The results of the study showed that Arabidopsis seeds exposed to sound waves (100 and 100 + 9k Hz) for 15 h per day for 3 day had significantly longer root growth than that in the control group. The root length and cell number in the root apical meristem were significantly affected by sound waves. Furthermore, genes involved in cell division were upregulated in seedlings exposed to sound waves. Root development was affected by the concentration and activity of some phytohormones, including cytokinin and auxin. Analysis of the expression levels of genes regulating cytokinin and auxin biosynthesis and signaling showed that cytokinin and ethylene signaling genes were downregulated, while auxin signaling and biosynthesis genes were upregulated in Arabidopsis exposed to sound waves. Additionally, the cytokinin and auxin concentrations of the roots of Arabidopsis plants increased and decreased, respectively, after exposure to sound waves. Our findings suggest that sound waves are potential agricultural tools for improving crop growth performance.Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) leaves (SLs) are used as vegetables and traditional medicines in Asian and African countries. We investigated in vitro antioxidant and anti-colon cancer efficacy of ethanol extract of SL (SLE) and its major bioactive component. SLE contained appreciable amount of major classes of antioxidant phytochemicals, such as total polyphenols, total flavonoids, and carotenoids, and correspondingly exhibited antioxidant activities, such as radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). A cell viability assay showed that SLE time- and dose-dependently attenuated the growth of human colon cancer cells, HT29 and HCT116. Flow cytometry analysis showed that SLE increased sub-G1 (in HT29 and HCT116) and G2/M (in HCT116) cell populations, suggesting that the growth inhibition by SLE was due to induction of apoptosis and G2/M cell cycle arrest. Trans-well and wound-healing assays showed that SLE alleviated invasion and migration of HT29 and HCT116 cells in non-cytotoxic conditions. High-performance liquid chromatography analysis revealed that pedaliin (6-hydroxylueolin 7-methyl ether 6-glucoside; pedalitin-6-O-glucoside) was a major constituent of SLE. Moreover, FRAP, growth-inhibitory, anti-invasive, and anti-migratory activities of pedaliin were found. These results demonstrated that SLE possesses in vitro antioxidant and anti-colon cancer activities and that pedaliin is a major component contributing to such activities.The application of herbicides to arable land is still the most effective and accepted method to protect plants from weeds. Extensive use of chemicals in conventional agricultural practices has resulted in continuous and serious environmental pollution. Flurochloridone (FLC) is a monophenyl pyrrolidinone selective herbicide that is commonly used to inhibit weeds that occur during the growth of potatoes. In recent years, research on the toxicity of FLC has gradually increased. However, it is relatively rare to analyze the role of FLC by studying the composition of soil microorganisms. Therefore, we used NGS methods to identify the fungal community structure of the low content soil (LS) and high content soil (HS) samples in this study. Subsequently, we identified the fungal community and composition differences of these two group samples using the statistical analysis. Despite the variances of fungal community and composition across the different samples within the group, the fungal composition of the LS samples and the HS samples. LS samples were predominated by Ascomycota, while the HS samples were predominated by Mortierellomycota and Basidiomycota. The major species in the LS samples were Plectosphaerellacucumerina and Trichocladiumasperum, whereas the dominant species in the HS samples were Epicoccum nigrum and Cladosporium chasmanthicola. These results suggested that the LS samples and the HS samples had different rhizosphere soil fungal community and composition changes resulting from implementation of FLC in potato growing areas.Noncontact monitoring of human vital signs has been an emerging research topic in recent years. A key approach to this monitoring is the use of the Doppler radar concept which enables real-time vital signs detection, resulting in a new class of radar system known as bio-radar. The antennas are a key component of any bio-radar module and their designs should meet the common requirements of bio-radar applications such as high radiation directivity and mechanical flexibility. This paper presents the design of a four-element antenna array on a flexible liquid crystal polymer (LCP) substrate of 100 μm thickness and εr of 3.35. The designed antenna array can be used with a 24 GHz bio-radar for vital signs monitoring in a non-contact manner. It features a relatively compact size of 36.5 × 53 mm2 and measured gain of 5.81 dBi. The two vital signs breathing rate (BR) and heart rate (HR) of two human subjects are detected with relatively good accuracy using the fabricated antenna array and radio frequency (RF) output power of -3 dBm from a distance of approximately 60 cm. The effect of bending on the antenna performance is also analyzed.As part