We demonstrate a challenge-based innovation of End of Life Tyres (ELTs) pyrolysis for magnetic pyrochar production and synthesis with evidence of its use as low cost, novel adsorbent for pharmaceuticals removal from aqueous solutions. Magnetic tyre pyrochar (MTC) derived from ELTs at Technology Readiness Level 3-7 (TRL3-7), was tested for the removal of ciprofloxacin (CIP), propranolol (PRO) and clomipramine (CLO), from water, at varied pH and ionic strengths. The morphological and chemical properties of the adsorbents were assessed using Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) surface area, Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscope coupled with Energy Dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDS), elemental analysis and zeta potential measurements. MTC showed excellent adsorption efficiency of 85%, 90% and 92% for CIP, PRO and CLO respectively, higher than that of the non-magnetic tyre pyrochar (TC), due to the larger surface area, and porosity and lower polarity. Adsorption of the compounds onto MTC was highly pH dependent, and favourable at low ionic strength. The experimental data were well described by pseudo-second order kinetic and Freundlich isotherm models. Based on FTIR and zeta potential analysis, the interaction mechanisms were explained by cation-π, π-π EDA, cation exchange, electrostatic repulsion and hydrophobic effect. In the context of the circular economy, this ELTs based low cost magnetic adsorbent (estimated at $299/t) can be potentially used at full-scale industrial wastewater treatment for elimination of drugs from aqueous solutions, offering sustainable environmental remediation.Migratory birds are potential transmitters of bacterial antibiotic resistance. However, their role in the environmental dissemination of bacterial antibiotic resistance and the extent of their impact on the environment are not yet clear. Qinghai Lake is one of the most important breeding and stopover ground for the migratory birds along the Central Asian Flyway. Here, we investigated the bacterial antibiotic resistance in the environment and among the migratory birds around the lake. The results of culture-based analysis of bacterial antibiotic resistance, quantitative PCR and metagenomic sequencing indicate that migratory birds are one major source of bacterial antibiotic resistance in the environment around Qinghai Lake. Network analysis reveals the co-occurrence patterns of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and bacterial genera. Genetic co-localization analysis suggests high co-selection potential (with incidence of 35.8%) among different ARGs, but limited linkage (with incidence of only 3.7%) between ARGs and biocide/metal resistance genes (BMRGs). The high genetic linkage between ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) is still largely confined to the bacterial community in migratory birds (accounting for 96.0% of sequencing reads of MGE-linked ARGs), which indicates limited horizontal transfer of ARGs to the environment. Nevertheless, the antibiotic resistance determinants carried by migratory birds and their specific genetic properties (high co-selection and mobility potential of the ARGs) remind us that the role of migratory birds in the environmental dissemination of bacterial antibiotic resistance deserves more attention. The geographical and temporal distribution of precipitation has and is continuing to change with changing climate. Shifting precipitation will likely require adaptations to irrigation strategies, and because 35% of rainfed and 60% of irrigated agriculture is within 20 km of a wastewater treatment plant, we expect that the use of treated wastewater (e.g., reclaimed wastewater) for irrigation will increase. Treated wastewater contains various organic and inorganic substances that may have beneficial (e.g., nitrate) or deleterious (e.g., salt) effects on plants, which may cause a change in global food productivity should a large change to treated wastewater irrigation occur. We reviewed literature focused on food crop growth inhibition or promotion resulting from exposure to xenobiotics, engineered nanoparticles, nitrogen, and phosphorus, metals, and salts. Xenobiotics and engineered nanoparticles, in nearly all instances, were detrimental to crop growth, but only at concentrations much greater than would be currently expected in treated wastewater. However, future changes in wastewater flow and use of these compounds and particles may result in phytotoxicity, particularly for xenobiotics, as some are present in wastewater at concentrations within approximately an order of magnitude of concentrations which caused growth inhibition. The availability of nutrients present in treated wastewater provided the greatest overall benefit, but may be surpassed by the detrimental impact of salt in scenarios where either high concentrations of salt are directly deleterious to plant development (rare) or in scenarios where soils are poorly managed, resulting in soil salt accumulation.Arsenic (As) is an ever-present worldwide environmental contamination issue. The process of As sorption for treatment of contaminated waters is regarded as a promising treatment technology approach due to its simplicity and potential for high efficiency. Biochars are carbon-rich porous solids produced by heating of biomasses under low oxygen conditions. Biochars are considered to be environmentally friendly sorbents that can be used to treat various As-containing waters. However, unmodified biochar is generally a poor sorbent for As species due to static repulsion between the As oxyanions and the negatively charged biochar surface. The As sorption capacity of biochars can be substantially improved