Recently the issue of insulin resistance (IR) has caught attention.SubjectsA group of overweight/obese PCOS patients (n = 30) have been evaluated before and after 3 months of daily integrative administration of d-chiro inositol (DCI) (500 mg) and alpha lipoic acid (ALA) (300 mg).MethodsHormonal and metabolic profiles, oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) for glucose, insulin and C-peptide response were performed in baseline conditions and after DCI plus ALA treatment. Hepatic Insulin Extraction (HIE) index was computed along the OGTT to evaluate the liver ability in degrading insulin.ResultsThe treatment decreased LH, Androstenedione (A), insulin plasma levels, BMI, HOMA index, AST and ALT. Considering patients for the presence (n = 17) or absence of familial diabetes (n = 13), the greatest improvements occurred in the former patients. Insulin response to OGTT was greatly reduced after the treatment interval in PCOS with familial diabetes. HIE computation disclosed that in presence of familial diabetes liver degradation of insulin is reduced thus leaving a higher amount of circulating insulin. DCI plus ALA administration decreased AST and ALT and restored hepatic insulin clearance since HIE profile was improved.ConclusionOur study demonstrates that in overweight/obese PCOS the predisposition to familial diabetes triggers IR not only through the endogenous impaired DCI and ALA synthesis but also through a reduced hepatic clearance of insulin. DCI plus ALA administration positively improved hormonal, metabolic profiles as well as liver function.

To test the variables of Theory of Reasoned Action to explain the behavior of tongue cleaning among college going students of Udaipur city, Rajasthan, India.

A descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted amongst 756 college going students of Udaipur city, India using an online self-administered structured questionnaire which was designed based on our study objectives. Logistic regression analysis and structural equation modelling (SEM) were employed for statistical analysis. Confidence level and level of significance were set at 95% and 5% respectively.

Logistic regression analysis showed that with one unit increase in subjective norm, the tongue cleaning behavior odds increased significantly by 1.124. Also, the tongue cleaning behavior odds was 1.77 times significantly greater among those brushing their teeth twice a day than those brushing once a day. Structural Equation modelling also evidenced the significant direct effect of subjective norm on tongue cleaning behavior (β = 0.2, p≤0.05).

Our results highlighted the importance of subjective norms in espousing tongue cleaning preventive behaviour habit. It is thus recommended to highpoint the role of significant others in changing tongue cleaning behaviour.

To study the effect of lying down posture while using smartphone among school children in Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand.

This survey study employed a Descriptive Cross-Sectional Design. The population was Grade 1-6 students studying in a primary school in Nakhon Si Thammarat. There were 122 samples selected based on the Volunteer Sampling Technique under the written consent of the students' guardians. The research instruments employed in this study were 1) Questionnaire adapted from Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire asking musculoskeletal symptoms, 2) Posture Assessment using Kinovea Software to measure the angles of the muscle and postures during photo and video shooting of the smartphone users. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics while Chi-square and Mann-Whitney recommended that guardians or relevant sectors have greater attention to smartphone usage among children to prevent their long-term musculoskeletal problems.Ornamentation, such as the showy plumage of birds, is widespread among female vertebrates, yet the evolutionary pressures shaping female ornamentation remain uncertain. In part this is due to a poor understanding of the mechanistic route to ornamentation in females. To address this issue, we evaluated the evolutionary history of ornament expression in a tropical passerine bird, the White-shouldered Fairywren, whose females, but not males, strongly vary between populations in occurrence of ornamented black-and-white plumage. We first use phylogenomic analysis to demonstrate that female ornamentation is derived and that female ornamentation evolves independently of changes in male plumage. We then use exogenous testosterone in a field experiment to induce partial ornamentation in naturally unornamented females. By sequencing the transcriptome of experimentally induced ornamented and natural feathers, we identify genes expressed during ornament production and evaluate the degree to which female ornamentation in this system is associated with elevated testosterone, as is common in males. We reveal that some ornamentation in females is linked to testosterone and that sexes differ in ornament-linked gene expression. Lastly, using genomic outlier analysis we identify a candidate melanogenesis gene that lies in a region of high genomic divergence among populations that is also differentially expressed in feather follicles of different female plumages. Taken together, these findings are consistent with sex-specific selection favoring the evolution of female ornaments and demonstrate a key role for testosterone in generating population divergence in female ornamentation through gene regulation. Objective To explore the course of patients with school absenteeism 1.5-3 years after their initial evaluation, including symptoms, school attendance, psychosocial functioning, and help-seeking behavior. Method Of the 237 patients from specialized psychiatric units for youths displaying school absenteeism, we successfully contacted 108 of them 1.5-3 years after initial admission. The way the reaction takes place is unclear, and a rational explanation on how the electronic activity drives the HAT seems to be necessary. In this work, we answer this question using the reaction electronic flux (REF), a DFT-based descriptor of electronic activity. Two reaction mechanisms will be analyzed using the REF's decomposition in polarization and electron transfer effects. Results show that both mechanisms proceed as follows (1) polarization effects initiate the reactions producing structural distortions; (2) electron transfer processes take over near the transition states, triggering specific chemical events such as bond forming and breaking which are responsible to push the reactions toward the products; (3) after passing the transition state, polarization shows up again and drives the relaxation process toward the product. Similar polarization effects were observed in both reactions, but they present an opposite behavior of the electronic transfer flux disclosing the fact that electron transfer phenomena govern the reaction mechanisms.With the global pandemic of the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19), a safe, effective, and affordable mass-produced vaccine remains the current focus of research. Herein, we designed an adjuvant-protein conjugate vaccine candidate, in which the TLR7 agonist (TLR7a) was conjugated to S1 subunit of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein, and systematically compared the effect of different numbers of built-in TLR7a on the immune activity for the first time.
