Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections are still prevalent among schoolchildren in the Philippines. We evaluated the risk factors associated with STH and the relationship between STH and nutritional indices among schoolchildren aged 9-10 years in Laguna province, the Philippines.

We used the baseline data from 40 schools enrolled in a randomised controlled trial of the Magic Glasses Philippines health education package. Data on demographic and socio-economic variables, and STH related knowledge, attitudes and practices, were obtained through a questionnaire. Stool samples were collected and assessed for STH egg presence using the Kato-Katz technique. Haemoglobin levels and height and weight of study participants were also determined. The generalized estimating equations approach was used to construct logistic regression models to assess STH-associated risk factors, and the association between any STH infection and anaemia, child stunting, wasting and being underweight. The trial is registered with thels Registry (ACTRN12616000508471).Malnutrition is a pronounced public health issue which often seems underestimated in the older people living with HIV (PLWH) virus infection. PLWH are highly vulnerable to nutritional problems resulting from agingrelated deterioration, disease itself, and adverse effects of antiretroviral therapy (ART). The comprehensive nutritional assessments are necessary to perform routinely in this population to monitor and provide appropriate interventions to reduce comorbid conditions. In this review, we focus on the untoward impacts of malnutrition and nutritional assessments on the morbidity and mortality in the older PLWH. Some predictive factors of nutritional status in this group of patients are discussed. We propose the important components for nutrition assessment tool for older PLWH on ART. Highlighted issue is the need for developing uniform standardized tools for the early diagnosis of malnutrition in this population. Applications of the nutritional assessments, proper nutritional interventions, and regular monitoring of nutritional status in older PLWH liv-ing in every clinical setting may help the patients get better well-being.BACKGROUND Persistent polyclonal B cell lymphocytosis (PPBL) is a benign clinical condition, which is characterized by persistent absolute polyclonal B lymphocytosis (>4.0 K/μL), with the presence of circulating binucleated lymphocytes on the peripheral blood smear and an extra 3 chromosome long arm i(3q) in most cases. Immunophenotype reveals the polyclonal population of B cell lymphocytes with expression of CD19, CD20, and CD22 antigens, and kappa and lambda immunoglobulin light chains. Patients are mostly asymptomatic. Although PPBL has a benign clinical course and does not affect the survival expectancy of most patients, pregnancy seems to be extremely rare in these patients, as only 1 case reported so far. Although the real role of immunologic disorders, possibly PPBL, in recurrent pregnancy losses remains unclear, the rarity of successful pregnancy in PPBL patients could be attributed to the possible association of PPBL with infertility or recurrent miscarriages. CASE REPORT In the present study we present the second published case of a woman with a typical PPBL and recurrent pregnancy loss with a successful pregnancy outcome. Close clinical and laboratory monitoring in combination with the administration of thromboprophylaxis and the induction of mild immunosuppression with low-dose prednisolone may have contributed to the successful outcome of the pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion and taking all these findings into consideration, pregnancy in patients with PPBL seems to be extremely rare and the contribution of PPBL to the 2 previous miscarriages in our case could not be excluded.
Since the first documented case of coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19), the greater New York City area quickly became the epicenter of the global pandemic, with over 500,000 cases and 50,000 deaths. This unprecedented crisis affected all aspects of health care, including plastic surgery residency training. The purpose of this study was to understand the specific impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on plastic surgery residencies.

A survey of all plastic surgery residency training programs in the greater New York City area was conducted. The impact to training during the peak months of infection (March and April of 2020) was evaluated using resident education as measured by case numbers, need for redeployment, and staff wellness as primary outcome variables.

A total of 11 programs were identified in the region, and seven programs completed the survey, with a response rate 63.6 percent. When comparing productivity in March and April of 2019 to March and April of 2020, a total decrease in surgical volume of s on what to expect and how they can try and prepare for future public health crises.
The Physician Payments Sunshine Act of 2010 mandated that all industry payments to physicians be publicly disclosed. To date, industry support of plastic surgeons has not been longitudinally characterized. The authors seek to evaluate payment trends from 2013 to 2018 and characteristics across plastic surgeon recipients of industry payments.