by treatments using various physical and chemical activation and modification methods. Thus, this review includes 63 research studies using physical and chemical approaches to enhance biochar physicochemical structures and As sorption efficiencies. The effectiveness of each method for altering the characteristics and sorption capacity of biochars is described. This review can help to focus the scope of future As biochar sorption studies and aid researchers in optimization of biochar-based sorbents for As treatment.Effective adaptation to sea-level rise is critical for future flood protection. Nature-based solutions including salt marshes have been proposed to naturally enhance coastal infrastructure. A gently sloping grass-covered dike (i.e. Wide Green Dike) can be strengthened with clay accumulating locally in the salt marsh. This study explores the feasibility of extracting salt-marsh sediment for dike reinforcement as a climate adaptation strategy in several sea-level rise scenarios, using the Wide Green Dike in the Dutch part of the Ems-Dollard estuary as a case study. A 0-D sedimentation model was combined with a wave propagation model, and probabilistic models for wave impact and wave overtopping. This model system was used to determine the area of borrow pits required to supply clay for adequate dikes under different sea-level rise scenarios. For medium to high sea-level rise scenarios (>102 cm by 2100) thickening of the clay layer on the dike is required to compensate for the larger waves resulting from insufficient marsh accretion. The model results indicate that for our case study roughly 9.4 ha of borrow pit is sufficient to supply clay for 1 km of dike reinforcement until 2100. The simulated borrow pits are refilled within 22 simulation years on average, and infilling is projected to accelerate with sea-level rise and pit depth. This study highlights the potential of salt marshes as an asset for adapting flood defences in the future. The severe haze pollution brought about by China's extensive economic growth has attracted widespread attention from the academia and the international community. Based on the streaming data of the air quality index (AQI), PM2.5, and PM10 from 370 cities in China, this paper uses heatmaps to characterize the haze pollution governance of Chinese cities. Then, the meta-frontier efficiency, group frontier efficiency, and inefficiency under meta-frontier of the haze pollution governance of 101 key cities in China are measured using a directional distance function methodology. The sources of inefficiency of haze pollution governance are also analyzed. Although there have been improvements in AQI, PM2.5, and PM10 for most Chinese cities in recent years, the efficiency of haze pollution governance remains relatively low. In particular, the technology gap between the group frontiers and the meta-frontier of haze pollution governance of central China's cities is growing. Also, the inefficiencies of haze pollution governance mainly stem from the inefficient use and management of the resource inputs, rather than the technology gap.Secondary circulation, which induces the typical helical flow motion along a curved channel, is responsible for the complex morphodynamic processes in fluvial streams and estuaries with meandering nature. Classical secondary circulation has been extensively documented through flume experiments and numerical simulations but field observations about this phenomenon are scarce and only limited to few channel cross-sections. In this study, intensive measurements of flow velocities were performed using a vessel-mounted ADCP in order to illustrate the spatial distribution of classical secondary circulation in a meandering macrotidal estuary for both flood and ebb phases. Negligible salinity is noted during field measurements and velocity profiles manifesting logarithmic patterns confirm open channel flow conditions. As the flow enters the bend, primary and secondary velocities are shifted towards the outer bank. A-674563 in vitro At the bend apex, circulation is accelerated with near-surface primary and secondary velocities skewed to the outer bank while bottom currents are skewed to the inner bank. As the flow exits the bend, bottom secondary currents gain dominance over surface currents while the bottom velocity vectors are directed towards the inner bank. Both the primary and secondary currents cause the propagation of the three-dimensional helical flow alongside with the asymmetry in the bend cross-section and the formation of point bar. This study successfully pioneers in demonstrating the three-dimensional structure of classical secondary circulation in actual field conditions through intensive ADCP surveys.Purpose Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) have been investigated for their role as radiosensitisers for radiation therapy. The study aims to increase the efficiency of these NPs by synthesising them with samarium. Methods Samarium-doped TiO2 NPs (Ti(Sm)O2 NPs) were synthesised using a solvothermal method. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were performed for characterising of the Ti(Sm)O2 NPs. The intracellular uptake and cytotoxicity were assessed in vitro using A549 and DU145 cancer cell lines. Furthermore, the effect of dose enhancement and generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in response to 6 MV X-rays was evaluated. Additionally, the image contrast properties were investigated using computed tomography (CT) images. Results The synthesised Ti(Sm)O2 NPs were about 13 nm in diameter as determined by TEM. The XRD pattern of Ti(Sm)O2 NPs was consistent with that of anatase-type TiO2. EDS confirmed the presence of samarium in the nanoparticles.
