This beneficial effect may, in part, be due to suppression of hepatic stellate cell activation.Objectives This study aimed to determine risk factors for frailty and lifestyle-related diseases impacting the incidence of loss of independence among Japanese community-dwelling older adults, and to measure the magnitude of these associations.Methods We conducted an 8.1-year prospective study involving 1,214 residents of the town of Kusatsu, aged 65 years and over, who were initially free of disability and underwent the comprehensive geriatric assessment between 2002 and 2011. 4-HNE mw Loss of independence was defined as the incidence of disability or having died before the occurrence of disability was certified by the Long-Term Care Insurance program in Japan. Frailty was defined as the presence of three or more of the following criteria Weighfor loss of independence and greater PAFs for prefrailty (18%), frailty (13%), and smoking (11%).Conclusions Loss of independence among Japanese community-dwelling older adults who underwent screening examinations was largely attributed to frailty and prefrailty. Our findings suggest that the screening and the intervention for frailty and lifestyle-related diseases in the early stages of old age might be beneficial in prolonging healthy life expectancy of Japanese community-dwelling older adults.Objectives This study aimed to develop the Family Empowerment Scale for Parents with Toddlers (FES-P) and to examine its validity and reliability.Methods A draft version of the scale was prepared based on a literature review and interviews with experts. Next, we conducted a web-based structured questionnaire survey of 800 parents (400 men and 400 women) with children aged 1 to 3 years, across Japan, and then verified the validity and reliability of the FES-P. The repeatability and stability by the retest method were examined as well.Results We analyzed the data of the 825 individuals (412 men and 413 women) who answered the survey. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed that the optimum solution that can interpret each factor could be obtained with five sub-factors and 26 question items. We confirmed that the five sub-factors were "relationships within the family," "sense of efficacy with regard to parenting," "relationships with the community," "sense of achievement as a parent," and "recognitisted of items related to individual empowerment, "relationships within the family" and "relationships with the community" consisted of items related to relationships with others, and "recognition and combined use of services" consisted of items related to social resources.Elastic properties of Aryl-Ketone-Polymer (UAKP) and tensile bond strength (TBS) to denture resin (PalaXpress) were tested. Indentation modulus (EIT) and indentation hardness (HIT) were measured via Martens hardness (n=10 specimens) with 4.2±0.6 kN/mm2 and 261±8 N/mm2 respectively. TBS was tested in dependence of different adhesives (visio.link (VL), Adhese Universal (AU), All-Bond Universal (ABU), CLEARFIL UNIVERSAL BOND (CUB), G-Premio BOND (GPB), iBOND Universal (IBU), ONE COAT 7 UNIVERSAL (OCU), Scotchbond Universal (SBU) and without adhesive (CG), n=18/group) and the application of opaquer (n=9/group) after thermocycling (5°C/55°C, 10,000×). TBS was affected by the adhesive (η (P2=0.715, p less then 0.001) followed by the opaquer (ηP2=0.335, p less then 0.001). VL and CG showed highest TBS followed by AU and ABU. IBU and GPB resulted in lowest TBS. Opaquer increased TBS for all adhesives (p less then 0.05), except VL and CG (p less then 0.258). Elastic properties are well-suited for the indication of removable partial dentures. Bonding to denture resin is no limiting factor.We investigated the surface modification of orthodontic stainless steel wire using electrophoretic deposition (EPD) of bioactive glass (BG). BG coatings were characterized by spectrophotometry, three-dimensional (3D) focal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The mechanical properties of the BG-coated wires were estimated nanoindentation, three-point bending and drawing friction tests. BG-coated specimens prepared at higher voltage showed higher values for both reflectance and L* compared to those prepared at lower voltage. Specimens coated at higher voltage had significantly lower surface roughness than those coated at lower voltage, and their BG layers had higher hardness and elastic modulus values. In the three-point bending test, BG-coated wires produced significantly lower elastic modulus than non-coated wires. Most BG-coated specimens produced similar frictional forces to those produced by non-coated specimens. The surface modification technique applying EPD and BG coating to orthodontic stainless steel wire could be used to develop new esthetical orthodontic wire.The experimental bioactive sealers were synthesized by incorporating fluoridated-nano-bioactive glass (F-nBG; 2.5 and 5wt%) in AH Plus® (Dentsply DeTrey, Konstanz, Germany) sealer and denoted as AH-FBG2.5 and AH-FBG5, respectively. Structural pattern, setting time, flowability, and water sorption analysis were performed. The fluoride release behavior was evaluated periodically over the course of 40 days using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. For sealing ability, post-extraction single-rooted teeth were obturated with sealers. The percentage of voids and sealing ability were evaluated periodically using micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) followed by push-out bond strength. The Fourier transform infrared spectra showed a change in peak height with an increase in the concentration of fillers. The setting time, flowability, and water sorption of experimental groups were within the acceptable clinical range. The fluoride release, sealing ability, and