The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of genotype imputation for Afrikaner, Brahman, and Brangus cattle of South Africa using within- and multiple-breed reference populations. A total of 373, 309, and 101 Afrikaner, Brahman, and Brangus cattle, respectively, were genotyped using the GeneSeek Genomic Profiler 150 K panel that contained 141,746 markers. Markers with MAF ≤ 0.02 and call rates ≤ 0.95 or that deviated from Hardy Weinberg Equilibrium frequency with a probability of ≤ 0.0001 were excluded from the data as were animals with a call rate ≤ 0.90. The remaining data included 99,086 SNPs and 360 Afrikaner, 75,291 SNPs and 288 animals Brahman, and 97,897 SNPs and 99 Brangus animals. A total of 7986, 7002, and 7000 SNP from 50 Afrikaner and Brahman and 30 Brangus cattle, respectively, were masked and then imputed using BEAGLE v3 and FImpute v2. The within-breed imputation yielded accuracies ranging from 89.9 to 96.6% for the three breeds. The multiple-breed imputation yielded corresponding accuracies from 69.21 to 88.35%. The results showed that population homogeneity and numerical representation for within and across breed strategies, respectively, are crucial components for improving imputation accuracies.In this paper, we apply the capabilities approach-with the addition of capability ceilings-to energy justice. We argue that, to ensure energy justice, energy policies and scenarios should consider enabling not only minimal capability thresholds but also maximum capability ceilings. It is permissible, perhaps even morally required, to limit the capabilities of those above the threshold if it is necessary for enabling those below the threshold to reach the level required by justice. Drawing on the relation between points on the human development index and levels of energy consumption, we conclude that non-tragic mitigation policies now are highly preferable to tragic policies later.The study, conducted on 70 smallholder dairy farms in Northern Ethiopia, aimed to evaluate whether variation in milk yield (in early and mid-lactation) of multiparous Holstein-Friesian crossbred cows is related to diet composition and quality. At early stage (1-120 days in milk (DIM)), a total of 70 dairy farms were used, while at mid-lactation (121-240 DIM), 54 dairy farms continued to be part of the study. K-means clustering was applied to group the cows based on energy-corrected milk yield (ECMY) into three milk production farm clusters (MPFC) Low MPFC (5.7-9.3 L/day), medium MPFC (9.4-12.8 L/day), and high MPFC (12.9-17.6 L/day). The dry matter intake (DMI) of cows during early lactation for high MPFC and low MPFC was 14.1 and 11.2 kg/day, respectively. The dietary proportion of crop residues in diets offered to crossbred cows tended to be lower in the high MPFC during early as well as in mid-lactation. Cows from the high MPFC consumed diets with higher (rumen degradable) protein levels both in early and in mid-lactation, while dietary fiber fractions and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) only differed in early lactation. Multiple regression models indicated that DMI (kg/day) in combination with either neutral detergent fiber, crude protein, or IVDMD (g/kg DM) explained about 25% of the variation in daily ECMY expressed relative to body weight (mL/kg). Hence, higher milk production is linked to both increased DMI and better quality of diets.The systematic assessment of spatial and temporal distribution of groundwater recharge (GWR) is crucial for the sustainable management of the water resources systems, especially in large-scale river basins. This helps in identifying critical zones in which GWR largely varies and thus leads to negative consequences. However, such analyses might not be possible when the models require detailed hydro-climate and hydrogeological data in data-scarce regions. Hence, this calls for alternate suitable modeling approaches that are applicable with the limited data and, however, includes the detailed assessment of the spatial-temporal distribution of different water balance components especially the GWR component. N-Nitroso-N-methylurea in vivo This paper aimed at investigating the spatial and temporal distribution of the GWR at monthly, seasonal and annual scales using the WetSpass-M physically distributed hydrological model, which is not requiring the detailed catchment information. In addition, the study conducted the sensitivity analysis of model parameters to assess the significant variation of GWR. The large-scale river basins such as the Omo river basin, Ethiopia, were chosen to demonstrate the potential of the WetSpass-M model under limited data conditions. From the modeling results, it was found that the maximum average monthly GWR of 13.4 mm occurs in July. The estimated average seasonal GWR is 32.5 mm/yr and 47.6 mm/yr in the summer and winter seasons, respectively. Further, it was found that GWR is highly sensitive to the parameter such as average rainfall intensity factor.The deteriorating conditions in stream ecosystems are detrimental for society as far as its health, and development is concerned if the underlying factors continue to operate without regular monitoring. In order to maintain the health of a stream ecosystem, assessment of spatiotemporal changes in its physicochemical attributes and identification of all factors that could alter its hydrological regime is an essential component for managing it. The current 2-year study (October-2017 to