to study the effects on vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain using both video head impulse test (vHIT) and Suppression Head impulse test (SHIMP) either using the outward or the inwards head impulse.

Twenty healthy subjects were enrolled in the study. They were examined using otometric vHIT and SHIMP test lateral plane using the lateral outwards head impulse ten impulses for each side and the inwards head impulse ten impulses for each side. The VOR gain resulting from the outwards versus inwards head impulse during the vHIT and SHIMP were statistically compared.

Twenty healthy subjects, 10 Males and 10 females with a mean age 35±11.7. Paired t- test showed no statistical significance difference in the mean VOR gain of right lateral semicircular canal (1.1±.12) using outwards versus (1.03 ± .22) inwards head impulses, nor for the left lateral semicircular canal mean VOR gain (1.1 ± .22) using outwards head impulse (1.1 ± .3) for inwards head impulse in vHIT. Paired t- test showed no statistical significance difference in the mean VOR gain of right lateral semicircular canal (0.96 ± 0.2)using outwards versus (1.04 ± 0.2) inwards head impulses, nor for the left lateral semicircular canal mean VOR gain (0.98 ± 0.25) using outwards head impulse (1.1 ± 0.28) for inwards head impulse in SHIMP test. No statistical significant difference was found between the VOR gain resulting from the right versus the left semicircular canal.

Congenital nasal pyriform aperture stenosis (CNPAS) is an uncommon malformation and a rare cause of respiratory distress in neonates that may require early surgical intervention. The aim of this study is to report our experience in patients operated for CNPAS and present characteristics of this population.

A retrospective, analytical cohort study was conducted of patients who underwent surgical treatment for CNPAS in the Hospital de Pediatría Garrahan from May 2008 to May 2018.

Nineteen patients underwent surgical treatment; 47.36% had some associated genetic syndrome. The surgical approach was sublabial. Follow-up was more than 45 days in 14 patients, 9 did not require additional treatment, and the remaining 5 required further surgical and/or medical treatment. The objective of this study is to assess the existence of differences in the epidemiological characteristics and prognosis of patients with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) who smoke cigars.

We carried out a retrospective study of a cohort of 4,500 patients with HNSCC treated during the period 1985-2017.

The proportion of cigar smokers was 2.4%, compared with 88.3% of cigarette smokers and 9.3% of non-smokers. There was an increase in the proportion of cigar smokers throughout the study period. With respect to cigarette smokers, cigar smokers had a higher proportion of male patients, a higher average age at diagnosis, and they had a higher frequency of tumours located in the oral cavity and hypopharynx. The results of a univariate analysis showed that the disease-specific survival of cigar smokers was lower than that of the other patients. Five-year disease-specific survival of cigar smokers was 60.9%, compared to 69.0% for non-smokers, 72.8% for smokers of less than 20 cigarettes/day, and 67.2% for smokers of more than 20 cigarettes/day. There were differences in the pattern of survival depending on tobacco consumption based on the location of the primary tumour.

While surgical intervention was frequently and mostly unsuccessfully practiced during the first half of the last century, the 1960s were witness to the birth and gradual acceptance of non-operative management of these injuries. In 2000, the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) Trauma Committee disseminated evidenced-based guidelines to help guide the non-operative management of pediatric blunt solid organ injury. The guidelines significantly contributed to conformity in the management of these patients. Since then, a number of well-designed studies have questioned the strict categorization of these injuries and have led to a renewed reliance on clinical signs of the patient's hemodynamic status. In 2019, APSA introduced an updated set of guidelines emphasizing the use of physiologic status rather than radiologic grade as a driver of clinical decision making for these injuries. This review will focus on liver injuries, in particular blunt injury, as this mechanism is by far the most commonly seen in children.
