Aquaculture practices at sea are far from impact neutral and remain an important source of marine plastic pollution. With projected rapid continual growth in the sector, if left unmanaged, aquaculture pollution can have detrimental environmental and social implications. While marine plastic pollution generally originates from mismanaged waste from land, waste from ships and fishing gear produce a unique threat to the global seas. Using a choice experiment, we explore preference for a marine debris removal and prevention programme focusing on derelict fishing gear. Additionally, we explore preferences for increasing removal efforts of debris in the North Western Hawaiian Islands. Briefly, in chronic exposure experiments ciliate communities were exposed to different concentrations (0, 1, 2, 4 and 8 mg ml-1) of nitrofurazone. Relative Abundance of ciliates in all body-size categories decreased significantly, whereas their frequency of occurrence and probability densities showed hormetic-like responses in a dose dependent manner. Additionally, body-size distinctness indices were influenced by toxic stress and significantly departed from an expectation at higher nitrofurazone concentrations. Taken together, our results demonstrated that body-size spectra and body-size distinctness offered clear evidence of nitrofurazone toxicity in periphytic ciliates. Body-size spectra can therefore be used as a pivotal biomarker to determine the ecotoxicity of nitrofurazone in aquatic environments.Fouling communities were studied in three port systems of Northern Tyrrhenian Sea (Western Mediterranean), focusing on the occurrence of non-indigenous species (NIS). For each port system two harbour types (large port and recreational marina) were sampled and, within each large port, fouling samples were collected considering two use destinations (commercial and touristic harbour). Among the 431 taxa identified, forty-two were alien or cryptogenic, four of which were new records for the study area. Harbour type and use destination shaped fouling communities and NIS assemblages, with their relative influence varying among different port systems. High fouling variability was detected within port environments and between different marinas. NIS showed the highest occurrence in large ports, in which the touristic harbour generally hosted the greatest amount. Therefore, the touristic harbours within large ports were identified as susceptible areas for NIS establishment and their possible subsequent spread at local scale through recreational maritime traffic.Estuarine ecosystems are considered hotspots for productivity, biogeochemical cycling and biodiversity, however, their functions and services are threatened by several anthropogenic pressures. We investigated how abundance and diversity of benthic macrofauna, and their functional traits, correlate to sediment biogeochemistry and nutrient concentrations throughout an estuarine-to-hypersaline lagoon. Benthic communities and functional traits were significantly different across the sites analysed, with higher abundance and more traits expressed in the estuarine region. The results revealed that the benthic trait differences correlated with sediment biogeochemistry and nutrient concentrations in the system. The estuarine regions were dominated by high abundance of large burrowing and bioturbating macrofauna, promoting nutrient cycling and organic matter mineralisation, while these organisms were absent in the hypersaline lagoon, favouring accumulation of organic matter and nutrients in the sediment. The results highlight the importance of preserving healthy benthic communities to maintain ecosystem functioning and mitigate the potential impacts of eutrophication in estuarine ecosystems.Seawater warming and increased incidence of marine heatwaves (MHW) are threatening the integrity of coastal marine habitats including seagrasses, which are particularly vulnerable to climate changes. Novel stress tolerance-enhancing strategies, including thermo-priming, have been extensively applied in terrestrial plants for enhancing resilience capacity under the re-occurrence of a stress event. We applied, for the first time in seedlings of the Mediterranean seagrass Posidonia oceanica, a thermo-priming treatment through the exposure to a simulated warming event. We analyzed the photo-physiological and growth performance of primed and non-primed seedlings, and the gene expression responses of selected genes (i.e. stress-, photosynthesis- and epigenetic-related genes). Results revealed that during the re-occurring stress event, primed seedlings performed better than unprimed showing unaltered photo-physiology supported by high expression levels of genes related to stress response, photosynthesis, and epigenetic modifications. These findings offer new opportunities to improve conservation and restoration efforts in a future scenario of environmental changes.Specific pathogen-free (SPF) animals are bred and managed to exclude pathogens associated with significant morbidity or mortality that may secondarily pose a risk to public health, food safety and food security, and research replicability. Generating and maintaining SPF animals requires detailed biosecurity planning for control of housing, environmental, and husbandry factors and a history of regimented pathogen testing. Successful programs involve comprehensive risk analysis and exclusion protocols that are rooted in a thorough understanding of pathogen lifecycle and modes of transmission. In this manuscript we review the current state of SPF in domestic agriculture (pigs and poultry), aquaculture (salmonids and shrimp), and small laboratory mammals. As the use of laboratory fish, especially zebrafish (Danio rerio), as models of human disease is expanding exponentially, it is prudent to define standards for SPF in this field. We use the guiding principles from other SPF industries and evaluate zebrafish pathogens against criteria to be on an SPF list, to propose recommendations for establishing and maintaining SPF laboratory zebrafish.Providing tablets of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3), the biologically active metabolite of vitamin D3, in a rumen bolus may be used as prevention for periparturient hypocalcemia in dairy cows. This study investigated the pharmacokinetics of 1,25(OH)2D3 glycosides extracted from Solanum glaucophyllum (SGE) on blood serum 1,25(OH)2D3, Ca, P and Mg response in dry pregnant dairy cows. Boluses contained tablets of SGE which differed in their release properties (rapid release, slow release and combination) and galenics (200 μg uncoated, 300 μg and 500 μg uncoated or coated, 2 × 500 μg uncoated). Nineteen blood samples were collected from 29 cows between 96 h before and 336 h after bolus administration. Blood serum 1,25(OH)2D3, Ca and P increased between 12 h and 120 h, 12 h and 264 h and 24 h and 264 h, respectively. Highest values were reached at 30 h, 72 h and 120 h for 1,25(OH)2D3, Ca and P, respectively. Baseline values were then reached at 216 h for 1,25(OH)2D3 and 336 h for Ca and P. Concentration of Mg decreased between 24 h and 216 h, before reaching values comparable to baseline at 264 h. Highest Ca values were obtained with the combined rapid and slow release properties (500 μg) and there was no effect from coating on pharmacokinetics. In conclusion, the antepartum oral SGE bolus administration may be suitable for the prevention of periparturient hypocalcemia.
Studies using the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria for patients with liver cirrhosis are limited. This study aimed to assess the impact of malnutrition according to the GLIM criteria on the outcomes of patients awaiting a liver transplant (LTx) and compare these criteria with Subjective Global Assessment (SGA).

