Determining Uranium Smog Quantities inside the Rietspruit Pond, Far Western side Rand Goldfield, South Africa.
No statistical significant differences on daily or seasonal scales between cultivable counts of fungi and bacteria were displayed. However, using the q-PCR technique, the bacterial population was lower in winter. Positive correlations between PM2.5 and relative humidity; and PM2.5 and cultivable microorganism have been established. It was also the case among 7 of the 11 trace elements, indicating then common natural or anthropogenic sources. In summary, this work illustrates the interest of a combined inspection of elements, interactions and dependencies when studying the unique and continuous atmospheric environment, which are typically analysed separately.Due to the increase in the occurrence of bisphenols (BPs) in the environments, it is urgent to develop efficient and ecofriendly methods for their removal. A novel, indirect Z-scheme TiO2-C-BiVO4 film was prepared by a sol-gel method combined with hydrothermal carbonization. The doped graphite carbon was generated in situ from glucose, which acted as an electron-transfer bridge for the Z-scheme system to enhance the heterojunction tightness between TiO2 and BiVO4. This resulted in an increasing separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons and holes and a stronger redox ability of the TiO2-C-BiVO4 film for the degradation and detoxification of BPs. The degradation efficiency of BPs was over 95% in 240 min, except for that of 4,4'-sulphonyldiphenol (BPS) due to the presence of the OSO group, and all of the BPs were nearly completely mineralized when the reaction time reached 360 min. Consequently, the inhibition ratio towards Vibrio fischeri decreased significantly along with the loss and mineralization of aromatic intermediates during photoelectrocatalytic degradation. 2,2-bis(4-Hydroxyphenyl) butane (BPB), 4,4'-(1-phenylethylidene)-bisphenol (BPAP), and (4,4'-hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphenol (BPAF), with relatively high toxicity levels and lipophilicity and as toxic product precursors, require attention in terms of environmental safety. Overall, this work provides a promising and environmentally friendly way to remove BPs from water.
The effects of ambient air pollution on specific mental disorders are rarely studied, and the reported results are inconsistent.

To assess the short-term effect of ambient air pollution on the morbidity of mental disorders in three subtropical Chinese cities.

Daily concentrations of air pollution were averaged from 19 fixed monitoring stations across each city, and data on patients were collected from three psychiatric specialty hospitals. A time-series study combined with a generalized additive Poisson model was conducted to investigate the association between air pollution and mental disorders. The exposure-response relationships were explored and stratified analyses by age and sex were conducted.

A total of 1,133,220 outpatient visits were recorded in three subtropical cities (Huizhou, Shenzhen, and Zhaoqing). The number of daily outpatient visits for mental disorders increased with higher air pollutant (PM
, PM
, SO
and NO
) concentrations, and the effect of NO
appeared to be consistently significant across the three cities, with excess risk (ER) of 4.45% (95% CI 2.90%, 6.04%) in Huizhou, 7.94% (95% CI 6.28%, 9.62%) in Shenzhen, and 2.19% (95% CI 0.51%, 3.89%) in Zhaoqing, respectively, at lag03. We also observed significant effect of PM
at lag0 (ER=1.20%, 95% CI 0.28%, 2.13%), PM
at lag0 (ER=0.99%, 95% CI 0.36%, 1.62%), and SO
at lag0 (ER=10.74%, 95% CI 3.20%, 18.84%) in Shenzhen. For specific mental disorders, significant associations were found in all the air pollutants except between SO
and affective disorder and between PM
and schizophrenia. In addition, we found that air pollution exhibited stronger effects for males and adults (≥18 years).

