Managers and leaders have a critical role to play in sexual and gender-based harassment prevention within organizations. Although the Veterans Health Administration has committed to eliminating harassment through national directives and training programs, it is unclear how aware local-level managers and leaders are about public harassment at their facilities and how they perceive sexual and gender-based harassment. We examined middle managers' and leaders' views about whether harassment is perceived as a problem locally, and what policies and procedures (if any) are in place to address public harassment.

We conducted 69 semistructured telephone interviews with middle managers and facility leaders before implementation of an evidence-based quality improvement project designed to improve delivery of comprehensive women's health care. Transcripts were coded using the constant comparative method and analyzed for overarching themes.

Mistreatment by health care providers disproportionately affects Black, Indigenous, and other people of color in the United States. The goal of this study is to adapt the global Person-Centered Maternity Care (PCMC) scale for use in the United States, with particular attention to the experiences of Black women and birthing people.

We used a community-engaged approach including expert reviews and cognitive interviews to assess content validity, relevance, comprehension, and comprehensiveness of the PCMC items. Surveys of 297 postpartum people, 82% of whom identified as Black, were used for psychometric analysis in which we assessed construct and criterion validity and reliability. Variations in histone sequences within each family of histones expands the chromatin repertoire and provide further mechanisms for regulation and signaling. While variants are known to be present in certain genomic loci and carry out important functions, much remains unknown about variant-specific PTMs and their role in regulating chromatin. This ambiguity is in part due to the limited technologies and appropriate reagents to identify and quantitate variant-specific PTMs. Nonetheless, histone variants are an integral portion of the chromatin system and the understanding of their modifications and resolving how PTMs function differently on specific variants is paramount to the advancement of the field. Here we review the current knowledge on post-translational modifications specific to histone variants, with an emphasis on well-characterized PTMs of known function. While not every possible PTM is addressed, we present key variant-specific PTMs and what is known about their function and mechanisms in convenient reference tables.Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a well-defined cellular process that was discovered in chicken embryos and described as "epithelial to mesenchymal transformation" [1]. During EMT, epithelial cells lose their epithelial features and acquire mesenchymal character with migratory potential. EMT has subsequently been shown to be essential for both developmental and pathological processes including embryo morphogenesis, wound healing, tissue fibrosis and cancer [2]. During the past 5 years, interest and study of EMT especially in cancer biology have increased exponentially due to the implied role of EMT in multiple aspects of malignancy such as cell invasion, survival, stemness, metastasis, therapeutic resistance and tumor heterogeneity [3]. Since the process of EMT in embryogenesis and cancer progression shares similar phenotypic changes, core transcription factors and molecular mechanisms, it has been proposed that the initiation and development of carcinoma could be attributed to abnormal activation of EMT factors usually required for normal embryo development. Therefore, developmental EMT mechanisms, whose timing, location, and tissue origin are strictly regulated, could prove useful for uncovering new insights into the phenotypic changes and corresponding gene regulatory control of EMT under pathological conditions. In this review, we initially provide an overview of the phenotypic and molecular mechanisms involved in EMT and discuss the newly emerging concept of epithelial to mesenchymal plasticity (EMP). Then we focus on our current knowledge of a classic developmental EMT event, neural crest cell (NCC) delamination, highlighting key differences in our understanding of NCC EMT between mammalian and non-mammalian species. Lastly, we highlight available tools and future directions to advance our understanding of mammalian NCC EMT.
Integrins avβ6 and avβ8 are expressed by keratinocytes and transactivate latent TGFβ. In a murine model, integrin mediated activation of TGFβ has been shown to be critical in maintaining skin homeostasis, specifically playing roles in epidermal retention of Langerhans cells and resident memory cells T cells (Trm).

We examine expression of Integrins β6 and β8 in human skin, inflammatory skin disease, benign nevi, and melanoma and hypothesize that integrin expression is dysregulated in disease.

Using immunohistochemistry, we stained tissue from normal human skin (n=8), psoriasis (n=6), atopic dermatitis (n=6), lichen planus (n=5), benign nevi (n=24), and melanoma (n=25) with anti-integrin β6 and anti-integrin β8 to survey expression pattern. We also performed a retrospective chart review in the melanoma cohort to examine if integrin β6 and β8 expression was associated with increased Breslow depth and worse prognostic staging.

Here, we show that human keratinocytes express integrins β6 and β8, similar to murine keratinocytes. We also found that inflammatory skin conditions have increased Integrin β6, but not Integrin β8 expression. Furthermore, we identified that melanomas have greatly increased expression of integrin β8 compared to nevi. Additionally, high expression of integrin β8 was correlated with greater Breslow depth at diagnosis and with worse prognostic staging.

These findings demonstrate that like murine keratinocytes, human keratinocytes express integrin β6 and β8 under steady state conditions. Moreover, altered integrin expression may participate in the development or maintenance of cutaneous inflammation as well as tumor immune evasion.

As a new simple anthropometric index, the weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI) appears to be superior to body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) in assessing both muscle and fat mass. We aimed to explore the association of WWI with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in southern China.

A total of 12,447 participants (mean age, 59.0±13.3 years; 40.6% men) in Jiangxi Province from the China Hypertension Survey study were included. WWI was defined as WC divided by the square root of weight. The outcome was all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. During a median follow-up of 5.6 years, 838 all-cause deaths occurred, with 390 cardiovascular deaths. Overall, there was a nonlinear positive relationship of WWI with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Accordingly, compared with participants in quartiles 1-3 (<11.2 cm/√kg), a significant higher risk of all-cause mortality (HR 1.36, 95% CI 1.17, 1.58) and cardiovascular mortality (HR 1.43, 95% CI 1.15, 1.77) were found in quartile 4 (≥11.2 cm/√kg). No significant interactions were found in any of the subgroups (sex, age, area, physical activity, current smoking, current alcohol drinking, hypertension, and stroke).

The role of diet in blood lipids is scarcely investigated in adults at risk of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) and even less studied regarding their socioeconomic status (SES). This study aimed to investigate the associations of diet quality with blood lipids in adults from families at high-risk for developing T2DM from six European countries, considering their SES.

In total 2049 adults (67% women) from relatively low-SES regions and high T2DM risk families were enrolled. Dietary habits, sedentary behaviour and sociodemographic characteristics were assessed using standardised questionnaires.
