The incidence of spinal cord injury in Brazil is increasing. It is important to understand more about how individuals are living with spinal cord injury.

Cross-sectional, observational study of individuals with spinal cord injury in south-eastern Brazil.

A questionnaire with 125 questions was applied to individuals diagnosed with spinal cord injury. Participants were recruited by survey team from 2 rehabilitation centres (both in south-eastern Brazil) that treat persons diagnosed with SCI. Personal characteristics, associated health conditions, quality of life, work status, environmental factors, and other functioning-related aspects were evaluated.

A total of 201 individuals participated in the survey. Of these, 79% were male, mean age 44 years, 60% were considered paraplegic, and the major causes of impairment were firearm injuries and road traffic accidents. Spasticity was the most frequently reported health condition, followed by neuropathic pain. Hesperadin manufacturer 50% of subjects did not report any difficulty withife, they still encounter disabling environmental barriers that make their life more difficult, such as poor accessibility of public spaces, and only a small proportion (10%) returned to work after their injury. This study provides an initial overview of the lived experience of people with spinal cord injury in south-eastern Brazil and should serve as a starting point for future research on this population.
Conventional serum tumor markers (STMs) for testicular germ cell tumors (GCTs) offer limited performance with particularly poor sensitivity in cases of minimal residual disease and pure seminoma. While growing evidence has indicated miR-371a-3p to be a superior biomarker, its utility in detecting pure seminoma at recurrence has not been extensively explored. This study's objective was to explore miR-371a-3p's utility in detecting metastatic pure seminoma at retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND).

RNA was isolated from patient serum samples collected pre-RPLND. Fifteen patients were assigned to our 'benign' (n = 6) or 'seminoma' (n = 9) group based on pathological confirmation of viable seminoma. Five of the patients received chemotherapy before RPLND (PC-RPLND), and 10 were chemotherapy naïve. MiR-371a-3p expression was quantified via RT-quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The Cq values were statistically evaluated to obtain performance measurements.

Median relative expression of miR-371a-3p eminoma at RPLND is a clinical context, wherein the miRNA assay may require further refinement.
MiR-371a-3p outperformed STMs in the primary RPLND settings. However, miR-371a-3p was not a robust predictor of pathology in the PC setting. These results suggest that pure seminoma at RPLND is a clinical context, wherein the miRNA assay may require further refinement.Aggregation-induced emission (AIE) materials with photocyclization (PC) reactions exhibit rich photophysical and photochemical activities. Understanding the mechanism behind is essential to the design of effective AIE materials. Herein, we employ a polarizable continuum model (PCM) and the hybrid quantum mechanics and molecular mechanics (QM/MM) approach, to study the luminescent properties of PC-typed AIEgens, SIP-2 and DPI, in both solution and crystalline states. The calculated results indicate that the fluorescence quantum yields (ΦF) of SIP-2 and DPI under different environments are mainly related to the competition between the PC reaction and aggregation induced restriction of phenyl ring rotational motions. In solution, SIP-2 and DPI undergo PC reactions to form a C-C bond between the phenyl rings A and B, which provides an important non-radiative decay channel and dramatically reduces the fluorescence intensity. Upon aggregation, the restricted rotational motion of rings A and B blocks the PC reaction and reduces the reorganization energy, which lowers the non-radiative decay rate constant (kIC) and benefits the ΦF. This is consistent with the experimental phenomenon that both SIP-2 and DPI exhibit the AIE effect. In addition, the introduction of the rigid spiro backbone of SIP-2 increases the steric effect, further limiting the phenyl ring rotation and PC reaction, resulting in an increase in the fluorescence intensity. Our calculations not only show the detailed mechanism of PC-typed AIEgens but also provide theoretical guidance for the further rational design of efficient AIEgens.
Balloon kyphoplasty with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) represents the standard procedure for the treatment of thoracic and lumbar type A compression fractures. However, an increased degeneration in adjacent intervertebral disks following PMMA kyphoplasty has been demonstrated in elderly patients. Calcium phosphate cement (CPC) appears to be superior to PMMA for the intravertebral stabilization in younger patients. It remains unkown whether CPC kyphoplasty causes degeneration of adjacent disks in adolescents.

Seven adolescents with thoracolumbar spine fractures underwent kyphoplasty at a mean age of 14.5 years (range 10-18). At a mean follow-up of 3.7 years (range 1 to 4.8) postoperatively, 3.0 Tesla magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spine was performed to assess intervertebral disk degeneration by quantitative T2 relaxation maps and subjective ratings using modified Pfirrmann scores. A total of 56 intervertebral disks was analyzed. Initial computed tomography (CT) examinations served as basis to assess the severity of adjacent endplate injuries in terms of articular step-offs.

