The independent variables considered were the total body ECW/ICW ratio, age, body mass index, number of medications, presence of pain, and a history of certain conditions.

The results indicated that an increased total body ECW/ICW ratio in community-dwelling elderly women was associated with a decreased handgrip strength and gait speed. Furthermore, the total body ECW/ICW ratio was significantly, independently associated with handgrip strength even after adjusting for confounding factors.

These findings suggest that the total body ECW/ICW ratio may indicate health conditions in community-dwelling elderly women.

To identify barriers and facilitators of pediatric to adult transitions among adolescents with IBD and their parents.

This cross-sectional study used photovoice to explore adolescent and parent perspectives on transitions in IBD care. Adolescents with IBD aged 14-23 and their parents were recruited from an urban IBD center during clinic visits. Participants completed a survey, took photos, participated in a semi-structured interview, and optionally participated in a focus group. Interviews were recorded and transcribed. Two analysts coded interview data for themes using MAXQDA software.

Thirteen adolescents and eleven parents submitted photos and participated in an interview. The mean patient age was 19.0±3.0. The mean parent age was 51.5±5.4. Eleven (84.6%) adolescents were Caucasian; 12 (92.3%) privately insured; 4 (30.8%) in high school, 5 (38.4%) in college, and 4 (30.8%) in the workforce. Adolescent transition-readiness, resilience, and IBD-related self-efficacy scores were relatively high, with hinderstanding the gut-brain axis and accessing resources to optimize mental health and well-being among transition-aged adolescents and their caregivers. The use of the antibiotic enrofloxacin (ENR) in poultry is controversial. IU1 in vitro A high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to fast-scanning fluorescence detection (HPLC-FSFD) method for the determination of ENR in egg white, egg yolk, and lyophilized samples was developed. IU1 in vitro In a first analysis, the long-term administration of ENR (100 days) to laying hens was carried out to determine its presence in egg white, yolk, or both. The predominance of ENR was observed in egg white and variations in the weight of egg white and eggshell was evidenced, showing a potential problem in the industry. Eventually, the presence of ENR was confirmed in commercial lyophilized egg white samples in concentration values around 350 µg kg-1. The consumer exposure assessment was estimated for children, adolescents, and adults. The result displayed that, in an intake of lyophilized egg white with food-producing animals, the %ADI exceeds 100%, showing toxicological levels.Nowadays, the use of carob (Ceratonia siliqua L.) is reduced to its seeds. In fact, the food additive E410, locust bean gum, is obtained from its endosperm. However, the available information regarding the bioactive potential of carob seeds is limited and, often, with poorly established terminologies, not allowing the reader to know if the studied samples included seedless or seeded samples. So, the present study intended to carry out a chemical characterization of carob seeds focused on their bioactive compounds and test their bioactive properties. Carob seeds proved to be a source of tocopherols and organic acids, including phenolic compounds. Its antioxidant potential was demonstrated in vitro, as well as its antimicrobial capacity. This work proves that carob seeds have other functions in addition to those associated with E410. link2 Thus, another potential can be given to the locust bean seed, namely the function of food preservative. The effect of different types of sugar (sucrose, demerara, brown, fructose, coconut sugar, and honey) on sheep milk kefir was evaluated. IU1 in vitro Microbial counts (Lactobacillus, Lactococcus, Leuconostoc, yeast), antagonistic activity against foodborne pathogens, microstructure (scanning electron microscopy), and antiproliferative activity of cancer cells were evaluated. Furthermore, the antioxidant activity (DPPH), inhibitory activity of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE), α-amylase, and α-glucosidase, lactose content, lactic and acetic acids and ethanol, fatty acid profile and volatile organic compounds were determined. The addition of sugars increased the Lactobacillus population (up to 2.24 log CFU/mL), metabolites concentration, antagonistic activity against pathogens, antioxidant activity (11.1 to 24.1%), ACE inhibitory activity (27.5 to 37.6%), α-amylase inhibition (18 to 37.4%), and anti-proliferative activity. Furthermore, it improved the fatty acid profile and volatile compounds. The results suggest that the replacement of sucrose with different types of sugar constitute an interesting option to be used in sheep milk kefir formulations. The poor gel strength and microbial infection of conventional chicken myofibrillar protein (CMP) gels have severely limited the application. Here, plasma activated water (PAW) instead of normal water was used to prepare CMP gels. PAW prepared by treating deionized water with plasma jet was incubated with CMPs and followed by heating to prepare CMP gels. Effects of PAW on CMP gels were assessed in terms of basic physicochemical properties, network structure, and antibacterial activity. The results showed that PAW treatment accelerated the aggregation of CMPs and increased the strength and water holding capacity of CMP gels. Due to the presence of NO and NO2 free radicals in PAW, the prepared CMP gels were endowed with antibacterial activity against Salmonella Enteritidis and Staphylococcus aureus. The new method of PAW-induced CMP gels will have the prospect of improving the quality of gels and extending the shelf life of chicken gel products. The knowledge of the changes in the lipid species in irradiated goat meat is expected to clarify the beneficial effects of irradiation on meat preservation. This study explored the characteristic lipid composition and the changes in irradiated goat meat based on quantitative lipidomics strategy by LC-MS. Totally, 12 subclasses of 174 lipids were identified with significant differences (p 1), and the absolute quantitative analysis of characteristic lipids was achieved. link2 Significant lipid variables were involved in the major pathways of glycerophospholipid and sphingolipid metabolism. Moreover, significant increases during irradiation were found in total TG, PC, PE, LPE, Cer, LPC and SPH, while the total DG, PS, PG, PI and SM decreased after irradiation. Noteworthily, DHA-enriched PC (184/226) + H, a core nutrient for human health, exhibited an increase in the irradiated group. link3 These results provide a basis for lipid quantitative alterations in irradiated goat meat and application of irradiation in meat preservation.
Zinc homeostasis is regulated by SLC39A/ZIP, SLC30A/ZnT, and metallothionein (MT) families in human cells. Zinc dyshomeostasis may affect or be affected by the abnormal behavior of cancer cells. Although decreased serum zinc levels are observed in patients with pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD), limited information is available regarding the expression pattern and prognostic roles of zinc homeostasis-related genes in PAAD.

