This is evident in the cardiovascular system, one of the first organs to develop and one whose function is vital to human life. Epigenetic mechanisms are central in regulating transcription and signaling programs that drive cardiovascular disease and development. The epigenome not only instructs cell and context specific gene expression signatures, but also retains "memory" of past events and can pass it down to subsequent generations. Understanding the various input and output signals from the cardiac epigenome is crucial for unraveling the molecular underpinnings of cardiovascular disease and development. This knowledge is useful for patient risk stratification, understanding disease pathophysiology, and identifying novel approaches for cardiac regeneration and therapy. In this special issue, a series of high-quality reviews and original research articles examining the field of cardiac epigenetics will broaden our insights into this fundamental aspect of molecular and cellular cardiology. Topics include DNA methylation, histone modifications, chromatin architecture, transcription factors, and long non-coding RNA biology in the diverse cell types that comprise the cardiovascular system. We hope that our readers will expand their horizons and be challenged to envision innovative strategies to further probe the epigenome and develop diagnostic and therapeutic solutions for cardiovascular pathologies.

Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) records were derived from physician and optometry billing, matched with patients aged >19 years with prevalent diabetes between 2011 and 2013. Cross-sectional, comparative study.

A total of 140 participants were included in the study and divided into 2 groups 70 patients diagnosed with FUS (FUS group) and 70 healthy individuals (control group).

The groups were compared in terms of ocular examination findings and CBC parameters. The independent samples t test was used to examine variables between the groups. The Pearson correlation test was performed to analyze correlation among the severity of anterior chamber reaction, duration of FUS, and CBC indices.

The mean lymphocyte count and lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) were significantly higher in the FUS group than in the control group (p = 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively). The mean monocyte count and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) were significantly lower in the FUS group than in the control group (p = 0.010 and p = 0.003, respectively). In the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, the area under the curve (AUC) for LMR was 0.834, with a sensitivity of 82.6% and a specificity of 80.0%. The AUC for NLR was 0.789, with a sensitivity of 71.2% and a specificity of 70.0%. LMR was positively correlated with duration of FUS (p = 0.001, r = 0.574).

For that, we submitted adult C57BL/6 J mice to mild and controlled temporary dehydration, i.e., 6 h of water access every 48 h for 15 days. We investigated their social behavior in a social interaction task known to allow free and reciprocal social contact. Results showed that temporary dehydration increases significantly time spent in social contact and social dominance. It also expands 5-HT neuron density within both DRN and MRN and the behavioral and neuronal plasticity were positively correlated. Our findings suggest that disturbance in 5-HT neurotransmission caused by temporary dehydration stress unbalances choice processes of animals in social context.
