Middle meatal synechiae formation after endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) for chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) leads to higher rates of revision surgery. We aimed to determine if there are different rates of postoperative synechiae following ESS for CRS between patients who received a nonabsorbable spacer (NAS) placed in the ethmoid cavity versus patients who had a steroid-impregnated absorbable spacer (AS) placed at the middle meatal entry.

We conducted a retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent ESS for CRS at a single tertiary referral center from October 2009 to October 2013. We collected data on synechiae formation between the middle turbinate and lateral nasal wall within 1 month of surgery and postoperative epistaxis.

One hundred forty-six patients with 252 nasal cavities (52.0%) received steroid-impregnated AS, and 128 patients with 233 nasal cavities (48.0%) received NAS. Synechiae formation occurred in 2.0% of cavities with AS and 5.6% of cavities with NAS, but this difference was not statistically significant (OR = 0.34, P = .052). One patient in each cohort had significant postoperative epistaxis requiring additional nasal packing (P > .99).

Steroid-impregnated absorbable spacers had statistically insignificant reduction in postoperative synechiae formation when compared to nonabsorbable spacers. Low rates of postoperative epistaxis were observed regardless of the type of spacer used.

Assess the use and potential benefits of a new robotic system for transoral radical tonsillectomy, transoral supraglottic laryngectomy, and retroauricular thyroidectomy in a cadaver dissection.

Three previously described robotic procedures (transoral radical tonsillectomy, transoral supraglottic laryngectomy, and retroauricular thyroidectomy) were performed in a cadaver using the da Vinci Xi Surgical System. Surgical exposure and access, operative time, and number of collisions were examined objectively.

The new robotic system was used to perform transoral radical tonsillectomy with dissection and preservation of glossopharyngeal nerve branches, transoral supraglottic laryngectomy, and retroauricular thyroidectomy. There was excellent exposure without any difficulties in access. Robotic operative times (excluding set-up and docking times) for the 3 procedures in the cadaver were 12.7, 14.3, and 21.2 minutes (excluding retroauricular incision and subplatysmal elevation), respectively. Histologically, the epithelium of adult mouse seminiferous tubules has been divided into 12 stages based on the associations of spermatogenic cells in four cycles of spermatogenesis. However, the gross characteristics of the seminiferous tubules themselves, including their number, length, run, and mutual relationships remain largely unknown. In the present study, we analyzed all seminiferous tubules in a single adult mouse testis with high resolution using serial paraffin sections and high-perfomance three-dimensional reconstruction software. There were 11 seminiferous tubules with an average length of 140 mm. Each tubule ran along circular paths within the testis while making convolutions with cranial and caudal hairpin turns. The cranial turns of all tubules were in contact with the tunica albuginea, whereas the caudal turns were not, resulting in funnel-shaped networks of these tubules with tapered caudal portions. The caudally located networks surrounded the preceding cranially located networks from the bottom and outside, similar to stacked paper cups. Five out of the 11 seminiferous tubules were continuous from one end to the other both connected with the rete testis (10 connection points). Nine branching points, one blind end, and 18 more connection points with the rete testis were detected in the remaining six seminiferous tubules, making the paths of these tubules complicated to various degrees. The present study revealed that the 3D structures of seminiferous tubules were highly regular as a whole in the adult mouse testis.Topological insulators (TIs) are an unusual phase of quantum matter with nontrivial spin-momentum-locked topological surface states (TSS). The electrical detection of spin-momentum-locking of TSS has been lacking till very recently. Many of the results are from samples with significant bulk conduction, such as Bi2Se3, where it can be challenging to separate the surface and bulk contribution to the spin signal. Here, we report spin potentiometric measurements in flakes exfoliated from bulk insulating Bi2Te2Se crystals, using two outside nonmagnetic contacts for driving a DC spin helical current and a middle ferromagnetic (FM)-Al2O3 contact for detecting spin polarization. The voltage measured by the FM electrode exhibits a hysteretic step-like change when sweeping an in-plane magnetic field between opposite directions along the easy axis of the FM contact. Importantly, the direction of the voltage change can be reversed by reversing the direction of current, and the amplitude of the change as measured by the difference in the detector voltage between opposite FM magnetization increases linearly with increasing current, consistent with the current-induced spin polarization of spin-momentum-locked TSS. Our work directly demonstrates the electrical injection and detection of spin polarization in TI and may enable utilization of TSS for applications in nanoelectronics and spintronics.
Epidemiological data suggest that lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTSs) may be associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). Inflammation has been proposed as a candidate mechanism at the crossroad between these two clinical entities. The aim of this review article is to evaluate the role of MetS-induced inflammation in the pathogenesis and progression of LUTS.

A systematic review was conducted using the keywords 'metabolic syndrome and lower urinary tract symptoms' within the title search engines including PubMed, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library for relevant research work published between 2000 and January 2015. The obtained literature was reviewed by the primary author (QH) and was assessed for eligibility and standard level of evidence.

Total of 52 articles met the eligibility criteria. On the basis of database search during the past 15 years and our systematic review of prospective and retrospective cohorts, case-control trials, observational studies and animal data identified a possible link between MetS-induced inflammation and LUTS including BPH, bladder outlet obstruction, overactive bladder, urinary incontinence and other possible urinary tract abnormalities.

Here we report a simple approach to forming patterned, spatially resolved multicomponent supramolecular hydrogels. A multicomponent gel is first formed from two low-molecular-weight gelators and consists of two types of fibre, each formed by only one gelator. One type of fibre in this 'self-sorted network' is then removed selectively by a light-triggered gel-to-sol transition. We show that the remaining network has the same mechanical properties as it would have done if it initially formed alone. Here we report the step-by-step construction of a prototype mimic of the AIS that we call an adaptive immune response simulator (AIRS). DNA and enzymes are used as simple artificial analogues of the components of the AIS to create a system that responds to specific molecular stimuli in vitro. We show that this network of reactions can function in a manner that is superficially similar to the most basic responses of the vertebrate AIS, including reaction sequences that mimic both humoral and cellular responses. As such, AIRS provides guidelines for the design and engineering of artificial reaction networks and molecular devices.
