Quinoa has a high nutraceutical potential because of the presence of secondary metabolites called saponins, which have industrial and medicinal uses and protect against attacks by pathogens. These compounds are found especially in the seed coat and give the grain a bitter taste; therefore, they must be eliminated before consumption. Despite the potential use in Colombia, there are few studies aimed at quantifying this metabolite. Therefore, the objective of this research was to evaluate two extraction methodologies (physical and chemical) and two methods for quantifying saponins in five quinoa genotypes grown in Colombia. The most efficient extraction method was the physical method. The saponin contents of the five genotypes were variable. The cluster analysis differentiated the genotypes into two groups low saponin content (0.18%). Identifying more efficient methodologies for extracting and quantifying saponins will allow a better characterization of the germplasm and selection of genotypes with desirable characteristics for both consumption and industrial use.
People with pulmonary hypertension (PH) are at an increased risk of experiencing anxiety disorders. This study developed and tested the acceptability, feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of a cognitive behavioural self-help intervention for anxiety in adults with PH using a pilot randomised control trial design.

Individuals with PH recruited from pulmonary hypertension associations were randomised to either receive a newly developed self-help intervention (n=37) or a wait-list condition (n=40). Acceptability was explored using mixed-methods questionnaires. A 2×3 repeated-measures analysis of variance was used to explore anxiety (GAD-7), depression (PHQ-9), health-related quality of life (emPHAsis-10), dyspnoea (D-12), self-mastery (Self-Mastery Scale) and mood-related cognitions and behaviours (CBP-Q) at baseline, post-intervention and 1-month follow up. A mediation analysis was performed to examine potential mechanisms of change.

Dropout was low at 15.6%. All participants would recommend the inte during the pandemic. Findings add to the growing evidence supporting the use of psychological therapies, including cognitive behavioural therapy, in this clinical group.
Nutritional status impacts quality of life and prognosis of patients with respiratory diseases, including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). However, there is a lack of studies performing an extensive nutritional assessment of IPF patients. This study aimed to investigate the nutritional status and to identify nutritional phenotypes in a cohort of IPF patients at diagnosis.

Patients underwent a thorough pulmonary and nutritional evaluation including questionnaires on nutritional status, and physical activity, anthropometry, body impedance, dynamometry, 4-m gait speed and blood tests.

90 IPF patients (78.9% males, mean age 72.7 years) were enrolled. The majority of patients were classified as Gender-Age-Physiology Index stage 2 (47, 52.2%) with an inactive lifestyle according to International Physical Activity Questionnaire score (39, 43.3%), and had mean forced vital capacity and diffusing capacity for carbon monoxide 86.5% and 54.2%, respectively. In regards to nutritional phenotypes, the majority of patients were normally nourished (67.8%, 95% CI 58.6-77.7%), followed by non-sarcopenic obese (25.3%, 95% CI 16.1-35.2%), sarcopenic (4.6%, 95% CI 0.0-14.5%) and sarcopenic obese (2.3%, 95% CI 0.0-12.2%). Among the normally nourished, 49.2% showed early signs of nutritional and physical performance alterations, including body mass index ≥30 kg·m
in 4.3%, history of weight loss ≥5% in 11.9%, and reduction of gait speed and hand grip strength in 11.9% and 35.6%, respectively. Low vitamin D values were observed in 56.3% of cases.

Adding information on mortality as well as on newly published studies on a previous database, we performed a meta-regression. Among the 56 included studies representing 14 166 patients, an annual decrease in mortality rates of 6.1% (-0.6%, 12.6%) (p=0.073) was observed. Consistent results were obtained in subgroups as well as when adjusting for potential confounders. The correlation between exacerbation rate and mortality rate was positive but weak as well as insignificant. In summary, analysis of randomised controlled trials in COPD patients showed a decrease in mortality in the placebo arms over the last two decades. Bronchiectasis is an increasingly common chronic inflammatory airway disease. We evaluated secondary safety outcomes in a comparative effectiveness study of chronic inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) and macrolide monotherapy in bronchiectasis patients.

