Replacing French Door Glass
It is fairly simple to replace a broken glass pane in a French door. Cleaning the glass, removing trim and molding, then installing a new pane of glass is all that's required.
French doors feature multiple glass panes that are separated by functional muntin bars also known as mullions. They are available in a variety of styles and can include triple-pane glass to increase energy efficiency, reduce sound and control the glare.
How do you replace a damaged glass pane
Wear rubber gloves and safety goggles before you begin to replace the glass. This will shield you from any broken glass shards that might fall during the process. Work in an open area like garages and keep your children out. For better access, it's best to remove your window frame from its ledge. However, you can still replace one pane of glass without having to remove the entire frame.
With a putty knife, scrape off any old caulking or glazing compound around the edges of the window sash. Be careful not to scratch the wood molding that holds the window in place, since you'll need it in the future to hold the new pane.
If you're working with a steel-casement windows, the window may be secured with metal glazing points. These points, as well as the old putty, need to be removed before you can take the pane from the frame. Paint scraper or chisel will work. If the putty is difficult to get rid of, you can use a heat gun to soften it. Place the heat gun one inch away from the glass, and move it forwards and backwards to spread the warmth. Double-up the aluminum foil and then place it on the glass adjacent to it. This will prevent them from breaking due to the heat.
After you've removed the old glass, apply a damp cloth and clean the inside of the window sash in order to remove any dust or dirt. Now you can install a new glass pane.
To cut a glass piece to size first, take measurements of the width and height of the existing opening. To purchase a new glass pane that fits into the door frame, measure these measurements and subtract an eighth inch from each side. Many hardware stores can cut a piece of glass for you when they have the measurements.
Putty that is warm in your hands and roll it into a length of 3/4 inch thick. Position the putty on the edge of the exposed rabbet and rest the blade of your knife at a 45 degree angle against the frame rabbet. Pull the knife across the glass's edge in a smooth, straight line to cut a section of the pane. Repeat the process with the other edges of the pane. Then, scrape away the excess putty.
Take the broken Pane
A damaged pane of glass in a French-style door not only an eyesore but can also pose a security risk. Replacing glass in a French door can be accomplished in a couple of steps and is typically cheaper than replacing the entire door panel. Most homeowners can perform this task by themselves, however professional assistance is available for those who require specific tools or know-how.
Start by taking out any cracked or broken fragments of the frame. Wear safety glasses and gloves to stop glass shards from entering your eyes or onto your face. Then, clean the glass pane opening to get rid of any remaining caulking or putty that was used to keep the old pane in place.
The next step is to remove any trim or molding that held the glass in place. This isn't easy because it may require some effort to pry the molding out. Wearing protective equipment and having a person help you with the prying is an ideal idea. Label the items are being removed so that they can be returned to their original positions.
Once the molding has been removed, you can begin installing the new pane of glass. Visit a glass store and measure the opening of the glass. You should get the safety glass for your French door, since it will not break easily if they break again.
When you are ready to place your glass piece into the opening, be sure that it is aligned properly. Then, apply a fine bead of clear silicone caulk around the glass's edge.
After the caulk has dried after drying, you can put in a new molding. If the original nails didn't penetrate the molding, you can put new wire nails into the holes left by the old nails. To stop the nails from cutting the molding, you should drill the holes prior to drilling them. A well-stocked hardware store has tiny bits that you can use to drill the holes.
How to cut a New Pane Of Glass
Before purchasing a new piece of glass, double-check that the frame's spacing and the edges of the window are even. You may have to adjust spring clips or metal triangulars that hold it in place if there are gaps. You should also make sure that your new pane is appropriate for the opening. If it's too big, you may experience leaks and other issues.
The first step is preparing the work surface. Scrape the old compound off both sides of the frame using a putty blade reveal the bare wood. If the rabbets of the frame are too rough to smooth with a putty blade, lightly sand the edges and apply an exterior primer. This will stop the new glass from absorbing moisture from the wood, and will reduce its life.
After the frame is clean and prepped, warm a handful of putty by kneading it until soft and malleable. Apply a thin layer with the putty blade to the inside corner rabbets to create a bed that the glass can rest. Repeat the process for the other exposed edges.
When the putty is dry and the putty is removed, you can remove any remaining glazing points that are stuck in the grooves of the sash. Wear safety glasses prior to attempting to remove the points to ensure that you are safe from shards of glass. Heat guns on low settings can be used to gently warm the metal and loosen it so that you can remove it with pliers.
When the frame and glass are in place, test it by sliding it into the frame. Adjust the glass as needed before you secure it with spring clips or triangulars made of metal. Check that the gap between the frame and glass is uniform on all sides. Examine the movement of the window sash, and make sure that the new glass does not interfere with the opening or closing. Contact a restoration expert should you encounter any issues during the installation. They can assist you to repair and maintain your home's historic features.
Install the Pane of Glass
Test-fit the glass pane to ensure it fits snugly before installing it. Find the width and the height of the window's opening, measuring to the edges of the L-channels. Subtract 1/8 inch from each measurement to determine the size of glass you should purchase. It will be much easier to install the pane by reducing it slightly. This will also allow for seasonal expansion and contracting of the wood frame. You can take your measurements to a hardware store or the home centre and they will cut a piece of glass for you. Alternatively, replacement french doors can cut the glass yourself if you happen to have a large sheet of stock glass.
After the old pane of glass has been removed, you must clean the window sash grooves and remove any metal glazing points that held the old pane in place. A paint scraper that is a pull type or a chisel can be used to accomplish this job. If the grooves contain lots of putty that has been hardened, you can gradually soften it by using a heating gun. Be careful to cover surrounding windows and moldings with aluminum foil to protect them from the heat.
Scrape and sand the rabbets on which the glass sits, brushing an exterior primer on them to help prevent the putty from drawing out its natural oils and shortening its life. You should also clean the sash to remove any dirt and dust from the grooves.
Knead a tiny amount of putty until it is soft and warm Then press it into the rabbets where the glass will go. The appearance of the glass isn't crucial at this point. Put the new pane into the rabbets, then move it around and apply consistent pressure with your fingers to make sure it's properly seated.
Fill any holes in the frame with silicone caulk. Then install the new glass. If the frame has other mechanisms for fastening like L-channels for example, make use of a hammer to pull them out from the sash grooves. Examine the frame for glass fragments that may have broken free during removal, and then remove them prior to continuing. To keep pests and water from entering the house Apply a clear silicone caulk to the frame's bottom edge where it meets the floor.
