3 Wheeler Buggies
A three-wheeler is ideal for rough terrain, offering a smooth ride for your child. They are also simpler to push and maneuver than a four wheel buggy, particularly those with fabric slings or seat units that are tightly positioned in the frame to provide the best design and weight distribution.
Stability
Three-wheeled vehicles are very stable, and this makes them a great choice for off-road walking (especially when equipped with a seat that is all-terrain or off-road). They often feature oversized front wheels that can deal well with bumps and kerbs as well as rough terrain. Some models have a lockable wheel on the front for extra stability when driving on uneven terrain.
It's important to remember that 3-wheel buggies have lower center of gravity than their 4-wheeled counterparts and, therefore, are more likely to fall over. That said, the best 3-wheel buggies have the an ideal geometry and design to ensure that they remain stable in all conditions. They must be able to pivot on a dime, be easy to steer with just one hand and have the front wheel rotate 360o that makes them great for maneuvering and navigating difficult terrain.
Look for models that have pneumatic tyres. These are made to handle nonpaved tracks, and should be able to take on mud, gravel, rocks and more. Many all-terrain buggies have an adjustable front wheel that can be locked to increase stability when dealing with extremely rough terrain too.
A 3-wheeled pram is a great choice for those who run and like to walk fast uphill. This is especially true if you plan to connect to a car seat or carrycot. The Roma Atlas is a great example, with a world-facing seat that can recline flat and has improved 5-point harness and storage space for all your equipment (plus an extendable 50+ sun hood). It's light, compact, and suitable for use from birth. It can be used with the car seat or carrycot. It can also be used for light jogging but it's not designed for serious runners.
Weight
If you are looking for a buggy to tackle difficult terrain, then you should pick one with big tires. They are designed to tackle grass, cobbles and dirt tracks with ease while providing smooth riding. They are also great for jogging as they're equipped with suspension and are easy to get up and down kerbs. However, they're a bit heavy to push.
The best 3-wheel buggy for rough terrain is the Mountain Buggy Urban Glide 2 (pictured above). The 3-wheel buggy comes with 16 rear wheels and a lockable swivel front wheel, so it's very manoeuvrable. It comes with air tyres which require pumping occasionally, and it can carry a child up to the age of 3. MFM reviewer Kath said that her toddler enjoyed the design of the seat, and she found it easy to steer with her 3-year-old on board.
The Baby Jogger Versa GT is another great option. It comes with a movable handlebar, a high-quality hood that offers 50+ UV protection, and an extremely high-quality hood. It's also easy to get up and down kerbs and fit into small car boot. It can be used as a stroller along with a carrycot for newborns or toddlers.
Fabric sling seats sit snugly within the frame of the buggie rather than over it like modular seats. This design delivers an lower centre of gravity at the perfect height, instantly making it easier to push and lighter to pop the kerb (you should never underestimate the amount of times you'll have to do this when you're a new parent!)
Seating
There are many options for seating in 3 wheelers. For a newborn it is possible to use the carrycot plus (which MFM reviewer Alice says is a cozy and comfortable lie-flat bed that can be used both on and off the buggy) and older infants and toddlers can be seated in the world-facing or parent facing seat unit that is roomy and cushioned and has adjustable ventilation. It's important to note that these seats do not recline completely, but they can be lowered to the lowest position which should still give your child plenty of headroom and space to move around.
A sling made of fabric is also available. It's a benefit that it is located within the frame, instead of being placed on top of it as a modular seat. This creates a lower center of gravity and a perfect weight distribution. This makes it easier and lighter to push especially when you're on bumpy terrain or curbs. MFM reviewer Kath loved the way this type of seat dealt with these challenges.
This kind of buggy comes with an enormous basket, along with other useful features, such as an hood that can be extended with 50+ UV protection, an easy to use brake pedal and some innovative visibility lights that can be placed in front of occupants to ensure safety when riding on rough terrain.
If you're seeking a buggy that can grow with your family, the sport(tm), a world-first, can accommodate the newborn, and later be modified to fit two or three children as they grow. All within one footprint.
Stores
The 3-wheeled frame makes a buggy more stable and stable to push with one hand and also perfect for handling terrain that is difficult to navigate. However, it also means that the shopping basket doesn't hold the same amount as a 4-wheeled buggy.
A good quality ATP will have a top suspension, pneumatic tyres as well as a padded handle for your convenience. It will be able to accommodate a carrycot or a car seat, so you can use it from the time of birth.
MFM's reviewers have found that the 3-wheeler frame doesn't fit through all the doors in their homes or small car booties - make sure you know the dimensions of the buggy when it's folded before buying for those who are concerned about space.
Find a 3-wheeler that has 2 (or 3!) seats. seats once your family grows. These are the most efficient of both and can help you to save money in the future. The iCandy Strawberry Sport is one of the most popular. It can be used from the day of birth as a single buggy, and then converted into twin buggies once your baby starts to walk.
Tyres
These tyres cushion bumps and uneven surfaces to make your child's ride more comfortable. You'll find these on pushchairs, such as the Phil & Ted's Sport which MFM reviewer Kath discovered to provide "an amazing ride for my toddler". She also said that the grippy tyres on the Phil & Ted's Sport made it simple for her to negotiate the kerbs and other obstacles.
They can be difficult to maintain and will need to be replenished regularly. These tyres are more prone to punctures, and you should always carry a repair kit as well as an spare inner tube when you're out and about.
PU tyres can be found on a lot more pushchairs than air-filled tyres, yet they are still just as sturdy. 3 wheeler pushchair are easily identified by their matte finish and soft feel. They also slide easily on even and tied surfaces.
You can usually identify the difference between PU and air-filled tire by running your fingers over each one. If it feels firm, then it's made of rubber, if it slides then it's a PU. You can also confirm that your buggy has PU tyres by sliding the tyres over a clean, flat surface - they'll be able to roll easily and fit snugly in their wheel hubs.
Foam tyres are commonly used in high-performance buggies and joggers because they can cope with the rough terrain that's associated with this type of pushchair. This could make your buggy less stable since the foam will lose its springy feel. These tyres are also noisy because they generate lots of noise when you turn and navigate around the town.