The primary objective of this study was to explore the expression pattern and prognostic roles of zinc homeostasis-related genes in PAAD.

The expression pattern of 35 known zinc homeostasis-related genes in PAAD was systemically explored based on RNA-sequencing data from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) projects. link3 The association between the expression levels of zinc homeostasis-related genes and survival of PAAD patients was evaluated using the Kaplan-Meier method and the log-rank test. Expressional correlation between zinc homeostasis-related ge PAAD patients. link2 We further demonstrated that knockdown of ZIP11 attenuated Capan-1 cell proliferation with decreased activation of ERK1/2 pathway; knockdown of ZnT1 attenuated Capan-1 cell proliferation with decreased activation of ERK1/2, p38 MAPK, NF-kB, and mTOR pathways; knockdown of ZnT6 attenuated Capan-1 cell proliferation with decreased activation of ERK1/2, p38 MAPK, and NF-kB pathways.

Higher expression of the zinc transporter ZIP4, ZIP11, ZnT1 or ZnT6 predicted poorer prognosis in patients with PAAD. IU1 in vitro These findings provide new clues for understanding the complex relationship between zinc homeostasis and pancreatic cancer.

This is critical for the productivity and generalization of human reasoning, and is considered a necessary ingredient for human-level artificial intelligence. While traditional symbolic methods have proven effective for modeling compositionality, artificial neural networks struggle to learn systematic rules for encoding generalizable structured models. We suggest that this is due in part to short-term memory that is based on persistent maintenance of activity patterns without fast weight changes. We present a recurrent neural network that encodes structured representations as systems of contextually-gated dynamical attractors called attractor graphs. This network implements a functionally compositional working memory that is manipulated using top-down gating and fast local learning. We evaluate this approach with empirical experiments on storage and retrieval of graph-based data structures, as well as an automated hierarchical planning task. link3 Our results demonstrate that compositional structures can be stored in and retrieved from neural working memory without persistent maintenance of multiple activity patterns. Further, memory capacity is improved by the use of a fast store-erase learning rule that permits controlled erasure and mutation of previously learned associations. We conclude that the combination of top-down gating and fast associative learning provides recurrent neural networks with a robust functional mechanism for compositional working memory. The success of neural network based methods in named entity recognition (NER) is heavily relied on abundant manual labeled data. link2 However, these NER methods are unavailable when the data is fully-unlabeled in a new domain. To address the problem, we propose an unsupervised cross-domain model which leverages labeled data from source domain to predict entities in unlabeled target domain. To relieve the distribution divergence when transferring knowledge from source to target domain, we apply adversarial training. link3 Furthermore, we design an entity-aware attention module to guide the adversarial training to reduce the discrepancy of entity features between different domains. Experimental results demonstrate that our model outperforms other methods and achieves state-of-the-art performance.
