To examine the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and sarcopenia in older adults who visited a frailty clinic in Japan.

This cross-sectional study used outpatient data from the Frailty Registry Study. Vevorisertib mouse The DII is an index of diet-induced inflammation, and a dietary assessment was performed using a brief self-administered diet history questionnaire to calculate the DII score. We classified DII scores by quartiles (Q1-Q4), and sarcopenia was diagnosed according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia 2019 consensus. Logistic regression analyses for sarcopenia were performed. Age, sex, comorbidities, and physical activity were entered as confounding factors (Model 1) and Models 2, 3, and 4 with BMI, protein intake, and energy intake added to Model 1.

We included 304 patients in the analysis (mean age, 77.6 ± 6.3years; female, 67.4%). The prevalence of sarcopenia was 14.5%. Logistic regression analyses showed that DII scores were significantly associated with sarcopenia in Model 1 and 2 (Model 1, reference Q1, Q4 OR 3.10, P = 0.020; Model 2, Q4 OR 3.40, P = 0,022) but not in Model 3 and 4.

It induced resistance in Nicotiana tabacum cv. Xanthi-nc and Cyamopsis tetragonoloba, against Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and Sunn-hemp rosette virus (SRV), respectively. Foliar treatment with isolate PM1 curbed TMV accumulation in susceptible N. tabacum cv. White Burley. PM1 was more effective as a foliar than a root/soil drench treatment, evident through a comparative decrease in ELISA values, and reduced viral RNA accumulation. Foliar and soil drench treatment with PM1 resulted in a disease index of 48 and 86 per cent, and a control rate of 48.9 and 8.5 per cent, respectively. PM1 exhibited phosphate solubilization, produced siderophores, auxins, HCN, and ammonia, all important plant growth-promoting traits. Foliar treatment with PM1 enhanced growth in tobacco, while its volatiles significantly promoted seedling growth in C. tetragonoloba. Of the several metabolites produced by the isolate, many are known contributors to induction of systemic resistance, antibiosis, and growth promotion in plants. Soluble metabolites of PM1 were less effective in inducing antiviral resistance in N. tabacum cv. Xanthi-nc in comparison with its broth culture. PM1 and its metabolites were antagonistic to Gram-positive Bacillus spizizenii and Staphylococcus aureus, and fungi Fusarium oxysporum, Aspergillus niger, and Rhizopus stolonifer. Its volatiles were inhibitory to F. oxysporum and R. stolonifer. This article presents results from a meta-analysis of such studies completed between 2015 and 2019 and provided to us by HHS. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they used an experimental/quasi-experimental design, included a comparison condition, assigned at least 10 study participants to each condition, and measured and reported at least one outcome related to sexual behavior or consequences. Data were extracted using a standardized coding protocol and outcomes were coded as, or transformed to, log odds ratio effect sizes for analysis and then transformed to odds ratio effect sizes for presentation in the text. All outcomes were coded such that log odds ratios greater than zero (odds ratios greater than 1) indicate beneficial effects (e.g., reductions in risky sexual behavior). We evaluated the benefits and limitations of using text-based outreach to re-engage with LTFU PrEP patients and offer re-initiation of PrEP care. Using text-messaging, we surveyed San Francisco City Clinic patients who started PrEP from January 2015 to October 2019 and were LTFU by October 1, 2020. Our goals were to better understand (1) whether our patients remained on PrEP through another provider or source, (2) why patients choose to discontinue PrEP, and (3) whether text-based outreach could successfully re-engage such patients in care. Multiple-choice survey questions were analyzed quantitatively to determine the proportion of respondents selecting each option; free-text responses were analyzed qualitatively using an inductive approach to identify any additional recurring themeengaging LTFU patients in PrEP care, suggesting that text-messaging may not be the optimal strategy for this purpose.Health equity research has identified fundamental social causes of health, many of which disproportionately affect Black Americans, such as early life socioeconomic conditions, neighborhood disadvantage, and racial discrimination. However, the role of life course factors in premature mortality among Black Americans has not been tested extensively in prospective samples into later adulthood. To better understand how social factors at various life stages impact mortality, this study examines the effect of life course poverty, neighborhood disadvantage, and discrimination on mortality and factors that may buffer their effect (i.e., education, social integration) among the Woodlawn cohort (N = 1242), a community cohort of urban Black Americans followed since 1966. Taking a life course perspective, we analyze mortality data for deaths through age 58 years old, as well as data collected at ages 6, 16, 32, and 42. At age 58, 204 (16.4%) of the original cohort have died, with ages of death ranging from 9 to 58.98 (mean = 42.9). Cox proportional hazard models adjusting for confounders show statistically significant differences in mortality risk based on timing and persistence of poverty; those who were never poor or poor only in early life had lower mortality risk at ages 43-58 than those who were persistently poor from childhood to adulthood. Education beyond high school and high social integration were shown to reduce the risk of mortality more for those who did not experience poverty early in their life course. Findings have implications for the timing and content of mortality prevention efforts that span the full life course.Osteoporosis does not only affect postmenopausal women, but also ageing men. The burden of disease is projected to increase with higher life expectancy both in females and males. Importantly, osteoporotic men remain more often undiagnosed and untreated compared to women. Sex steroid deficiency is associated with bone loss and increased fracture risk, and circulating sex steroid levels have been shown to be associated both with bone mineral density and fracture risk in elderly men. However, in contrast to postmenopausal osteoporosis, the contribution of relatively small decrease of circulating sex steroid concentrations in the ageing male to the development of osteoporosis and related fractures, is probably only minor. In this review we provide several clinical and preclinical arguments in favor of a 'bone threshold' for occurrence of hypogonadal osteoporosis, corresponding to a grade of sex steroid deficiency that in general will not occur in many elderly men. Testosterone replacement therapy has been shown to increase bone mineral density in men, however data in osteoporotic ageing males are scarce, and evidence on fracture risk reduction is lacking. We conclude that testosterone replacement therapy should not be used as a sole bone-specific treatment in osteoporotic elderly men.Hospital-acquired acute kidney injury is a heterogeneous clinical syndrome that has multiple aetiologies, widely differing pathogeneses, variable clinical manifestations, and diverse outcomes. There is a persistent unmet need for novel biomarkers that offer timely diagnosis and accurate prediction of the short- and long-term sequelae of acute kidney injury (AKI). AKI is associated with systemic and intrarenal inflammation. The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), a readily available marker of inflammation and physiologic stress, has gained increasing attention as universal marker in AKI patients. Numerous retrospective cross-sectional studies assessed the clinical usefulness of this test in high-risk patients with a known time point of the renal injury (surgery, radiological procedures). Strong associations have been demonstrated between high NLR and early onset, progression or recovery of AKI, and the in-hospital and post-discharge mortality of these patients. However, the results were contradictory. The huge heterogeneity of reporting concerning the timing and numbers of blood samples, calculation of the optimal cut-off and the demographic and clinical features of the patient cohorts were confounders.