of our studies on antiprotozoal activity of approved herbal medicinal products, we previously found that a commercial tincture from Salvia officinalis L. (common Sage, Lamiaceae) possesses high activity against Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense (Tbr), causative agent of East African Human Trypanosomiasis. We have now investigated in detail the antitrypanosomal constituents of this preparation. A variety of fractions were tested for antitrypanosomal activity and analyzed by UHPLC/+ESI QqTOF MS. The resulting data were used to generate a partial least squares (PLS) regression model that highlighted eight particular constituents that were likely to account for the major part of the bioactivity. These compounds were then purified and identified and their activity against the pathogen tested. All identified compounds (one flavonoid and eight diterpenes) displayed significant activity against Tbr, in some cases higher than that of the total tincture. From the overall results, it can be concluded that the antitrypanosomal activity of S. officinalis L. is, for the major part, caused by abietane-type diterpenes of the rosmanol/rosmaquinone group.Bovine bone substitute materials (BSMs) are used for oral bone regeneration. The objective was to analyze the influence of BSM biofunctionalization via hyaluronic acid (HA) on human osteoblasts (HOBs). BSMs with ± HA were incubated with HOBs including HOBs alone as a negative control. On days 3, 7 and 10, cell viability, migration and proliferation were analyzed by fluorescence staining, scratch wound assay and MTT assay. On days 3, 7 and 10, an increased cell viability was demonstrated for BSM+ compared with BSM- and the control (each p ≤ 0.05). The cell migration was enhanced for BSM+ compared with BSM- and the control after day 3 and day 7 (each p ≤ 0.05). At day 10, an accelerated wound closure was found for the control compared with BSM+/- (each p less then 0.05). The highest proliferation rate was observed for BSM+ on day 3 (p ≤ 0.05) followed by BSM- and the control (each p ≤ 0.05). At day 7, a non-significantly increased proliferation was shown for BSM+ while the control was higher than BSM- (each p less then 0.05). The least proliferation activity was observed for BSM- (p less then 0.05) at day 10. HA biofunctionalization of the BSMs caused an increased HOB activity and might represent a promising alternative to BSM- in oral bone regeneration.Low-noise asphalt mixtures are characterized by increased air void content. Their more open structure contributes to faster degradation within the operating temperature range. For this reason, binder modification is used in their production. The correct selection of modifiers allows one to significantly improve the technical properties of the mixtures. The article presents the results of tests of six types of mixtures stone mastic asphalt (SMA8), porous asphalt (PA8), stone mastic asphalt reducing tire/road noise (SMA8 LA) and stone mastic asphalt reducing tire/road noise, with 10%, 20% and 30% content of rubber granulate (RG). Bitumen 50/70 modified with copolymer styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) and crumb rubber (CR) was used for the production of the mixtures. In order to determine the differences in the technical properties of the mixtures, the following parameters were tested stiffness modules by indirect tensile testing of cylindrical specimens (IT-CY) in a wide range of positive temperatures, and resistance to permanent deformation using the British and Belgian methods with the use of double wheel tracker (DWT). The test results and their analysis confirmed that there was a significant improvement in the IT-CY stiffness modules of SBS and CR modified mixtures. Replacing more than 20% of coarse aggregate with RG causes a significant decrease in the stiffness of the mixture (by 90% in relation to the reference mixture SMA8 LA). The SMA mixtures obtained lower values of rutting resistance parameters (WTS and PRD) in water (Belgian method) compared to the results obtained in the air tests (British method). We revealed 106 putative CRP transcripts belonging to different families of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs), signaling peptides (RALFs), and peptides with non-defense functions (Major pollen allergen of Olea europaea (Ole e 1 and 6), Maternally Expressed Gene (MEG), Epidermal Patterning Factor (EPF)), as well as pathogenesis-related proteins of families 1 and 4 (PR-1 and 4). We discovered a novel type of 10-Cys-containing hevein-like AMPs named SlHev1, which was up-regulated both by infection and elicitors. Transcript profiling showed that F. oxysporum infection and F. sambucinum elicitors changed the expression levels of different overlapping sets of CRP genes, suggesting the diversification of functions in CRP families. We showed that non-specific lipid transfer proteins (nsLTPs) and snakins mostly contribute to the response of tomato plants to the infection and the elicitors. The involvement of CRPs with non-defense function in stress reactions was also demonstrated. The results obtained shed light on the mode of action of F. sambucinum elicitors and the role of CRP families in the immune response in tomato.
