We checked activation of different MAPKs by western blot and immunocytochemistry and found that both JNK and p38K, but not ERK pathways are activated in Aβ-treated astrocytes in culture and in Aβ-infused rat brain cortex. Next, to investigate the downstream consequences of these two MAPKs (JNK and p38K) in Aβ-induced astrocyte activation, we individually blocked these pathways by specific inhibitors in presence and absence of Aβ and checked Aβ-induced cellular proliferation, morphological changes and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) upregulation. We found that activation of both JNK and p38K signalling cascades are involved in astrocyte proliferation evoked by Aβ, whereas only p38K pathway is implicated in morphological changes and GFAP upregulation in astrocytes exposed to Aβ. To further validate the implication of p38K pathway in Aβ-induced astrocyte activation, we also observed that transcription factor ATF2, a downstream phosphorylation substrate of p38, is phosphorylated upon Aβ treatment. Taken together, our study indicates that p38K and JNK pathways mediate astrocyte activation and both the pathways are involved in cellular proliferation but only p38K pathway contributes in morphological changes triggered by Aβ.Tuberculosis is a highly infectious disease declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization, with approximately one third of the world's population being latently infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Besides their antimycobacterial activity, natural products can be useful in adjuvant therapy to improve the efficacy of conventional antimycobacterial therapies, to decrease their adverse effects and to reverse mycobacterial multi-drug resistance due to the genetic plasticity and environmental adaptability of Mycobacterium. However, even if some natural products have still been investigated in preclinical and clinical studies, the validation of their efficacy and safety as antituberculosis agents is far from being reached, and, therefore, according to an evidence-based approach, more high-level randomized clinical trials are urgently needed.Some infections, including e.g. influenza and currently active COVID 19, may be transmitted via air during sneezing, coughing, and talking. This pathway occurs via diffusion and gravity-induced drift of single virions and respiratory droplets consisting primarily of water, including small fraction of nonvolatile matter, and containing virions. These processes are accompanied by water evaporation resulting in reduction of the droplet size. The manifold of information concerning these steps is presented in textbooks and articles not related to virology and the focus is there frequently on biologically irrelevant conditions and/or droplet sizes. In this brief review, we systematically describe the behavior of virions and virion-carrying droplets in air with emphasis on various regimes of diffusion, drift, and evaporation, and estimate the rates of all these steps under virologically relevant conditions. In addition, we discuss the kinetic aspects of the first steps of infection after attachment of virions or virion-carrying droplets to the epithelium, i.e., virion diffusion in the mucus and periciliary layers, penetration into the cells, and the early stage of replication. The presentation is oriented to virologists who are interested in the corresponding physics and to physicists who are interested in application of the physics to virology.

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to assess the association between eating behavior scores (cognitive restraint, uncontrolled eating, and emotional eating), and body composition in a sample of Chilean young adults.

Logistic and linear regression models assessed the independent associations between cognitive restraint, uncontrolled eating, and emotional eating, derived from the Three Factor Eating Questionnaire-R18, and body mass index (BMI), percent body fat by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and central obesity, accounting for demographic covariates, stratified by sex, in a sample of 555 participants of the Santiago Longitudinal Study (mean age 22.6 years [SD 0.4]).

Cognitive restraint was positively associated with obesity, defined by BMI, % body fat, and central obesity. Emotional eating was related to obesity, defined by % body fat and central obesity in men and women and to obesity, defined by BMI, in women. link2 Cognitive restraint was related to BMI in men and % body fat in women. Uncontrolled eating was not associated with adiposity in men or women.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate in vitro the effects of three environmental factors (H+, glucose and human plasma) in biofilm formation, by carrier and invasive Streptococcus agalactiae strains of ST17 and ST19 sequence types, including DNase producers and non-producers. Bacteria ability to assemble biofilms was classified based on crystal violet assay. Biofilm formation was also monitored by scanning electron microscopy. Depending on the growth medium used, each bacterial isolate could fit in different biofilm production categories. Our data showed that optimal conditions for S. agalactiae biofilm assembly were reached after 48 h incubation at pH 7.6 in the presence of glucose and inactivated human plasma. In the presence of inactivated human plasma, the biofilm biomass of ST19 strains experienced a higher increase than ST17 strains. The composition of the extracellular polymeric matrix of the three strongest biofilm producers (all from ST17) was accessed by enzymatic digestion of mature biofilms and proteins were shown to be the predominant component. The detailed identification of the extracellular protein components should contribute to the development of new therapeutic strategies to fight S. agalactiae infections.Hypoxic-ischemic (HI) brain injury is one of the most common neurological problems occurring in premature and full-term infants after perinatal complications. Hypothermia is the only treatment approved for HI encephalopathy in newborns. However, this treatment is only partially protective, cannot be used to treat premature infants, and has limited efficacy to treat severe HI encephalopathy. Inflammation contributes to the evolution of HI brain injury in neonates. Inter-alpha Inhibitor Proteins (IAIPs) are immunomodulatory proteins that have neuroprotective properties after exposure to moderate HI in neonatal rats. The objective of the current study was to determine the neuroprotective efficacy of treatment with IAIPs starting immediately after or with a delay of one hour after exposure to severe HI of 120 min duration. One hundred and forty-six 7-day-old rat pups were randomized to sham control, HI and immediate treatment with IAIPs (60 mg/kg) or placebo (PL), and sham, HI and delayed treatment with IAIPs or PL. IAIPs or PL were given at zero, 24, and 48 h after HI or 1, 24 and 48 h after HI. Total brain infarct volume was determined 72 h after exposure to HI. Treatment with IAIPs immediately after HI decreased (P less then 0.05) infarct volumes by 58.0% and 44.5% in male and female neonatal rats, respectively. Delayed treatment with IAIPs after HI decreased (P less then 0.05) infarct volumes by 23.7% in male, but not in female rats. We discovered unexpected daily periodicity-dependent species-specific emergence patterns among the three Diplostomum spp. depending on experimental conditions. At the same time, the intraspecific variation of D. spathaceum cercarial release in response to seasonal conditions was observed. We found that a complex array of mechanisms can affect Diplostomum species-specific patterns in cercarial emergence, of which behavioural characteristics of fish related to reproduction and feeding processes are considered the most important factors. This might represent a specific adaptive evolutionary mechanism to maximise transmission success while avoiding competition for host resources.
