The Benefits and Drawbacks of a 3 Wheeled Pushchair
If you frequently walk on rough terrain or would like to exercise in a pushchair with three wheels, it's the ideal choice. They are the best choice if you need a pushchair that can tackle any terrain, from busy roads to forest tracks.
For more manoeuvrability, look for a model that has swivelling or lockable front wheels. Larger wheels, both front and back can provide an easier ride on different surfaces.
Manoeuvrability
A 3 wheel pushchair is a fantastic option for those looking to be able to move easily. The wheels are positioned close together allowing the chassis to rotate and turn much more easily than a standard 4 wheel pushchair, making them ideal for busy streets and shops. Some models have smaller front wheels that are locked and swivelled to give them extra maneuverability. The Roma Atlas has two wheels in the front set close together and a clever lock that allows it to be as stable as a three-wheeler while maintaining the same maneuverability.
A majority of our top-selling 3 wheelers come with a 4-in-1 travel systems which can change from stroller to a toddler seat or car seat carrier as your child grows. This is great when you're planning to travel with your family or on frequent trips to the shops. One such example is the Baby Jogger Nipper pushchair that features Hauck's XL air wheels with a 360-swivel front wheel that locks and a suspension system that allows it to be used on all types of terrain, including off-road, and jogging after your child is old enough to join in with you!
Another good choice is the ickle Bubba Nipper which is an all-terrain pushchair with great suspension and large puncture proof tyres that allow it to be used for off-roading as well as smooth city pavements. It's suitable for use from birth (in the seat that can be reversible, or with a carrycot compatible) and features a handy one-handed instant fold for storage in the boot and airport travel.
It's important to choose the right wheels for a pushchair based on where it will be used most. Moulded wheels work well in the city but not on more rough terrain. If you are planning to get your pushchair off of paved surfaces, choose pneumatic tyres. They can handle rough terrain.
If you're looking for a model that can be used in both urban and rural settings, then check out our top-rated Bugaboo Fox 5 All Terrain pushchair. It has all the suspension and large wheels you'd expect from a pushchair designed for all-terrain use, but it's also an urban pushchair that's extremely light and has the option of locking the front wheel.
Stability
You can improve the stability of your buggy by searching for certain features. Some designs have an swiveling front wheel that is locked to give additional stability when driving on rough terrain. This is particularly helpful if you are going to use your pushchair off-road or running, as it gives you the confidence to take off on different surfaces easily.
Another excellent stability feature is suspension - this can make your buggy far more comfortable for both the baby and you, especially on uneven ground. Some brands allow you to swap out tyres with different sizes so that you can alter the performance of your pushchair to the type of terrain you'll be riding it on.
If 3 wheeler pushchair looking for a 3-wheeled pushchair that is able to perform on any terrain, consider investing in a model with air-filled tyres. These wheels will provide smoother rides over bumps, and are less likely to break than solid wheels. These wheels will permit you to ride your buggy on surfaces that are not paved and can be used on many surfaces such as grass, sand, and mud.
All-terrain pushchairs are generally slightly larger than standard pushchairs, but there are plenty of excellent options that won't compromise on maneuverability or stability. One of our favourites is the UPPAbaby Ridge, has many remarkable features that allow it to be used for off-road walking as well as jogging after your child is of the right age. They include large, foam-filled never-flat tyres, adjustable suspension and a quick, one-handed folding.
The Bugaboo Fox 5 is another excellent all-terrain stroller. It's got similar features to the UPPAbaby, and is equipped with an excellent suspension, large puncture-proof tires, and a one handed fold. It is compatible with a variety of car seats and can also accommodate the carrycot. It's a little heavier than other 3-wheelers, however it's still a great option for parents who wish to have their pushchair equipped to travel in any terrain.
Weight
The downside of strollers with 3 wheels is that they can be heavy, especially if you have to navigate rough terrain and kerbs. The larger rear wheels of a 3-wheeler increase the overall weight, which is heavier than a 4-wheeler. This means you will need more strength when lifting them.
If you require a pushchair that is able to handle rough terrain and tarmac that is rocky the all-terrain model might be worth a look. These models typically come with particular features, such as strong suspension systems and large puncture-proof tires. Nowadays, manufacturers are developing all-terrain pushchairs using gel-filled or foam-filled tyres that are not designed to roll flat, so they don't require inflation.
UPPAbaby's Ridge all-terrain stroller offers a wide range of features that are child-friendly and will allow it to tackle various terrains easily. Including the ability to lock the front wheel, a quick and simple one-handed fold, a large basket and an adjustable handlebar. MFM reviewer Becky said that the Ridge is "very ideal for woodland walks, gravel roads and market town cobbles".
iCandy is another brand that offers a range of all terrain pushchairs. Their latest all-terrain model the Core is suitable for babies from birth and is used with a carrycot as well as car seat adaptors. The iCandy Core has a host of features that will make it a fantastic all-terrain pushchair - including large foam-filled tyres that never flatten and an excellent suspension system. The Core is heavier than other all-terrain strollers yet lightweight enough to travel in rough terrain.
Folding
If you're in search of a pushchair that can handle the most difficult of terrain, you might be interested in an all-terrain model. This kind of pushchair comes with large wheels both on the front and rear to make it easier to navigate rough off-road terrain. They usually have more durable suspension as well as more puncture-proof tyres that can prevent them from becoming clogged with grass, sticks or mud.
The Mountain Buggy Ridge is a great model of a pushchair similar to this. This all-terrain pushchair comes with numerous impressive features, like a an easy suspension, a large basket, one-handed steering, and a quick, one-handed folding. It also works with the car seat and carrycot (with adaptors), so it can be used in as early as 6 months.
Bugaboo Fox 5 is another all-terrain stroller with amazing off-road features. It has a massive 10kg basket, which can be folded with one hand. The handlebar can be adjusted by one hand. It also has an adjustable front wheel that locks and foam-filled, never-flat tyres, so you won't have to worry about punctures in rough terrain.
The GB Maris is a new stylish, attractive all-terrain stroller that was recently launched at the Kind + Jugend trade fair. It was designed for children who have mild to moderate mobility requirements. It has soft, adjustable components and an adjustable reclining chair. The front wheel can be locked, and it has a foot brake for added control and security.
Whether you're shopping for a 3 wheeled pushchair or a four-wheeler, we carry a wide range of designs and features that will fit your family. A majority of the models we sell come with sturdy, durable frames and tough wheels that last a lifetime and provide excellent storage solutions for all your baby's belongings.