This retrospective observational study included adult patients awaiting LTx. Patient clinical data, nutritional status according to various tools including SGA, and resting energy expenditure were assessed. The distinct phenotypic and etiologic criteria provided 36 different GLIM combinations. The GLIM criteria and SGA were compared using the kappa coefficient. The variables associated with mortality before and after the LTx and with a longer length of stay (LOS) after LTx (≥18 days) were assessed by Cox regression and logistic regression analyses, respectively.

A total of 152 patients were included [median age 52.0 (interquartile range 46.5-59.5) years; 66.4% men; 63.2% malnourished according to SGA]. The prevalence of malnutrition according to the GLIM criteria ranged from 0.7% to 30.9%. The majority of the GLIM combinations exhibited poor agreement with SGA. Independent predictors of mortality before and after LTx were presence of ascites or edema (p=0.011; HR2.58; CI95%1.24-5.36), GLIM 32 (PA-phase angle+MELD) (p=0.026; HR2.08; CI95%1.09-3.97), GLIM 33 (PA+MELD-Na≥12) (p=0.018; HR2.17; CI95%1.14-4.13), and GLIM 34 (PA+Child-Pugh) (p=0.043; HR1.96; CI95%1.02-3.77). Malnutrition according to GLIM 28 (handgrip strength+Child-Pugh) was independently associated with a longer LOS (p=0.029; OR7.21; CI95%1.22-42.50).

Although both dynapenia and abdominal obesity have negative impact on physical function and health, few prospective studies evaluate the association of dynapenic abdominal obesity (D/AO) with gait speed and falls. Our aim was to examine the combined effect of low muscle strength and abdominal obesity on long-term gait speed and falls in older adults.

We used longitudinal data from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA), including 4987 individuals aged 60 years and over. Grip strength and waist circumference were measured at baseline. Gait speed and fall events (falls, recurrent falls, and fall-related injury) were evaluated during a 14-year follow-up. The study population were divided into nondynapenic nonabdominal obesity (ND/NAO), nondynapenic abdominal obesity (ND/AO), dynapenic nonabdominal obesity (D/NAO), and D/AO, according to the sex-specific grip strength (<16kg for women and <26kg for men) and waist circumference (>88cm for women and >102cm for men). We used generalized estimating equation (GEE) model with gait speed as the outcome and cox proportional hazards models with fall events as the outcome.
