Endothelial dysfunction commonly occurs in obese children, leading to increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. Exercise has protective effects against endothelial dysfunction through regulating some noncoding RNAs. This study aimed to investigate the relationship of long noncoding RNA MALAT1 and microRNA-320a (miR-320a) with the exercise-induced improvement of endothelial dysfunction in obese children.

Sixty obese children were included in this study, and 40 cases received a 12-week exercise training. The morphological and blood indices before and after exercise were recorded and compared, and the endothelial dysfunction was evaluated by examining the levels of VCAM-1, ICAM-1, E-selectin, IL-6 and TNF-α using ELISA kits. The expression of noncoding RNAs was assessed using Real-Time quantitative PCR. Endothelial cells were used to explore the effects of MALAT1 and miR-320a on endothelial function.

The 12-well exercise training decreased the levels of VCAM-1, ICAM-1 and E-selectin, and inhibited MALAT1 is may be related with the alleviating effects of exercise on endothelial function in obese children.Accurate reward predictions include forecasting both what a reward will be and when a reward will occur. We tested how variations in the certainty of reward outcome and certainty in timing of feedback presentation modulate neural indices of reward prediction errors using the reward positivity (RewP) component of the scalp-recorded brain event-related potential (ERP). In a within-subjects design, seventy-three healthy individuals completed two versions of a cued doors task; one cued the probability of a reward outcome while the other cued the probability of a delay before feedback. Replicating previous results, RewP amplitude was larger for uncertain feedback compared to certain feedback. Additionally, RewP amplitude was differentially associated with uncertainty of presence/absence of reward, but not uncertainty of feedback timing. Findings suggest a dissociation in that RewP amplitude is modulated by reward prediction certainty but is less affected by certainty surrounding timing of feedback.
Glioblastoma multiform (GBM) is the most prevalent and invasive brain malignancy in adults. There are ongoing researches to introduce novel and non-invasive potential biomarkers for the early detection of GBM.

Here we compared the expression of EGFR, miR-34a, and miR-19a between tumoral and adjacent non-cancerous tissues (ANCTs) of 50 GBM patients and also compared their expression levels in serum samples of GBM patients with serum samples of 50 control subjects.

The expression level of the EGFR gene was elevated in GBM tissues in comparison to the corresponding ANCTs (P < 0.0001) and also was higher in the serum sample of patients compared with control serum (P < 0.0001). The miR-34a was significantly downregulated in serum samples as well as tissues obtained from GBM patients compared with the corresponding controls (expression ratio = 0.57 and 0.4, P = 0.02 and 0.001 respectively).

Dysregulation of the EGFR gene and miR-34a in serum samples of GBM patients compared with the control subjects promises the emergence of non-invasive biomarkers for early detection of GBM which need confirmative studies with a large sample size.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is primarily a respiratory disease that has become a global pandemic. Close contact plays an important role in infection spread, while fomite may also be a possible transmission route. Research during the COVID-19 pandemic has identified long-range airborne transmission as one of the important transmission routes although lack solid evidence.

We examined video data related to a restaurant associated COVID-19 outbreak in Guangzhou. We observed more than 40,000 surface touches and 13,000 episodes of close contacts in the restaurant during the entire lunch duration. These data allowed us to analyse infection risk via both the fomite and close contact routes.

There is no significant correlation between the infection risk via both fomite and close contact routes among those who were not family members of the index case. We can thus rule out virus transmission via fomite contact and interpersonal close contact routes in the Guangzhou restaurant outbreak. The absence of a fomite route agrees with the COVID-19 literature.

These results provide indirect evidence for the long-range airborne route dominating SARS-CoV-2 transmission in the restaurant. We note that the restaurant was poorly ventilated, allowing for increasing airborne SARS-CoV-2 concentration.

To determine the serotype distribution and antimicrobial resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae associated with mucosal infections in patients of all ages, 2 to 4 years after the transition from a 10-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV10) to PCV13 in the childhood immunization programme.

Background information and antimicrobial susceptibility data regarding all respiratory tract, middle ear, and conjunctival samples positive for growth of S. pneumoniae (n=2,131) were collected during 18 months in 2016-2018. Available corresponding bacterial isolates were serotyped by PCR and/or antisera (n=1,858).

