Intertidal limpets were sampled in three sites Ushuaia Bay (UB) (inside Ushuaia city), a site with high anthropogenic influence owing to population growth, and fisheries, industrial and port activities; Ensenada Zaratiegui (EZ) and Playa Larga (PL) (west and east of Ushuaia city, respectively), both sites with a certain degree of environmental protection and low anthropogenic influence. MPs were isolated from the whole soft tissue of individuals by oxidative digestions with H2O2 (30%; 110 w/v). MPs occurrence was 100% in organisms from UB and EZ, whereas 90% in PL. Limpets from UB showed 10 ± 6.69 MPs/ind and 2.22 ± 0.78 MPs/g ww, while in PL and EZ there were 2.90 ± 2.02 MPs/ind and 0.96 ± 0.94 MPs/g ww; and 5.60 ± 2.59 MPs/ind and 2.41 ± 1.47 MPs/g ww, respectively. Fibres were the most abundant MPs type, followed by fragments and films. Fibres and films were identified as semi-synthetic cellulose and, although the polymer matrix of fragments was masked by copper phthalocyanine, one of them could be identified as polystyrene. As expected, the highest abundance of MPs was found in UB. However, a lower abundance of particles was detected in PL (downstream of UB) than in EZ (upstream of UB). This could be due to the influence of both the main current of the Beagle Channel and fluvial discharges, reducing the buoyancy of MPs. More studies are needed to understand the contribution of regional and local features to the accumulation of MPs in these environments and their interaction with the biota.Sewage sludge (SS) is an abundantly available feedstock, which is generally considered as potential threat to human health and environment. Its utilization in any process would be of great help for environmental sustainability. Accordingly, this work aimed to prepare and characterize the sewage sludge biochar (SSB) at temperatures, i.e. (500, 450, 400, and 350 °C), and further analyze the available nutrients and contaminants as well as agri application potential. The results indicated that the total nitrogen (TN), electrical conductivity (EC), and total organic carbon (TOC) content in SSBs decreased with increasing pyrolysis temperature. The overall concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in SSBs was substantially lower (1.8-9.7-fold depending on pyrolysis temperature) than in SS. Pyrolysis of SS enriched the heavy metals content in SSBs and the relative enrichment factor (RE) factor varied between 1.1 and 2.1 depending on the pyrolysis temperature. Furthermore, compared to SS, the leaching rate of heavy metals was significantly decreased in SSBs (1.1-100-fold depending on the pyrolysis temperature) and the pyrolysis temperature of 400-450 °C prevented the Ni, Pb, Cr, and Zn leaching in SSB. The total PAH and heavy metals content in biochars were below the control standard for land application. Finally, testing of the growth-promoting effect of biochar extracts on fenugreek plants revealed that SSB prepared at 350 °C significantly stimulated the root and shoot length of 5-days old seedlings. This study provides important data for potential environmental risks of SSB applications.Increasing temperature over recent decades is expected to positively impact tree growth in humid regions. However, high stand density could increase the negative effects of warming-induced drought through inter-tree competition. How neighborhood competition impacts tree growth responding to climate change remains unclear. Here, we utilized the Changbai Mountain region in northeastern Asia as our study area. We quantified individual tree growth using tree-ring samples collected from three dominant tree species growing in three forest stand density levels. We estimated the effects of climate warming and forest stand density on growth processes and tested for a species-specific response to climate. Our results demonstrated that overall 25% of Korean pine, but only ~3% of Mongolian oak and ~ 4% of Manchurian ash experienced growth reduction. Increased forest density can also exacerbate growth reduction. We identified a climate turning point in 1984, where warming rapidly increased, and defined two groups, "enhance group" (EG) and "decline group" (DG), according to the individual tree growth trend after 1984. For the EG, climate warming increased temperature sensitivity, but the temperature sensitivity declined with increasing stand density for the whole study period. For the DG, tree growth sensitivity shifted from temperature to precipitation after 1984, driven by increased competition pressure under climate warming. Our study concludes that growth decline from warming-induced drought might be amplified by high forest stand density, was especially pronounced in conifer trees.Over the last decades global warming has caused an increase in ocean temperature, acidification and oxygen loss which has led to changes in nutrient cycling and primary production affecting marine species at multiple