The authors cross-referenced those in the 2019 American Society of Plastic Surgeons member database with Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Open Payments database physician profile identification number indicating industry funds received within the study period. WAY-262611 We categorized surgeons by years since American Board of Plastic Surgery certification, practice region, and academic affiliation.

A sum of $89,436,100 (247,614 payments) was received by 3855 plastic surgeons. The top 1 percent of earners (n = 39) by dollar amount received 52 percent of industry dollars to plastic surgeons; of these, nine (23 percent) were academic. Overall, 428 surgeons (11 percent) were academic and received comparable dollar amounts from industry as their nonacademic counterparts. Neither geographic location nor years of experience were independent predictors of payments received. The majority of individual transactions were for food and beverage, whereas the majority of industry dollars were typically for royalties or license.

Over half of all industry dollars transferred went to just 1 percent of American Society of Plastic Surgeons members receiving payments between 2013 and 2018. Considerable heterogeneity exists when accounting for payment subcategories.

The Open Payments database was created to increase transparency of industry payment relationships within medicine. The current literature often examines only 1 year of the database. In this study, the authors use 5 years of data to show trends among industry payments to plastic surgeons from 2014 to 2018. In addition, the authors lay out the basics of conflict-of-interest reporting for the new plastic surgeon. Finally, the authors suggest an algorithm for the responsible management of industry relationships.

This study analyzed nonresearch payments made to plastic surgeons from January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2018. Descriptive statistics were calculated using R Statistical Software and visualized using Tableau.

A total of 304,663 payments totaling $140,889,747 were made to 8148 plastic surgeons; 41 percent ($58.28 million) was paid to 50 plastic surgeons in the form of royalty or license payments. With royalties excluded, average and median payments were $276 and $25. The average yearly total per physician was $2028. Of the 14 payment categories, 95 percent of the total amount paid was attributable payments in one of six categories. link2 Seven hundred thirty companies reported payments to plastic surgeons from 2014 to 2018; 15 companies (2 percent) were responsible for 80 percent ($66.34 million) of the total sum paid. Allergan was responsible for $24.45 million (29.6 percent) of this amount.

Although discussions on the proper management of industry relationships continue to evolve, the data in this study illustrate the importance of managing industry relationships. The simple guidelines suggested create a basis for managing industry relationships in the career of the everyday plastic surgeon.

After studying this article, the participant should be able to 1. Understand the indications and management options for secondary flexor tendon reconstruction, including tenolysis, tendon grafting, and tendon transfers. 2. Understand the reconstructive options for pulley reconstruction. 3. Understand the options for management of isolated flexor digitorum profundus injuries.

Despite current advances in flexor tendon repair, complications can still occur following surgery. This article presents the spectrum of treatment options for secondary flexor tendon reconstruction ranging from tenolysis to one- and two-stage tendon grafting, and tendon transfers. In addition, an overview of pulley reconstruction and the treatment of isolated flexor digitorum profundus injuries are discussed. A management algorithm for secondary flexor tendon reconstruction is provided.

Technology is advancing in benefit to solving complex problems. Preoperative planning is essential in any reconstructive process given the importance of achieving good results. New technologies facilitate the process to anticipate intraoperative findings. Virtual surgical planning has contributed in the evolution of craniomaxillofacial surgery. However, limited reports have been published regarding its usefulness in extremity reconstruction. The aim of this study was to push the limits and evaluate the use of virtual surgical planning with three-dimensional images for reconstruction of complex extremity defects using a free, open-source software. Patient candidates for upper or lower extremity microsurgical reconstruction with multiple defects or defects requiring reconstruction of various tissue components were included. Computed tomography angiography images were analyzed for virtual surgical planning using Horos software (Horos, Annapolis, Md.). Two upper and eight lower extremities were reconstructed with free flaps using virtual surgical planning; six cases had multiple defects, and four cases underwent different tissue components reconstruction. The postoperative period was uneventful, and there was no flap failure. A didactic video of the process and examples of some cases are presented. Virtual surgical planning is a powerful planning method, and the authors propose its use in complex extremity defects reconstruction.
