High rates of delay discounting are associated with a range of disorders characterized by behavioral disinhibition, such as substance abuse and childhood behavioral problems. The current study extends the research of the personality correlates of delay discounting by examining its association with two domains of disinhibited personality, impulsivity and low harm avoidance. Trait measures of impulsivity and harm avoidance as well as a delay discounting task were administered to 669 young adult subjects (350 male, 319 female). The primary hypothesis was that a combination of high impulsivity and low harm avoidance would be associated with the highest delay discounting rates. Delay discounting rates were significantly associated with high levels of impulsivity. Counterintuitively, the highest rates of delay discounting were associated with high rates of impulsivity and high rates of harm avoidance. Results suggest that those high in impulsivity and harm avoidance are more sensitive to immediate rewards. These results are novel and suggest more complex processes involved when considering a choice between an immediate and a delayed reward that may require longer waiting periods, which itself may be anxiety providing and perceived as potentially harmful.Separate lines of epidemiological research suggest that individuals with high trait self-regulation (e.g. conscientious individuals) and individuals with higher cognitive ability (e.g. executive control/intelligence) each tend to enjoy superior health and well-being outcomes. However, it remains largely unexplored whether these personological and cognitive contributions to physical health are shared, independent, or interdependent. In the current study, we examined associations between trait self-regulation, cognitive control, self-reported physical health, and subjective well-being. A domain-general model revealed little shared variance between trait self-regulation and cognitive control but revealed significant unique relationships between each predictor and physical health. Results of a latent moderation analysis suggested that cognitive control moderated the contribution of self-regulation to health but not subjective well-being. This moderation effect was characterized by a strengthened relationship between trait self-regulation and health with decreases in cognitive control. Together, our results suggest that self-regulation and cognitive control may independently contribute to health outcomes in young adults and that self-regulation may be increasingly important for individuals lower in cognitive control.

The extent to which these and other recent factors have affected historical racial/ethnic differences in the foster care system is unknown. We explored the prevalence of racial/ethnic disproportionality and disparity in PDU entries and described children characteristics across racial/ethnic populations.

Relative to mothers of children with ADHD, far less is known about fathers and what predicts their attendance in treatment. The current study aimed to explore predictors of father (N = 171) attendance using data from four studies that tested the efficacy of behavioral parent training programs aimed specifically at fathers. A hierarchical regression was performed to test four potential predictors of attendance, including father race/ethnicity, father education level, child medication status, and father ratings of the child's oppositional defiant disorder symptoms. Father education level was determined to be a significant predictor of attendance, whereas father race/ethnicity, child medication status, and father ratings of the child's ODD behavior were not. The results suggest that future parent training interventions may need to be adapted to improve attendance from fathers of lower education levels.Research, practice, and policy focus on the importance of relationships with young people aging out of foster care, especially relational permanency. While previous research has examined these relationships, typically with mentors, foster parents, or biological parents, few have examined the quality of strong network ties within support networks. This study incorporated a network approach to understanding how youth discussed strong ties and defined closeness in relationships. Qualities of strong ties included stability, multidimensional support, advocacy, honesty and genuineness, commonalities, trust, and small interconnected core networks. Understanding qualities youth value in close relationships may help service providers in supporting and enhancing relational permanency from multiple sources of support for youth aging out of the foster care system.Emerging adults (EA), individuals between the ages of 15-26, face many challenges in their transition to a new developmental stage, especially those with behavioral health concerns who do not receive the supports they need. #link# Many EA drop out of services at 18, which is likely due in part to the need to transition to the adult service system and the lack of available transition support services in child/adolescent service systems. Though this is a clear disparity, research on EA service utilization, especially those enrolled in Medicaid and with co-occurring conditions, is rare. This paper begins to address this gap by examining variables at age 17 that predict the service utilization of continuously Medicaid enrolled EA at age 18. Data came from an administrative dataset. The sample had 4,548 EA and 53% were female, 50% identified with a minority group, and 19% were child-welfare involved. Exploratory logistic regression analyses were used. Minority EA had lower odds of utilizing services at age 18. EA involved with child welfare had greater odds of utilizing services at age 18. EA with at least one Substance Use Disorder (SUD) and at least one mental health disorder at 17 had a higher likelihood of service utilization at 18, the opposite was true for EA with only SUDs. These findings identified predictors of service utilization for an understudied sample-EA enrolled in Medicaid. Results provided preliminary evidence that EA with SUD diagnoses access behavioral health services differently than those without a SUD diagnosis, and that it is fruitful to examine subgroups of EA when seeking to understand their service utilization patterns. Identifying predictors of service utilization during the transition period from the child to the adult system can help inform systems interventions to retain EA in services.Marking colon tumors for surgery is normally done with the use of India ink. Using a positively charged amine linker, ICG was non-covalently adsorbed onto the nanoparticle surface. For ultra-thin wall 100 nm diameter silica shells, a bimodal ICG layer of less then 3 nm is was formed. Conversely, for thicker walls on 2 μm diameter silica shells, the ICG layer was only bound to the outer surface and was 6 nm thick. In vitro testing of fluorescent emission showed the particles with the thinner coating were considerably more efficient, which is consistent with self-quenching reducing emission shown in the thicker ICG coatings. Ex-vivo testing showed that ICG bound to the 100 nm hollow silica shells was visible even under 1.5 cm of tissue. In vivo experiments showed that there was no diffusion of the ICG/nanoparticle marker in tissue and it remained imageable for as long as 12 days.Epidemic forecasting has a dubious track-record, and its failures became more prominent with COVID-19.
