The presence of an adult male significantly predicted if immature belugas would initiate and participate in socio-sexual behavior. However, partner preferences changed with age. In the first year of life, belugas engaged in sexual behavior with their mother most frequently but preferred to play with older males if given a choice. By the third year of life, belugas engaged in socio-sexual behavior most frequently with other immature animals. These findings enhance our understanding of how belugas develop sexually and socially and have implications for social housing practices of immature belugas.One of the fundamental problems of contemporary history is to understand the processes governing the rise and fall of polities. The universality of boom-and-bust dynamics associated with the life-cycle of polities tempts to treat the problem mathematically and thus brings it to the framework of cliodynamics. Here we introduce a mathematical model of evolving polity under assumption that its evolution is associated with interactions of certain groups of people, forming the polity and differing by their psycho-ethic characteristics. The model is given in terms of ordinary differential equations and the bust dynamics associated with the rise and fall of polities is modelled as an excitation process, which is the non-linear phenomenon, well known in mathematical biology. We consider the deterministic as well as the stochastic version of the model which we fit to the time-scale of civilization's lifespan. We also expand the model to study interaction between two evolving polities. Topical dexamethasone (Dex) administration protects the cornea from the hyperosmotic stress (HS) induced by tears. Pyroptosis participates in the activation of epithelial inflammation during DED. However, it remains unclear whether Dex attenuates the progression of DED through pyroptosis. selleck In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of Dex on DED using both cell and animal models and its underlying mechanism. The inflammatory factors contained in tears were detected using a cytokine assay. The pyroptosis in DED mice and human corneal epithelial cells (HCECs) treated with hyperosmotic medium under various treatments was evaluated by immunohistochemical assays (IHC) or western blotting (WB). RNA expression was manipulated with siRNA or agomir microRNAs and measured using a polymerase chain reaction. The scratch assay was used to assess the migration rate of HCECs. Remaining corneal defects were evaluated using fluorescein staining and photographed using a digital camera. Dex could suppress the release of inflammatory factors and notably attenuate pyroptosis, KCNQ1OT1 expression, and NF-κB activation induced by HS injury in vivo and in vitro. KCNQ1OT1 upregulation could activate pyroptosis by sponging miR-214. Furthermore, KCNQ1OT1 knockdown and miR-214 overexpression reversed the effect of HS, promoted the migration of HCECs, and accelerated corneal wound healing. Dex effectively suppressed HS-induced pyroptosis through the KCNQ1OT1/miR-214/caspase-1 signaling axis by inhibiting the NF-κB activation. Our results provide a novel understanding of the mechanism of Dex as an anti-inflammatory drug in DED.In this Clinical Perspective, we argue that, at least for some patients, formulation, rather than diagnosis, should be the cornerstone in clinical practice in child and adolescent psychiatry. As opposed to a rigid, tick-the-box approach to formulation, we advocate for a conceptualization of formulation that moves the practice of (child and adolescent) psychiatry into the realm of storytelling and construction of narratives. We suggest that the use of role playing and narrative art forms, such as novels or films, during the training may contribute to develop the skills in telling a story (ie, the formulation) about/to a patient.
The objective of this Clinical Update is to review the principles, structures, processes, and outcomes of collaborative mental health care in the pediatric primary care setting.
A search of the literature on this topic from 2001was conducted initially in 2016, yielding 2,279 English-language citations. These citations were supplemented by references suggested by topic experts and identified through Web searches, increasing the yield to 2,467 total citations, of which 1,962 were unduplicated. After sequential review by Update authors at title/abstract and then full-text levels, the citations were winnowed to 219 based on topic relevance. A follow-up search from 2016 was conducted in 2021, yielding 2 additional citations based on nonduplication from initial search and topic relevance.
The collaborative care approach, arising in the 1990s and gaining momentum in the 2000s, aims to extend behavioral health care to the primary care setting. The goal of collaborative care is to conserve the sparse specialty ccialty mental health care for severe and complex cases. Essential supporting activities for effective collaborative care include patient and family engagement, professional education and training, evaluation/demonstration of impact, fiscal sustainability, and advocacy for model dissemination.

To evaluate the efficacy of time outdoors per school day over 2 years on myopia onset and shift.
A prospective, cluster-randomized, examiner-masked, 3-arm trial.
A total of 6295 students aged 6 to 9 years from 24 primary schools in Shanghai, China, stratified and randomized by school in a 111 ratio to control (n= 2037), test I (n= 2329), or test II (n= 1929) group.
An additional 40 or 80 minutes of outdoor time was allocated to each school day for test I and II groups. Children in the control group continued their habitual outdoor time. Objective monitoring of outdoor and indoor time and light intensity each day was measured with a wrist-worn wearable during the second-year follow-up.

Although MDD was initially thought to be primarily triggered through neuronal dysfunction, the pathological alterations in astrocytic function have been previously reported in MDD. We report that chronic restraint stress (CRS) induces astrocyte activation and decreases expression of astrocytic mGluR5 in the hippocampal CA1 of susceptible mice exhibited depressive-like behaviors. Reducing expression of astrocytic mGluR5 in dorsal CA1 simulates CRS-induced depressive-like behaviors and impairs excitatory synaptic function in mice, while overexpression of astrocytic mGluR5 in dorsal CA1 rescues CRS-induced depressive-like traits and excitatory synaptic dysfunction. Thus, we provide direct evidence for an important role of astrocytic mGluR5 in producing the behavioral phenotypes of MDD, supporting astrocytic mGluR5 may serve as an effective therapeutic target for MDD.
Genetic variants in the Beta-glucocerebrosidase gene (GBA1) is a known risk factor for Parkinson's disease. The GBA1 mutations L444P, N370S and many other have been shown to associate with the disease in populations with diverse background. Some GBA1 polymorphisms have a less pronounced effect, and their pathogenicity has been debated. We have previously found associations with L444P, N370S and E326K and Parkinson's disease in Sweden.
In this study we used pyrosequencing to genotype the T369M variant in a large Swedish cohort consisting of 1,131 patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease, and 1,594 control subjects to evaluate the possibility of this variant conferring an increased risk for Parkinson's disease.
The minor allele frequency was 2.15% in patients and 1.76% in controls. Statistical analysis showed that there was no significant difference in allele frequency between patients and control subjects, p-value 0.37, Odds Ratio 1.23 with a 95% confidence interval of 0.82-1.83.

However, the mechanism of ferroptosis in ulcerative colitis (UC) remains to be further investigated. In the present study, we merged the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) of UC in GEO database with the ferroptosis-related genes of FerrDb for bioinformatics analysis and successfully screened out the ferroptosis-related hub gene STAT3 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 3). Then we further validated the role of STAT3-mediated ferroptosis in vitro and in vivo models of colitis. The results showed that ferroptosis was increased in DSS-induced colitis, salmonella typhimurium (S. Tm) colitis and H2O2-induced IEC-6 cells. And the phosphorylation level of the hub gene STAT3 was down-regulated in IEC-6 cells treated with H2O2, while Fer-1, an ferroptosis inhibitor, reactivated the phosphorylation level of STAT3. In addition, co-treatment of cells with H2O2 and STAT3 inhibitor (stattic) showed an additive effect on the extent of ferroptosis.
