Artemisinin resistance in Plasmodium falciparum manifests as slow parasite clearance but this measure is also influenced by host immunity, initial parasite biomass and partner drug efficacy. This study collated data from clinical trials of artemisinin derivatives in falciparum malaria with frequent parasite counts to provide reference parasite clearance estimates stratified by location, treatment and time, to examine host factors affecting parasite clearance, and to assess the relationships between parasite clearance and risk of recrudescence during follow-up.

Data from 24 studies, conducted from 1996 to 2013, with frequent parasite counts were pooled. Parasite clearance half-life (PC1/2) was estimated using the WWARN Parasite Clearance Estimator. Random effects regression models accounting for study and site heterogeneity were used to explore factors affecting PC1/2 and risk of recrudescence within areas with reported delayed parasite clearance (western Cambodia, western Thailand after 2000, southern Vietemisinin resistance, there was no evidence for increasing PC1/2 since 2007.

In clinical research prediction models are used to accurately predict the outcome of the patients based on some of their characteristics. For high-dimensional prediction models (the number of variables greatly exceeds the number of samples) the choice of an appropriate classifier is crucial as it was observed that no single classification algorithm performs optimally for all types of data. Boosting was proposed as a method that combines the classification results obtained using base classifiers, where the sample weights are sequentially adjusted based on the performance in previous iterations. Generally boosting outperforms any individual classifier, but studies with high-dimensional data showed that the most standard boosting algorithm, AdaBoost.M1, cannot significantly improve the performance of its base classier. Recently other boosting algorithms were proposed (Gradient boosting, Stochastic Gradient boosting, LogitBoost); they were shown to perform better than AdaBoost.M1 but their performance was not eadient boosting, which outperformed the other boosting algorithms in our analyses. LogitBoost suffers from overfitting and generally performs poorly.

Depressive symptoms have been reported to be associated with adverse clinical outcome in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) not on dialysis. This association has not been examined in Europe. Anxiety and depressive symptoms often co-occur. However, as yet there are no data concerning a possible association of anxiety symptoms with adverse clinical outcome. We examined the association of depressive and anxiety symptoms with adverse clinical outcome in Dutch CKD patients not on dialysis.

In this 3-year follow-up prospective cohort study, CKD patients not on dialysis with an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≤ 35 ml/min/1.73 m(2) from an urban teaching hospital were selected. Symptoms of depression and anxiety were evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI). Cox proportional hazards models were used to calculate hazard ratio's (HRs) with a composite event of death, initiation of dialysis, and hospitalization as outcome. High prevalence of reproductive morbidities is seen among adolescents in India. Health workers play an important role in providing health services in the community, including the adolescent reproductive health services. A study was done to assess the feasibility of training female health workers (FHWs) in the classification and management of selected adolescent girls' reproductive health problems according to modified WHO algorithms.

The study was conducted between Jan-Sept 2011 in Northern India. Thirteen FHWs were trained regarding adolescent girls' reproductive health as per WHO Adolescent Job-Aid booklet. A pre and post-test assessment of the knowledge of the FHWs was carried out. All FHWs were given five modified WHO algorithms to classify and manage common reproductive morbidities among adolescent girls. All the FHWs applied the algorithms on at least ten adolescent girls at their respective sub-centres. Simultaneously, a medical doctor independently applied the same algorithms in all girls. Classifsful in increasing the knowledge of the FHWs about adolescent girls' reproductive health issues. The FHWs were able to satisfactorily classify the common adolescent girls' problems using the modified WHO algorithms.

Furthermore, we assessed the effect of thrombin levels that were measured in the ischemic brain on synaptic transmission. We found that in the brains of mice following transient middle cerebral artery occlusion, thrombin activity is elevated throughout the ischemic hemisphere, including in peri-infarct areas (90 ± 33 and 60 ± 18 mU/mL, in the infarct and peri-infarct areas, respectively, compared to 11 ± 3 and 12 ± 5 mU/mL, in the corresponding contralateral areas; mean ± SE; p less then 0.05).
