A 63-year-old female was admitted to our hospital with history of persistent dyspnea. Right pleural effusion and ovarian tumor were discovered, but here were no significant findings on thoracoscopy under local anesthesia. The pleural effusion was suspected to be secondary to Meigs' syndrome, and a diagnosis of endometriotic ovarian cyst was made. Since the pleural effusion resolved after surgery, the patient was diagnosed with incomplete pseudo-Meigs' syndrome. We consider this to be a valuable case, as there are no previously reported cases of pseudo-Meigs' syndrome derived from an endometriotic ovarian cyst, to the best of our knowledge.Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infections of the musculoskeletal system are commonly missed due to its rarity and the absence of systemic symptoms. A high clinical index of suspicion is required to recognize such infections as they may occur in immunocompetent hosts. We present two cases of foot and ankle NTM infections involving Mycobacterium fortuitum and Mycobacterium abscessus in two such patients. The first case involves an 83-year old lady who presented with a two-month history of multiple foot abscesses initially treated at a rural hospital. She underwent drainage and debridement of her foot, with eventual cultures growing Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Mycobacterium abscessus. She was initially treated with clarithromycin and doxycycline. At one year follow-up review, her wound healed completely. The second case involves a 55-year old man who presented with infection following midfoot fusion and anterolateral thigh flap for an open complex fracture dislocation of his right foot. Cultures eventually grew Mycobacterium fortuitum and he was treated with cefoxitin, clarithromycin and doxycycline. 10 months after his initial injury, the infection has cleared and his flap was clean. Through these 2 cases, we hope to highlight the unusual presentations of such infections and illustrate that with a high initial index of suspicion and appropriate treatment, these infections can be treated successfully.Maxillary transversal deficiency (MTD) is a common skeletal problem. If not treated on time, MTD evolve to a more complex malocclusion. selleck inhibitor This problem can affect facial growth and development. Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) procedure frequently used for the management. link2 This technique is usually successful in young individuals but as the age advances and the articulations of the maxilla with surrounding facial bones get more rigid, it becomes ineffective. Undesirable side effects or results have been reported after use of RME in skeletally mature patients such as buccal tipping of posterior teeth, extrusion, periodontal tissue recession, fenestration of buccal cortex, necrosis of palatal tissue, failure in opening of midpalatal suture, pain, and relapse of expansion. Side effects of RME are often temporary and permanent damages are rarely seen. The aim of this report is to present the management of a permanent side effect of the RME procedure in a 13-year-old child.
Sleep disorder is among the most common problems in the life of postmenopausal women. Because of the complications of chemical drugs, many women prefer to use herbal supplements for relieving sleep problems. So, the main objective of this study was to determine the effect of the jujube seed capsule on sleep quality in postmenopausal women.
This study was a double-blind clinical trial conducted on 106 postmenopausal women in Khuzestan province, southwest of Iran. All participants were selected by a simple non-probability sampling method. Data were collected through a demographic data form and the Pittsburgh sleeps quality index (PSQI). Individuals were randomly divided into intervention (
= 53) and control (
= 53) groups. The intervention group received 250 mg oral jujube seed capsule and the control group received a placebo capsule twice a day for 21 days. After the treatment, the PSQI was completed in both intervention and control groups. Data were analyzed using the independent t-test and the Chi-square test using SPSS software version 24, and
-value < 0.05 was considered as the significance level.
The results revealed that after treatment, the mean scores of sleep quality decreased in the intervention and control group. Although this difference was statistically significant in both intervention and control groups (
-value < 0.05), more reduction observed in the intervention group (
-value < 0.001).
Consumption of the jujube seed capsule had a positive impact on improving the sleep quality of postmenopausal women and could be recommended as a useful herbal medication.

To evaluate the role of three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction tumors and vessels of the kidneys in aiding the preoperative planning of partial nephrectomy.
Patients with renal tumors to be treated with partial nephrectomy were included. Each patient underwent a preoperative computed tomography (CT) survey, and the reconstruction of each patient's 3D arteriography and 3D surface-rendered tumor was performed based on the CT images for preoperative surgical planning.
A total of 6 patients, three with tumors of the right kidney and three with tumors of the left kidney, were enrolled in the study. The patients' mean age was 49.33 ± 4.03 years (range 45-57 years), and their mean tumor size was 4.4 ± 1.84 cm (range 2.2-6.8 cm). Four underwent robot-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomies, one underwent a traditional laparoscopic partial nephrectomy, and one underwent a radical nephrectomy through laparotomy. Their average postoperative hospital stay was 6.7 days (range 3-10 days). No intraoperative or postoperative complications were noted. The renal function was preserved in all the patients, and none of the patients exhibited evidence of local recurrence during more than 6 years of follow-up.