Initial imaging detected 18 thoracolumbar vertebral body fractures of which 9 were treated with CPC kyphoplasty. Quantitative follow-up MRI revealed signs of degeneration in 10 (17.9%) of the examined 56 intervertebral disks, 7 of them adjacent to a previously fractured vertebral body. Signs of disk degeneration were significantly higher in caudal endplates with articular step-offs larger than 5 mm compared to fractured vertebral bodies without endplate step-offs.

Quantitative MRI follow-ups did not suggest CPC-related intervertebral disk degradations following thoracolumbar kyphoplasty in adolescents, but indicated disk alterations correlating to adjacent endplate fracture severity.

Although debate remains about the saliency and relevance of pro-choice and pro-life labels (as abortion belief indicators), they have been consistently used for decades to broadly designate abortion identity. However, clear labels are less apparent in other languages (e.g., Spanish). Social media, as an exploratory data science tool, can be leveraged to identify the presence and popularity of online abortion identity labels and how they are contextualized online.

This study aims to determine how popularly used Spanish-language pro-choice and pro-life identity labels are contextualized online.

We used Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic models, an unsupervised natural language processing (NLP) application, to generate themes about Spanish language tweets categorized by Spanish abortion identity labels (1) proelección (pro-choice); (2) derecho a decidir (right to choose); (3) proaborto (pro-abortion); (4) provida (pro-life); (5) antiaborto (anti-abortion); and (6) derecho a vivir (right to life). We manually reviewed themes for each identity label to assess scope.

All six identity labels included in our analysis contained some references to abortion. However, several labels were not exclusive to abortion. Proelección (pro-choice), for example, contained several themes related to ongoing presidential elections.

No singular Spanish abortion identity label encapsulates abortion beliefs; however, there are several viable options. Just as the debate remains ongoing about pro-choice and pro-life as accurate indicators of abortion beliefs in English, we must also consider that identity is more complex than binary labels in Spanish.

The S-orientated interfaces, including interfaces with interstitial S or S vacancies, were adopted as samples. All the heterostructures show a smaller yield stress than 2H and 1T' MoS2, and fractures always occur at the interface. The heterostructures are either metallic or half-metallic. Some of the heterointerfaces show great catalytic ability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In particular, the Gibbs free energy of H adsorption is as low as -0.028 eV for the S-LU-sint structure. Moreover, a small strain of 4% can improve the HER catalytic activity for several heterostructures. Our results show that 2H-1T' MoS2 heterointerfaces are potential catalysts for the HER.Graphynes (GYs) are two-dimensional alloptropic forms of carbon consisting of periodically arranged sp- and sp2-hybridized carbon atoms in a planar structure. Graphynes can be formally created from graphene by inserting sp-hybridized carbon links into selected points of the graphene lattice. Depending on where the links are introduced, several forms of graphynes have been proposed with properties that make them potential candidates for new generation electronics or for applications in chemical processes. Since the applications of each form of GY depend on its structure, it is of interest to experimentally distinguish different forms of graphynes. In this paper we propose nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as a potential method of choice for such distinction. We computationally investigate on the DFT level the 13C-NMR chemical shifts for α-, β-, γ-, rhombic, and 6,6,12-graphynes, and α- and γ-graphdiynes. We perform the calculations both in periodic systems and with approximate finite models. The results show that NMR chemical shifts in graphynes are dependent on the structure and reflect the local bonding around the carbon nucleus. Interestingly, NMR shifts of several graphynes show anomalous values, differing significantly from shifts found in typical sp2-hybridized systems. We analyze these results in terms of local structural parameters and qualitatively investigate the possible origins of these anomalous NMR shifts. The results show that NMR is a viable method for determining the structure of graphynes and their finite precursor molecules.
Atezolizumab-bevacizumab is the new standard for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) but its impact on portal hypertension (PHT) is unknown. We aimed to identify predictive factors of acute variceal bleeding (AVB) and to monitor PHT parameters under treatment.

We conducted a prospective study including all cirrhotic patients treated with atezolizumab-bevacizumab since 2020. We performed monitoring of PHT using upper endoscopy at inclusion and at 6months and hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) at inclusion, 3 and 6months after the beginning of treatment. We also included a retrospective series of patients treated with sorafenib. Time-to-events data were estimated by Kaplan-Meier with the log-rank test, along with Cox models.

Forty-three patients treated with atezolizumab-bevacizumab were included (male 79.1%, Child-Pugh A 86%). At baseline, 48.8% were treated with curative anticoagulation, 16.3% already experienced AVB and 25.6% had large oesophageal varices (EV). Sorafenib group characteristics were similar.