September-2019) assessed the physicochemical regime of lower stretches of the Vishav stream, a major left-bank tributary of river Jhelum on a spatiotemporal basis. The physicochemical data was analyzed through linear regression, ANOVA (followed by Duncan's test), multivariate statistical analysis, viz., principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA). Linear regression pointed out the nature and magnitude of the relationship between different physicochemical variables (p  less then  0.05). PCA showed that WT, pH, EC, NO3-N, TDS, TH, and DO are the major factors reflecting the water quality of the Vishav stream. The range in water quality parameters of the Vishav stream was found conducive for the inhabitant fishes. Two well-defined clusters were obtained, wherein Cluster-I comprising of Site-III (a downstream pollution prone site) and Cluster-II comprising of Site-II and Site-I (mid- and upstream site respectively) are less prone to human interferences. The present study could serve as baseline information to manage and conserve this precious element of the aquatic ecosphere in terms of better water quality for humans and its inhabitant faunal elements especially fish which play a significant role in the economy of that region.Surface water bodies are vital source of water for human consumption, domestic needs, agriculture, industrial activities, and also for aquatic life and ecosystems. In this study, a stretch of river Gomti was studied at 5 sites in Lucknow for two consecutive seasons during 2019. The physicochemical-bacteriological parameters of water and sediment samples were analyzed, followed by multivariate statistics. Mean values of pH, turbidity, EC, TS, TDS, TSS, DO, BOD, COD, nitrate, phosphate, sulfate, total alkalinity, total hardness, chloride, and fluoride during the pre-monsoon period were 7.4 ± 0.2, 5.2 ± 3.3 (NTU), 444.4 ± 97.4 (µS/cm), 274.6 ± 61.6, 254.3 ± 50.2, 21.9 ± 11, 5.4 ± 1.6, 10.2 ± 5.9, 31.2 ± 13.3, 1.2 ± 0.5, 1.7 ± 1.1, 25.9 ± 3.7, 204 ± 41.8, 146.2 ± 11.5, 15.5 ± 8.7, and 0.5 ± 0.1 mg/l, respectively. The corresponding values during the post-monsoon season were 7.5 ± 0.2, 5.5 ± 3.2 (NTU), 436 ± 75.1 (µS/cm), 273.7 ± 124.2, 209.7 ± 82.5, 63.9 ± 43.4, 5.6 ± 1.6, 15.8 ± 8.9, 39.2 ± 23.5, 5.4 ± 4.6, 1.4 ± 0.9, 25.5 ± 5, 199.2 ± 36.6, 134 ± 8.6, 20.2 ± 8.9, and 1.7 ± 0.2 mg/l, respectively. Concentration of pollutants significantly increased by 5-15% from sampling station S1 (upstream) to S5 (downstream). Enumerations of fecal coliform and Escherichia coli bacteria were low at S1 but significantly higher at the S5 site. WQI ranged from 88 to 345 during pre-monsoon and 159 to 422 during post-monsoon period, indicating poor water quality which was unsuitable for drinking purposes. Strong positive correlations (≥ 0.9) were observed among pH, chloride, phosphate, sulfate, turbidity, conductivity, TS, TDS, BOD, and COD for water samples during both seasons. The data reveals that pollution load increases gradually from upstream to downstream due to the increasing discharge of raw sewage. link2 Regulatory bodies should formulate strict regulations and ensure their implementation for the protection and management of river water quality.This present study aims to determine the lowest concentration effects of the assayed different antibiotics; antimicrobial agents alone and their combinations with nisin were investigated to prevent the biofilm formation and break down the biofilm structure of Salmonella. While the combination of nisin and EDTA showed a synergistic effect against Salmonella strain, chlorhexidine digluconate and streptomycin with nisin showed a partial synergetic effect; citric acid and sulfonamides with nisin showed an indifferent effect. The use of citric acid and chlorhexidine digluconate alone was very effective in Salmonella inhibition. While the citric acid combined with other agents had not much effect, the use of chlorhexidine digluconate combined with nisin and EDTA inactivated the total initial count within 24 h. Significantly, when citric acid and sulfonamides are used alone, they reduce by 64% and 44%, respectively. When they used nisin + EDTA, this ratio increased to 83% and 84%, respectively. For the prevention of biofilm, the most suitable conditions were determined as 97% biofilm inhibition. The results of this study can be used as a guide for the emergence of new approaches to ensure the food safety and quality of the food industry.Wound dressings that exert an antimicrobial effect in order to prevent and treat wound infections can be harmful to the wound healing process. Dressings with hydrophobic coatings, however, have been suggested to both reduce the microbial load and promote the healing process. link3 Therefore, the potential effects of a dialkylcarbamoyl chloride (DACC)-coated dressing on fibroblasts and keratinocytes in wound healing were studied using mechanical scratch wounding of confluent cell layers as an in vitro model. Additionally, gene expression analysis by qRT-PCR was used to elucidate the longitudinal effects of the DACC-coated dressing on cell responses, specifically inflammation, growth factor induction and collagen synthesis. DACC promoted cell viability, did not stick to the cell layers, and supported normal wound healing progression in vitro. In contrast, cells became attached to the uncoated reference material, which inhibited scratch closure. Moreover, DACC slightly induced KGF, VEGF, and GM-CSF expression in HaCaT cells and NHDF.
