The current work leverages the unique optical properties of semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) to develop a prototype of a novel paper-based near-infrared optical nose (NIRON). We have drop-dried an array of SWCNTs encapsulated with a wide variety of peptides on a paper substrate and continuously imaged the emitted SWCNTs fluorescence using a CMOS camera. Odors and different volatile molecules were passed above the array in a flow chamber, resulting in unique modulation patterns of the SWCNT photoluminescence (PL). Quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements performed in parallel confirmed the direct binding between the vapor molecules and the peptide-SWCNTs. PL levels measured before and during exposure demonstrate distinct responses to the four tested alcoholic vapors (ethanol, methanol, propanol, and isopropanol). In addition, machine learning tools directly applied to the fluorescence images allow us to distinguish between the aromas of red wine, beer, and vodka. Further, we show that the developed sensor can detect limonene, undecanal, and geraniol vapors, and differentiate between their smells utilizing the PL response pattern. This novel paper-based optical biosensor provides data in real-time, and is recoverable and suitable for working at room temperature and in a wide range of humidity levels. This platform opens new avenues for real-time sensing of volatile chemical compounds, odors, and flavors.Nanostructure with precisely controllable narrow gap width remains a great challenge, especially at the sub-nanoscale level. Here, a versatile strategy named as DNA-assisted synthesis of ortho-nanodimer (DaSON) is proposed to fabricate Ag (Au) nanodimers with a uniform gap width from nanometers to angstroms. In such a strategy, two nanoparticles are constrained by the equilibrium state of the DNA hybridization and electrostatic repulsion to form zipper-like ortho-nanostructures with an extremely uniform gap whose width can be finely adjusted at nanoscale or sub-nanoscale by changing the DNA sequence and the surface charge of nanoparticles. The inherent strong electromagnetic coupling in the uniform sub-nanometer gap can generates an unparalleled SERS enhancement together with an extraordinary reproducibility. Compared with conventional DNA-based nano-gap fabrication strategy, the DaSON strategy enhances the SERS intensity for more than two orders of magnitude with a detection limit of 100 aM for DNA, and significantly improves the reproducibility in both labeled and label-free SERS sensing applications. Moreover, the DaSON strategy holds wide applicability for arbitrary kinds of DNA-modifiable nanoparticles. Therefore, we believe that the DaSON strategy provides an innovative method for the synthesis of nanostructures with controllable nanogaps and has a promising future in multiple fields including nanotechnology, catalysis and photonics.
Recently, brain connectivity networks have been used for the classification of neurological disorder, such as Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) or Alzheimer's disease (AD). Network analysis provides a new way for exploring the association between brain functional deficits and the underlying structural disruption related to brain disorders. In this work we build upon graph neural network in order to learn useful representations for graph classification in an end-to-end fashion. Specifically, we propose a hierarchical GCN framework (called hi-GCN) to learn the graph feature embedding while considering the network topology information and subject's association at the same time.

To demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, we evaluate the performance of the proposed method on the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) dataset and Autismucture in individual brain network and the subject's correlation in the global population network, which can capture the most essential embedding features to improve the classification performance of disease diagnosis. Moreover, the proposed jointly optimizing strategy also achieves faster training and easier convergence than both the hi-GCN with pre-training and two-step supervision.

The survey was distributed internationally to families with a baby(ies) affected by LOGBS infection. The questionnaire was designed as a collaborative effort by Group B Strep Support, its medical advisory panel members, midwives, neonatologists, parents and volunteer analysts. Data were collected from June to September in 2018.

531 participants responded. 252 babies (55 %) made a full recovery from their LOGBS infection, 145 (32 %) recovered with long term sequelae and 61 (13 %) died. 126 respondents (32 %) felt there was a minor to substantial impact on their child's day to day life as a consequence of LOGBS infection.