Acute exposure to air pollution, especially NO
, might be an important trigger of mental disorders.
Acute exposure to air pollution, especially NO2, might be an important trigger of mental disorders.203 road dust samples were conducted across China covering 28 provinces from January to February,2016 to comprehensively investigates the occurrence, distribution and human exposure of 21 phthalic esters (PAEs). The concentration of Σ21PAEs in road dust ranged from 2.3 to 531 mg/kg, with a mean concentration of 64.1 ± 57.2 mg/kg. DEHP, DnBP and DiBP were the dominant components accounting for 63.3-97.9% (mean 92.1%) of the Σ21PAEs. Significant Pearson correlation (r = 0.51, p less then 0.0001) between Σ21PAEs concentrations and longitude demonstrated a distinguished geographical trend. Higher concentration of PAEs in sidewalk (SW) and trunk road (TR) may reflect influence of human activities such as shoe wear and traffic load. Significant differences were found among different human activities area (urban commercial, urban residential, and suburbs/rural). For total daily intake of Ʃ21PAEs via street dust, children had the highest exposure risk followed by teenagers and adults with the median values of 160.8, 43.6, and 37.7 ng/kg-bw/day, respectively. The maximum exposure risk of PAEs calculated based on measurement and simulation were all far below reference values. The sensitivity analysis results demonstrated that concentrations, ingestion rate (IR) and fraction of PAEs absorbed in the skin (AF) were most important parameters on the assessment of exposure risk of PAEs via street dust. Specific parameters based on China and Chinses population is needed to obtain more reliable exposure risk via street dust. The interaction of antioxidants with biological membranes is closely related with their efficacy to inhibit the lipid peroxidation, the cause of several pathologies including cancer, neurodegenerative and cardiovascular disorders. Despite being pointed as a promising antioxidant agent by some authors, the anti-lipid peroxidation of green tea extract (GTE) has not aroused consensus among the scientific community. Since the interaction of drugs with biological membranes plays a key role on their therapeutic activity, this study aims to evaluate the interaction of GTE with liposomes as in vitro biomembrane models composed of 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine phospholipids in the absence and presence of cholesterol (CHOL) (15 mol%). The affinity of GTE and its main components (-)-epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) and (-)-epigallocatechin (EGC) to the lipid bilayer, their membrane location as well as their effect on the membrane fluidity was investigated by diverse biophysical techniques. Derivative spectrophotometry results proved that GTE has high affinity to the membrane by establishing hydrophobic interactions with the non-polar region of phospholipids and electrostatic interactions with the polar phospholipid heads. Fluorescence and dynamic light scattering data confirm that GTE is located in both hydrophobic and hydrophilic regions of the lipid membrane, therefore affecting the structure of the biomembrane by increasing its fluidity. However, the increased stiffness and organization of the lipid bilayer caused by CHOL significantly affected the interaction of GTE with the membrane. Moreover, the obtained findings suggest a direct contribution of EGCG and EGC on the GTE-membrane interaction.Permeation enhancers (PEs) are compounds aimed to increase intestinal uptake of oral drugs with poor bioavailability. This mini-review focuses on results recently obtained with PEs using an intestinal organ culture model. The model predicts which paracellular/transcellular pathways across the epithelium are susceptible to different classes of PEs (mainly surfactants and cell penetrating peptides). Diphenyleneiodonium mouse PEs 1) generate a transmembrane transcellular pathway, 2) block apical endocytosis (first step in apical-to-basolateral transcytosis), and 3) perturb normal cell membrane integrity. The results argue that surfactants and cell penetrating peptides are not suitable for use in formulations aimed to exploit transcytosis in oral drug delivery.Multimorbidity (MM) is a widespread problem and it poses unsolved issues like the healthcare professionals' training. A training curriculum has been proposed, but it has not been sufficiently explored in a clinical context. The eMULTIPAP course is part of the MULTIPAP complex intervention, applied through a pragmatic controlled, cluster randomized clinical trial to general practitioners (GP) and his/her patients with MM with 12 months follow-up. link2 The eMULTIPAP course is based on problem-based learning, constructivism and Ariadne principles. It has been assessed according to the Kirkpatrick model and has shown knowledge improvement and high applicability of learning with more motivation to consider MM in the clinical practice. It has also improved the Medication Appropriateness Index at 6-months and at 12- months. We conclude that the eMULTIPAP course generates significant changes in GP's learning, enhancing clinical practice in multimorbidity scenarios. The compound cis-1,2-dihydrocatechol (DHC) is highly valuable since it finds wide application in the production of fine chemicals and bioactive compounds with medical relevance. The biotechnological process to generate DHC involves a dearomatizing dihydroxylation reaction catalyzed by toluene dioxygenase (TDO) from P. putida F1, employing benzene as substrate. We aimed to enhance the biotechnological E. coli BW25113 platform for DHC production by identifying the key operational parameters positively influencing the final isolated yield. Thereby, we observed an unreported downstream reaction, generating catechol from DHC, affecting, in a negative manner, the final titer for the product. Expression temperature for the TDO-system showed to have the highest influence in terms of final isolated yield. A KEIO-collection-based screening approach highlighted glycerol dehydrogenase (GldA) as the main responsible enzyme for the undesired reaction. We transferred the TDO-system to E. coli BW25113 ΔgldA and applied the enhanced operational set-up on it. This enhanced platform enabled the production of 1.41 g L-1 DHC in isolated yield, which represents a two-fold increase compared with the starting working conditions. To our knowledge, this is the highest DHC production accomplished in recombinant E. coli at semi-preparative scale, providing a robust and accessible biotechnological platform for DHC synthesis.Epigenetic pharmacotherapy for CNS-related diseases is a burgeoning area of research. In particular, members of the bromodomain and extra-terminal domain (BET) family of proteins have emerged as intriguing therapeutic targets due to their putative involvement in an array of brain diseases. With their ability to bind to acetylated histones and act as a scaffold for chromatin modifying complexes, BET proteins were originally thought of as passive epigenetic 'reader' proteins. However, new research depicts a more complex reality where BET proteins act as key nodes in lineage-specific and signal-dependent transcriptional mechanisms to influence disease-relevant functions. link3 Amid a recent wave of drug development efforts from basic scientists and pharmaceutical companies, BET inhibitors are currently being studied in several CNS-related disease models, but safety and tolerability remain a concern. Here we review the progress in understanding the neurobiological mechanisms of BET proteins and the therapeutic potential of targeting BET proteins for brain health and disease.