bond strength of experimental sealers were significantly high. The experimental sealers have potential to overcome sealing ability issues of sealers.BioUnion filler incorporated into restorative/coating materials is a new bio-functional glass powder. The most unique function of BioUnion filler is its ability to release Zn2+ in acidic environments. In this study, the ion release profile of BioUnion filler under acidic conditions and its antibacterial effects against Streptococcus mutans were evaluated. The concentrations of Zn2+ released from BioUnion fillers into acetic acids were greater than those released into water. S. mutans inhibition by BioUnion fillers was greater with sucrose than without sucrose, reflecting a decrease in suspension pH in response to the addition of sucrose. Exposure to acids increased Zn2+ release from BioUnion fillers, and the fillers after repeated exposure to acids demonstrated inhibitory effects against S. mutans. These findings suggest that BioUnion filler accelerated the release of Zn2+ under acidic conditions, which induced bactericidal/inhibitory effects against S. mutans.To study the effect of central retainer shape and abduction angle during tooth preparation on stress distribution in endocrown-restored molars via finite element (FE) analysis, we constructed five FE models with different central retainer shapes and abduction angles. Under an oblique load, the distributions of maximum tensile stress in cervical dentin around the endocrown and on the cement layer, as well as maximum shear stress on the cement layer, were more balanced in the FE model in which the central retainer shape was generated based on the anatomical form of the pulp chamber. Moreover, there were no differences in stress distributions among FE models with different abduction angles. Therefore, the shape of the central retainer should be designed on the basis of the anatomical form of the pulp chamber; abduction angle during tooth preparation does not influence the repair effect of endocrown-restored mandibular molars.This study assessed the impact of surface treatments and repair resin reinforcement with zirconium oxide nano-particles (nano-ZrO2) on flexural strength (FS) of repaired denture base. A total of 320 heat-polymerized acrylic resin specimens were prepared and sectioned creating 2-mm gap. According to repair surface treatment, specimens were distributed into four groups I) methyl methacrylate (M); II) alumina-blasted (AB); III) AB+silane coupling agent (SC); and IV) AB+methacrylate based composite bonding agent (MA). Groups were subdivided into 4 (n=20) according to nano-ZrO2 concentration (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5 wt%). Half the specimens were thermo-cycled before testing. FS was determined by three-point bending test. Statistical analysis was done using ANOVA and Tukey-Kramer multiple comparison tests, with α=0.05. Alumina-blasting+(SC) or (MA) significantly increased FS of repaired specimens compared to control (p less then 0.05). All surface-treated specimens combined with nano-ZrO2 reinforced repair resin significantly increased FS.BACKGROUND In non-diabetic patients with acute coronary syndrome, stress hyperglycemia occasionally occurs and is related to their mortality. link2 Whether transient elevation of glucose affects arrhythmia susceptibility in non-diabetic hearts with non-uniform contraction was examined.Methods and ResultsForce, intracellular Ca2+([Ca2+]i), and membrane potential were measured in trabeculae from rat hearts. Non-uniform contraction was produced by a jet of paralyzing solution. Ca2+waves and arrhythmias were induced by electrical stimulation (2.0 mmol/L [Ca2+]o). The activity of Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinaseII (CaMKII) was measured. An elevation of glucose from 150 to 400 mg/dL increased the velocity of Ca2+waves and the number of spontaneous action potentials triggered by electrical stimulation. link3 Besides, the elevation of glucose increased the CaMKII activity. In the presence of 1 μmol/L KN-93, the elevation of glucose did not increase the velocity of Ca2+waves and the number of triggered action potentials. In addition, in the presence of 1 μmol/L autocamtide-2 related inhibitory peptide or 50 μmol/L diazo-5-oxonorleucine, the elevation of glucose did not increase the number of triggered action potentials. Furthermore, the elevation of glucose by adding L-glucose did not increase their number. CONCLUSIONS In non-diabetic hearts with non-uniform contraction, transient elevation of glucose increases the velocity of Ca2+waves by activating CaMKII,probably through glycosylation with O-linked β-N-acetylglucosamine, thereby increasing arrhythmia susceptibility.BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of transdermal β-blocker patches, which offer stable blood concentration and easy availability during operation, for prevention of perioperative myocardial injury (PMI) in high-risk patients.Methods and ResultsIn this randomized controlled trial, patients aged >60 years with hypertension and high revised cardiac risk index (≥2) undergoing non-cardiac surgery were randomly assigned to a bisoprolol patch or control group. Primary efficacy outcome was incidence of PMI, defined as postoperative high-sensitivity cardiac troponin T (hs-cTnT) >0.014ng/mL and relative hs-cTnT change ≥20%. Secondary efficacy outcomes were number of cardiovascular events and 30-day mortality. From November 2014 to February 2019, 240 patients from 5 hospitals were enrolled in this study. The incidence of PMI was 35.7% in the bisoprolol patch group and 44.5% in the control group (P=0.18). Incidence of major adverse cardiac events including non-critical myocardial infarction, strokes, decompensated heart failure and tachyarrhythmia was similar between the 2 groups.
