Few studies have investigated corporate political activity by unhealthy commodity industries in low- and middle-income countries, and the significance of social and political context has been largely neglected. This study aimed to explore the stalled development of marketing restriction policies in Brazil with an analysis of strategies used to undermine the Legal Framework for Early Childhood. Using a constructivist approach based on a typology of corporate political strategies, decision-making processes were assessed to understand interference by food companies in the Legal Framework, and how this was perceived by policy actors. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with public health advocates, academics and legislature officials. Three broad strategies that contributed to the stalling of marketing restrictions in the Legal Framework were identified relational approaches to policy influence; collective participation in formal decision-making; and specific strategy choices (information and financial incentives). Key opportunities for policy influence through informal social networks in the 'backstage' of policy making are found to privilege commercial sector actors. Informal policy making may have a critical function in obstructing the development of health-focused regulation in Brazil. This highlights the need for a better understanding of non-codified and hidden corporate efforts to shape the policy environment. This study explored the processes involved when the bereaved use Facebook to continue bonds with the deceased. Grounded theory was used to analyze Facebook pages and interviews with bereaved Facebook users. Individual attempts at connection, such as posting about the deceased person, were bolstered by others witnessing and replying to the posts. Collective reminiscence occurred through the sharing of memories about the deceased, which sometimes led to learning new things about them. These individual and collective processes helped to maintain and transform a connection with the deceased person, who for some participants was "still there" on Facebook. We estimated modern contraceptive prevalence rate (mCPR) and examined predictors of modern contraceptives utilization amongst 1,445 sampled reproductive age women in Lagos (Nigeria's epicenter) during the devastating COVID-19 pandemic. Estimated mCPR was 30.8%. Women aged 20-29 years were 50% (95%CI0.37-0.71) less likely to use modern contraceptives during the pandemic than those 30-39 years. Married and divorced women were about three (95%CI1.37-5.25) and over three (95%CI1.32-7.79) times more likely to use modern contraceptives compared to single women. Though mCPR has not reduced, sustained contraceptive needs assessment of sometimes obscure sub-populations is required, especially if outbreaks like COVID-19 become our 'new normal'.The present study aimed to investigate the role of SIRT3 and inflammatory factors in bortezomib-induced peripheral neuropathy (PN). This prospective observational cohort study included a total of 159 patients of multiple myeloma patients during June 2016 to June 2019. All patients received the strategy of bortezomib and dexamethasone and were further divided into the PN group and the non-PN group. Serum SIRT3, CRP, IL-6 and TNF-α levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). During the study period, 76 (47.8%) patients developed PN. The inflammatory factors all gradually decreased and SIRT3 levels were gradually increased after treatment by bortezomib combined with dexamethasone compared with the baseline. The levels of all inflammatory factors were markedly higher, while SIRT3 levels were lower in PN patients compared with the non-PN patients at the same time point after treatment. In PN grade III patients, the serum levels of CRP, IL-6 and TNF-α were significantly higher, while serum levels of SIRT3 were markedly lower than the grade I-II patients. SIRT3 was negatively correlated with CRP, IL-6 and TNF-α. After nursing treatment and reduction of bortezomib dose, the levels of SIRT3 significantly increased, while levels of inflammatory decreased in PN patients with grade III. SIRT3 and inflammatory factors showed the potential for diagnosis of bortezomib-induced PN. Besides, SIRT3, IL-6 and TNF-α were the independent risk factors for MM patients developing PN after treatment of bortezomib. Higher inflammatory factors and lower SIRT3 might be associated with the development of bortezomib-induced PN in multiple myeloma patients, which might be reversed by decreased bortezomib dose and proper nursing treatment.Undergraduate statistics in psychology is an important, often challenging, course for students. The focus in psychology tends to be on hypothesis tests, such as t tests and analysis of variance. While adequate for some questions, there are many other topics we might include that could improve that data analytic abilities of students and improve psychological science in the long run. Verteporfin purchase Topics such as generalized linear modeling, multilevel modeling, Bayesian statistics, model building and comparison, and causal analysis, could be introduced in an undergraduate psychological statistics course. For each topic, I discuss their importance and provide sources for instructor's continuing education. These topics would give students greater flexibility in analyzing data, allow them to conduct more meaningful analyses, allow them to understand more modern data analytic approaches, and potentially help the field of psychology in the long run, by being one part of the strategy to address the reproducibility problem.
Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a rare and deadly disease characterized by remodeling of the pulmonary vasculature and increased pulmonary artery pressure. hypobaric pulmonary hypertension (HPH) is clinically classified as group 4 of pulmonary hypertension and has a poor prognosis . Previous reports showed that HPH was associated with increased endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. The protein kinase R-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK) is an ER-associated stress protein. However, to date, its physiological effects on HPH and RVF development remains unknown. This study aimed to assess PERK's role in HPH and RV function using
experimental model.
-knockout male Sprague-Dawley rats were generated and were housed in either a hypobaric chamber or in a normoxic environment. After stimulation for 4weeks, the hemodynamic parameters of the rats were measured. The heart and lungs were harvested for pathological observation. Blood was collected for the detection of inflammatory indexes. The right ventricle tissue was collected to assess phosphorylated-AKT, ROCK1, ET1, and MMP2 protein expression.
Under normal conditions,
rats showed no changes in mPAP(mean pulmonary artery pressure), RVHI(Right ventricular hypertrophy index), cardiomyocyte size and interstitial fibrosis, and pulmonary vascular remodeling. However, in response to chronic hypoxia,
rats exhibited decreased in mPAP, RVHI, ventricular fibrosis, and lung remodeling compared to wild-type rats.
rats also showed lower expression of phosphor-AKT, ROCK1, ET1, and MMP2 protein in response to chronic hypoxia.
These findings suggest that
heterozygosity protects against HPH and
may be a suitable target for treating HPH.
These findings suggest that Perk heterozygosity protects against HPH and Perk may be a suitable target for treating HPH.
This report aims to present a case of dengue-related myopic shift.
This is a case report of a patient with dengue-related transient myopia, and demonstrates possible underlying pathophysiology.
A 38-year-old gentleman presented with bilateral blurring of vision with an unaided visual acuity (VA) of 6/120 bilaterally. He had a refractive error of -2.50 dioptres in the right eye, and -3.50 dioptres in the left eye. Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) revealed suprachoroidal effusion with anterior displacement of the lens-iris complex bilaterally. Biometry performed showed lens thickness (LT) of 4.47 mm in the right eye, and 4.65 mm in the left eye. His unaided VA was noted to be 6/6 bilaterally 4days later.
Dengue-related myopic shift was likely secondary to two mechanisms. Firstly, suprachoroidal effusion resulted in an anterior displacement of the lens-iris complex. Secondly, there was an increase in the antero-posterior diameter of the lens, resulting in index myopia.

We propose a novel mechanism generating pollen limitation conflicting selection by pollinators and antagonists on pollinator attraction traits. We introduce a heuristic model demonstrating antagonist-induced adaptive pollen limitation and present a field study illustrating its occurrence in a wild population. For antagonist-induced adaptive pollen limitation to occur, four criteria must be met (1) correlated attraction of pollinators and antagonists; (2) greater response by antagonists than pollinators to altered investment in attraction traits; (3) reduced investment in pollinator attraction, leading to pollen limitation; and (4) higher fitness for plants with reduced investment in pollinator attraction. We surveyed nectar robbery and reproductive output for 109 Odontonema cuspidatum (Acanthaceae) plants in a pollen-limited population over 2 years and used experimental floral arrays to evaluate how flower number affects pollination and nectar robbery. Both pollinators and nectar robbers preferred larger floral displays and nectar robbery reduced reproductive output, suggesting conflicting selection. Survey and experimental data agreed closely on the optimum flower number under antagonist-induced pollen limitation; this number was substantially overrepresented in the population. While criteria for antagonist-induced adaptive pollen limitation are restrictive, the necessary conditions may often be realized. Considering interactions beyond the plant-pollinator dyad illuminates previously overlooked mechanisms generating pollen limitation.AbstractSocial animals benefit from their groupmates, so why do they sometimes kill each other's offspring? Using 30 years of data from multiple groups of wild spotted hyenas, we address three critical aims for understanding infanticide in any species (1) quantify the contribution of infanticide to overall mortality, (2) describe the circumstances under which infanticide occurs, and (3) evaluate hypotheses about the evolution of infanticide. We find that infanticide, although observed only rarely, is in fact a leading source of juvenile mortality. Infanticide accounted for 24% of juvenile mortality, and one in 10 hyenas born in our population perished as a result of infanticide. In all observed cases of infanticide, killers were adult females, but victims could be of both sexes. Of four hypotheses regarding the evolution of infanticide, we found the most support for the hypothesis that infanticide in spotted hyenas reflects competition over social status among matrilines.
