In this study, we addressed the problem of contactless estimation of RR and classification of RP of one person or two persons in a confined space under realistic conditions. We used three impulse radio ultrawideband (IR-UWB) radars and a 3D depth camera (Kinect) to avoid any blind spot in the room and to ensure that at least one of the radars covers the monitored subjects. This article proposes a subject localization and radar selection algorithm using a Kinect camera to allow the measurement of the respiration of multiple people placed at random locations. Several different experiments were conducted to verify the algorithms proposed in this work. The mean absolute error (MAE) between the estimated RR and reference RR of one-subject and two-subjects RR estimation are 0.61±0.53 breaths/min and 0.68±0.24 breaths/min, respectively. A respiratory pattern classification algorithm combining feature-based random forest classifier and pattern discrimination algorithm was developed to classify different respiration patterns including eupnea, Cheyne-Stokes respiration, Kussmaul respiration and apnea. The overall classification accuracy of 90% was achieved on a test dataset. A total of 312 ducks at 21-day-age were equally divided into 4 groups, fed with control diet, control diet supplemented of 3, 6, or 12% ramie powder, respectively. The results showed that dietary supplementation of 6 and 12% ramie powder increased the final weight and daily body weight gain (P less then 0.05), and dietary supplementation of 6% ramie improved the cooking loss of the leg meat 45-mins-postmortem compared with the control group (P less then 0.05). This experiment demonstrated that dietary supplementation of ramie powder showed beneficial efficacy on the growth performance of Linwu ducks. It corroborated the potential of dietary ramie being used as poultry feed ingredient and suggested that 6% was the proper supplementation rate of ramie powder in Linwu ducks' feed.Two experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of induced moisture loss on embryonic development and the immune response following an inflammatory challenge immediately post-hatch. In Experiment I, fertile leghorn eggs (n = 100) and commercial broiler eggs (n = 300) were set at 37.5°C and moisture loss was induced in one-half of the Leghorn and broiler eggs by drilling two, 1.5 mm diameter holes. The Control eggs had 0 holes. At embryonic day (ED)18, layer and broiler eggs in the 2-holes treatment had a significant (P less then 0.01) increase in moisture loss compared to the control treatment (10.1% vs. 8.2%). Thymocytes from both the leghorn (104%) and broiler (62%) embryos in the 2-holes treatment had significantly increased in vitro proliferation compared with the control embryos (P ≤ 0.05). At ED18, layer and broiler embryos in the 2-hoximately twofold higher splenic CD8+/CD4+ ratio and 1.5 fold increase in CD4+CD25+ percentage compared to control chicks (P ≤ 0.05). In chicks hatched from the 2-holes treatment, MUC2 mRNA transcription was comparable to control chicks at 24 and 48 h in response to the LPS challenge. Our data suggest that the 2-holes treatment reprograms gene transcription to facilitate cell survival via proliferation and differentiation during an LPS inflammatory challenge.
In patients with hip fracture on direct oral anti-coagulants (DOACs), timely surgery is important in optimising outcomes but the safety of early surgery is unclear. This study aims to evaluate the timing of surgery on peri- and post-operative outcomes in patients with hip fracture on DOAC therapy.

Single-centre, retrospective, population-based cohort study of patients on DOAC therapy compared to standard care with low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) undergoing surgery for hip fracture. Data obtained patient demographics, fracture classification, American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) classification, time to surgery, procedure performed, type of DOAC, timing of last DOAC dose, use of reversal agents or pro-coagulants and length of stay. Outcomes assessed pre- and post-operative haemoglobin levels, incidence of blood transfusion, major haemorrhage, venous thromboembolism (VTE) and death within 30 days of surgery.

A total of 755 patients were included. Compared to standard treatment, DOAC use was associated with a similar change in pre- and post-operative haemoglobin levels (
= .90), risk of blood transfusion (RR 1.04, 95% CI .70-1.54, P = .84), haemorrhage (RR 1.51, 95% CI .53-4.28, P = .44), VTE (RR .92, 95% CI .12-7.20,
= .94) and mortality (RR 1.85, 95% CI .89-3.84,
= .10), all of which were independent of the timing of surgery.

Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children is a post-viral inflammatory syndrome that temporally follows coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Symptoms may include fever, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, skin rash and other signs of inflammation. In Canada, MIS-C is rare, with 269 cases reported to the Public Health Agency of Canada between March 11, 2020 and October 2, 2021. One hundred forty-two (53%) of these cases were lab-confirmed COVID-19 cases or epidemiologically-linked with COVID-19 cases. Cases have been reported in infants as young as one week to youth as old as 18 years, with a median age of six years. Cases were more likely to occur in males than females (58% vs 42%, respectively; p=0.006). Almost all MIS-C cases (99%) required hospitalization and 36% required intensive care unit admission. No deaths have been reported to date.