The diagnosis of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) especially at the subacute stage is still a challenging issue using the conventional imaging modalities. Here we evaluated the role of double inversion recovery (DIR) sequence of MRI compared with the conventional gradient-recalled echo (GRE)-T2*-W and susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) sequences in the diagnosis of subacute SAH.
This prospective study was conducted on 21 patients with SAH, which were diagnosed using CT scan at the initial step. In the third week after the injury (14-20 days), all patients underwent a brain MRI exam that included T2*-W, SWI, and DIR imaging sequences. All images were independently read by two radiologists, who were blinded to the clinical history of the patients. The presence or absence of SAH was reviewed and assessed in 6 anatomical regions.
On the DIR images, 20 patients were found to have at least one subarachnoid signal abnormality, while the SWI and T2*-W images identified SAH areas on 17 and 15 patients, respectively. The highest rate of inter-observer consensus by the DIR sequence was found in the interhemispheric fissure and perimesencephalic area (
= 1). Also, a highest rate of inter-observer consensus using SWI was found in the interhemispheric fissure and posterior fossa cistern area (
= 1). A weak agreement was found in frontal-parietal convexity using SWI (
= 0.447), and in posterior fossa cistern by the T2* sequence (
= 0.447).
In conclusion, the DIR sequence was more reliable at identifying signal abnormalities in subacute SAH patients than the T2*-W and SWI sequence, and is suggested as a promising imaging technique for detecting hemorrhagic areas without considering the anatomical distribution of SAH.

Opium addiction has been recently suggested as a potential risk factor for the occurrence of perioperative complications in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether opium addiction can potentially affect patients' short-term postoperative outcomes after CABG surgery.
In a prospective observational cohort study, all consecutive patients who were scheduled for first-time isolated elective on pump CABG surgery were screened during the study period for opium addiction. The study was carried out between September 2015 and November 2016 at Mazandaran Heart Center, Sari, Iran. A total number of 228 patients [110 opium addicted (OA) and 118 non-addicted (NA)] were screened and included. All patients were evaluate, in terms of short-term postoperative outcomes, until hospital discharge or death.
In the OA patients, the mean amount of estimated postoperative bleeding was significantly more than NA patients (535 ± 304.75 ml vs. link3 463.56 ± 209.77; ime and length of hospital stay, in patients undergoing CABG surgery.
Male infertility accounts for nearly 50% of couples' infertility. Only a few studies evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of resistive index (RI) of testicular arteries using color Doppler imaging to identify male infertility. The aim of this study was to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of RI of the capsular and intratesticular branches of testicular arteries in infertile men with oligoasthenospermia and its comparison with normal men.
In a case-control study, 30 patients with oligoasthenospermia (case group) and 30 healthy controls who meet the inclusion criteria, were selected. For all patients, RI was measured using color Doppler ultrasonography in upper and lower testicular poles. Also, testicular volumes were measured for all participants.
Mean RI of the intratesticular artery (0.624 ± 0.051 versus 0.509 ± 0.054; P < 0.001) and capsular artery (0.663 ± 0.057 versus 0.557 ± 0.055; P < 0.001) were significantly higher in the case group compared to control group. The frequency of abnormal RI of ticular Doppler RI of capsular and intratesticular branches of the testicular arteries, as a bio-imaging biomarker, may be a valuable non-invasive and simple complementary diagnostic modality with a high diagnostic value in identifying infertile men with oligoasthenospermia.
manna is used to treat different diseases. Because pregnant women tend to use
and Iranian traditional medicine emphasizes the abortifacient potential of this plant, this study aimed to investigate
manna abortifacient property and effects on estrogen, progesterone, LH and FSH levels in BALB/c mice.
This experimental study was conducted with 70 female BALB/c mice assigned to seven groups Nonpregnant, untreated; nonpregnant,
extract (400 mg/kg)-treated; pregnant,
extract (400, 800 and 1200 mg/kg)-treated; and two pregnant control groups. On 18 and 19 days of pregnancy, cesarean section performed on mice, resorbed embryos counted; then Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), Luteinizing hormone (LH), estrogen and progesterone levels were measured by the ELISA.
extract caused a significant increase abortion in mice. The levels of progesterone, FSH and LH were significantly different among the groups such that mean progesterone level was lower and mean LH and FSH levels were higher in the
extract-treated groups than the pregnant, untreated group.