We conducted a retrospective study using US Medicare Parts A, B and D (but not C) 2006-2014 datasets. Among those with a pulmonologist-associated bronchiectasis claim (ICD-9-CM 494.0 or 494.1), without cystic fibrosis, we identified the first new use of either chronic (>28 days) ICS or macrolide monotherapy. For each drug exposure, we calculated crude incidence rates of the secondary safety outcomes arrhythmia, myocardial infarction, sensorineural hearing loss, hip fracture and opportunistic infections. We calculated a propensity score (PS) for ICS use using demographic, clinical and utilisation characteristics and compared risks of macrolides
ICS for each outcome using PS decile-adjusted Cox regression models.

Of 285 043 Medicare patients with bronchiectasis, we identified 6500 (2%) macrolide and 83 589 (29%) ICS new users. Key covariates were balanced across exposure groups within decile. Myocardial infarction, hip fracture and opportunistic infection were not significantly associated with treatment. Macrolides were associated with a decreased risk of arrhythmia (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) 0.87, 95% CI 0.80-0.94) and an increased risk of sensorineural hearing loss (aHR 1.38, 95% CI 1.56-1.22) compared to ICS.

ProSs serve broad memberships, define disciplinary norms and culture, and inform accrediting bodies and thus provide critical levers for systems change. STEM ProSs could be instrumental in achieving the DEI system reform necessary to optimize engagement of all STEM talent, leveraging disciplinary excellence resulting from diverse teams. Inclusive STEM system reform requires that underlying "mental models" be examined. The Inclusive Professional Framework for Societies (IPF Societies) is an interrelated set of strategies that can help ProSs change leaders (i.e., "boundary spanners") and organizations identify and address mental models hindering DEI reform. The IPF Societies uses four "I's"-Identity awareness and Intercultural mindfulness (i.e., equity mindset) upon which inclusive relationships and Influential DEI actions are scaffolded. We discuss how the IPF Societies complements existing DEI tools (e.g., Women in Engineering ProActive Network's Framework for Promoting Gender Equity within Organization; Amplifying the Alliance to Catalyze Change for Equity in STEM Success' Equity Environmental Scan Tool). We explain how the IPF Societies can be applied to existing ProS policy and practice associated with common ProS functions (e.g., leadership, membership, conferences, awards, and professional development). The next steps are to pilot the IPF Societies with a cohort of STEM ProSs. Ultimately, the IPF Societies has potential to promote more efficient, effective, and lasting DEI organizational transformation and contribute to inclusive STEM disciplinary excellence.We aimed to study the effects of dietary Bacillus coagulans (B. coagulans) and Lactobacillus plantarum (L. EKI-785 nmr plantarum) on broilers challenged by Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide (LPS). One-day-old Cobb 500 chicks (360) were divided randomly into three treatment groups for 47 days no supplementation (control, CON), B. coagulans supplementation (BC), and L. plantarum supplementation (LA). Broilers were routinely fed for 42 days and intraperitoneally injected with 500 μg LPS per kg body weight at 43, 45, and 47 days of age, respectively. Samples were collected 3 h after the last injection. At 1-21 days of age, the ADG in the BC and LA groups was higher than that in the CON group, and the feed to gain ratio (F/G) in the BC group was significantly decreased (P less then 0.05). Compared with that in CON birds, the ADG was increased and the F/G was decreased in the BC and LA birds at 22-42 and 1-42 days of age, respectively (P less then 0.05). The results showed dietary 4 mg/kg CAP supplementation decreased (P less then 0.05) the feed to gain ratio (F/G) in the grower phase (22-42 d) and overall (1-42 d) compared with the control group, and 2 mg/kg CAP group also decreased (P less then 0.05) the F/G from 1 to 42 d. Dietary 4 mg/kg CAP supplementation decreased (P less then 0.05) the drip loss at 48 h and the pH24h of breast muscles relative to the control group.
