting the government recommended levels of physical activity in the previous week, of 150 min, were more likely to maintain their overall wellbeing through feeling that the things they did in their life were worthwhile (p less then 0.0001) and reported an increase in feelings of connection to nature (p less then 0.0001). While those who did less than 30 min of physical activity in the previous week were less happy (p less then 0.0001) and more anxious than usual (p less then 0.0001). The research highlights the importance of physical activity and contact with nature and how these can play important roles in maintaining people's everyday wellbeing under extremely difficult national circumstances.(1) Background Increased thromboembolic events and an increased need for continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) have been frequently reported in COVID-19 patients. Our aim was to investigate CRRT filter lifespan in intensive care unit (ICU) COVID-19 patients. (2) Methods We compared CRRT adjusted circuit lifespan in COVID-19 patients admitted for SARS-CoV-2 infection to a control group of patients admitted for septic shock of pulmonary origin other than COVID-19. Both groups underwent at least one session of CRRT for AKI. (3) Results Twenty-six patients (13 in each group) were included. We analysed 117 CRRT circuits (80 in the COVID-19 group and 37 in the control group). The adjusted filter lifespan was shorter in the COVID-19 group (17 vs. 39 h, p less then 0.001). This trend persisted after adjustment for confounding factors (-14 h, p = 0.037). Before CRRT circuit clotting, the COVID-19 group had a more procoagulant profile despite higher heparin infusion rates. Furthermore, we reported a decreased relation between activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) and cumulative heparin dose in COVID-19 patients when compared to historical data of 23,058 patients, suggesting a heparin resistance. link3 (4) Conclusion COVID-19 patients displayed a shorter CRRT filter lifespan that could be related to a procoagulant profile and heparin resistance.Due to its high activation efficiency, waterglass has been widely used for alkali activations in geopolymer. We developed the SMPD1-ZooM algorithm, which is able to predict with good accuracy whether variants cause Niemann-Pick disease and its phenotypic severity; the predictor is freely available for download. We performed a large-scale analysis of all possible SMPD1 variants, which led us to identify protein regions that are either robust or fragile with respect to amino acid variations, and show the importance of aromatic-involving interactions in SMPD1 function and stability. We aimed to establish a sensitive high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) assay for the quantification of itaconate, mesaconate, citraconate, the pro-drug 4-octyl-itaconate, and selected TCA intermediates. The assay was validated for itaconate, mesaconate, and citraconate for intra- and interday precision and accuracy, extended stability, recovery, freeze/thaw cycles, and carry-over. The lower limit of quantification was 0.098 µM for itaconate and mesaconate and 0.049 µM for citraconate in 50 µL samples. In spike-in experiments, itaconate remained stable in human plasma and whole blood for 24 and 8 h, respectively, whereas spiked-in citraconate and mesaconate concentrations changed during incubation.