In total, 17% of isolates were covered by PCV13, predominantly represented by serotypes 3 (9%) and 19A (5%). The most common nonvaccine serotypes were 11A (10%), 23B (10%), 15A (6%) and 35F (5%). Isolates exhibiting serotype 15A or 23B were often multidrug-resistant (21%) or penicillin nonsusceptible (38%), respectively.

The overall proportion of serotype 19A was halved compared to a previous observation period when PCV10 was used (years 2011-2013), suggesting herd protection related to PCV13. The proportion of serotype 3 was, however, unchanged. Despite most nonvaccine serotypes causing mucosal infections have a low invasive potential, certain antibiotic resistant serotypes may pose a clinical problem.

Published research promoted on twitter reaches more readers. Tweets with graphics are more engaging than those without. However, data are limited regarding how to optimize multimedia tweets for engagement.

The "Three facts and a Story" trial is a randomized-controlled trial comparing a tweet featuring a graphical abstract to paired tweets featuring the personal motivations behind the research and a summary of the findings. Fifty-four studies published by the Journal of Hepatology were randomized at the time of online publication. The primary endpoint was assessed at 28-days from online publication with a primary outcome of full-text downloads from the website. Secondary outcomes included page views and twitter engagement including impressions, likes, and retweets.

Overall, 31 studies received standard tweets and 23 received story tweets. Five studies were randomized to story tweets but crossed over to standard tweets for lack of author participation. Most papers tweeted were original articles (94% standard, 91% story) and clinical topics (55% standard, 61% story). Story tweets were associated with a significant increase in the number of full text downloads, 51 (34-71) vs. 25 (13-41), p= 0.002. There was also a non-significant increase in the number of page views. Story tweets generated an average of >1,000 more impressions than standard tweets (5,388 vs. 4,280, p= 0.002). Story tweets were associated with a similar number of retweets, and a non-significant increase in the number of likes.

Tweets featuring the authors and their motivations may increase engagement with published research.

In this review, the molecular events that drive this spectacular shape change are discussed and some questions that remain regarding the mechanistic underpinnings are posed. We speculate on the role of the shape changes in promoting sequestration and release of the developing gametocyte, thereby facilitating parasite survival in the host and underpinning transmission to the mosquito vector.Use of oral nutritional supplements (ONS) in undernourished patients has proven clinical benefits, but this can be hampered by low adherence due to poor experience of palatability. Many patients, particularly older patients, experience hyposalivation which can cause taste changes and reduce the enjoyment of foods. The aim of this study was to investigate differences in the temporal consumption experience (comprising sensory perception, in-mouth aroma release and subjective appetite) of a clinically relevant portion of ONS, for groups differing in saliva flow rates (SFR). The SFR (mL/min) of thirty healthy individuals was measured on three occasions. This data was used to categorise individuals into three groups using quartile analysis low flow (LF) (0.3-0.6 mL/min, n = 5), medium flow (MF) (0.7-1.2 mL/min, n = 16) and high flow (HF) (1.3-1.8 mL/min, n = 9). Over the consumption of eight 15 mL sips of ONS, individuals rated their sensory perception and subjective appetite perception using line scales. CCT251545 mouse Additionally, in-mouth aroma release was measured for each sip, using atmospheric pressure chemical ionisation (APCI). Compared with the MF and HF group, the LF group reported a significantly greater increase of mouth-drying over increased sips (p = 0.02). The LF group also experienced significantly higher aftertaste perception (p less then 0.001), and more intense in-mouth aroma release (p = 0.015), compared with the HF group. These findings occurred concurrently with relatively lower hunger sensations in the LF and MF group. Many patients who are prescribed ONS likely experience reduced salivary flow rates. The unique sensory experiences of these individuals should be considered in order to optimise palatability and nutritional intake.African American women, in particular, have learned to navigate through a food consumption landscape that purposefully, and often aggressively, limits their choices and stigmatizes their resulting physical appearance, and renders them collectively unattractive and unworthy. While American women are challenged to subscribe to traditional slim body standards, a faction of Americans have differing opinions. African American (AA) women celebrate larger body types and defy weight stigma. When African Americans make food choices, taste and cost are not the only factors influencing those choices; the cultural role of food is also considered. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 12 African American girls to identify some of the consequences of this consumption practice that challenges what we argue is a hegemonic taste regime surrounding body size. This work further elucidates the ways in which the African American community has operationalized the concept of cultural capital around the issues of body image to create what we suggest is a type of emotional well-being.