trophic levels. While knowledge about the impacts of climate change in cetacean's species is still scarce, practitioners and policymakers need information about the species at risk to guide the implementation of conservation measures. To assess cetacean's vulnerability to climate change in the biogeographic region of Macaronesia, we adapted the Marine Mammal Climate Vulnerability Assessment (MMCVA) method and applied it to 21 species management units using an expert elicitation approach. Results showed that over half (62%) of the units assessed presented Very High (5 units) or High (8 units) vulnerability scores. Very High vulnerability scores were found in archipelago associated units of short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus) and common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), namely in the Canary Islands and Madeira, as well as Risso's dolphins (Grampus griseus) in the Canary Islands. Overall, certainty scores ranged from Very High to Moderate for 67% of units. Over 50% of units showed a high potential for distribution, abundance and phenology changes as a response to climate change. With this study we target current and future information needs of conservation managers in the region, and guide research and monitoring efforts, while contributing to the improvement and validation of trait-based vulnerability approaches under a changing climate.Extensive use of antibiotics is significantly associated with development of antibiotic-resistant (AR) bacteria. However, their causal relationships have not been adequately investigated, especially in human population and hospitals. link3 Our aims were to understand clinical AR through revealing co-occurrence patterns between antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes (ARB and ARGs), and their association with antibiotic use, and to consider impact of ARB and ARGs on environmental and human health. Antibiotic usage was calculated based on the actual consumption in our target hospital. ARB was identified by culture. In isolates collected from hospital sewage, bacterial-specific DNA sequences and ARGs were determined using metagenomics. Our data revealed that the use of culture-based single-indicator-strain approaches only captured ARB in 16.17% of the infectious samples. On the other hand, 1573 bacterial species and 885 types of ARGs were detected in the sewage. Furthermore, hospital use of antibiotics influenced the se of antibiotics, and to reduce environmental pollution.Coupling electric field, coagulation, and powdered activated carbon (PAC) adsorption in the microfiltration (MF) process was an effective strategy for membrane fouling alleviation and trace organic compounds (TrOCs) elimination. In the electric field, the surface charges of bovine serum albumin (BSA) molecules and kaolin particles distributed along the direction of the electric field and formed electric dipoles, which lowered electrostatic repulsion between BSA-BSA, BSA-kaolin, and kaolin-kaolin, resulting in enhanced particle aggregation and turbidity reduction. Electrophoretic migration also strengthened the interaction between particles and polyaluminum chloride (PACl). Protein removal showed a significant linear correlation with the transmembrane pressure (TMP), and the slope variation of the fitting curves reflected the role of the electric field in the BSA removal and membrane fouling control. Under the synergistic function of electric field, coagulation, and PAC adsorption, the MF system achieved an 80.7% reduction on membrane fouling, an average BSA removal of 76.4%, and TrOCs elimination of 65.3%-81.7%. Electrochemical oxidation was the main contributor to the TrOCs removal when 2.5 V voltage was applied, and could also prolong the service life of PAC.As the number of cancer patients increases, so does the consumption of cytostatic drugs, which are commonly used in chemotherapy. These compounds are already ubiquitous in wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents and natural water streams, revealing the urgent need for efficient technologies for their removal from the aqueous phase. This work presents the elimination of five cytostatics of concern, found in Portuguese WWTP effluents bicalutamide (BICA), capecitabine (CAP), cyclophosphamide (CYC), ifosfamide (IFO) and mycophenolic acid (MPA), using non-catalytic ozonation. Experiments were performed starting from trace-level concentrations (1 μM) for all cytostatics at neutral pH (pH 7.3 ± 0.1) and room temperature (23 ± 1 °C), employing different ozone dosages. Under the studied conditions, CAP and MPA were quickly eliminated by direct ozonation, whereas BICA, CYC and IFO were more slowly degraded, as they undergo a breakdown via hydroxyl radicals generation (HO) exclusively. Increasing the O3 dosage from 1 to 3 mgO3/mgDOC, CAP, MPA and IFO were completely removed, and BICA and CYC were converted more than 90% after 180 min.
