This study aims to present the clinical characteristics of 30 hospitalized cases with epileptic seizures and coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19).

This is a retrospective observational research study. Clinical data were extracted from electronic medical records in 1550 patients with a laboratory-confirmed diagnosis of COVID-19, who were hospitalized in Wuhan Central Hospital, China, from 1 January to 31 April 2020. 30 COVID-19 patients with the diagnosis of epilepsy were enrolled. The clinical characteristics, complications, treatments, and clinical outcomes of 30 cases were collected and analyzed.

Of 30 patients with a diagnosis of epilepsy and COVID-19, 13 patients (43.4%) had new-onset epileptic seizures without an epilepsy history(new-onset seizure group, NS group), ten patients(33.3%) had an epilepsy history with a recurrent epileptic seizure (recurrent seizure group, RS group) and seven patients(23.3%) had an epilepsy history but no seizure during the course of COVID-19 (epilepsy history group, EH gents with epilepsy history continue using AEDs during COVID-19 pandemics, the risk of recurrent seizure may be reduced, and a good prognosis for patients with epilepsy history could be expected.
This systematic review aims to qualitatively synthesize existing evidence on the efficacy of HIV interventions in African fishing communities.

Five databases (NCBI PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science Core Collection, The Cochrane Library, and CABI Global Health Database) were searched in March 2019 for eligible studies. All peer-reviewed papers with a defined HIV intervention explicitly mentioning African fishing communities were included. Outcomes included any measure of the efficacy of HIV interventions.

Of 22,289 search results, data was extracted from 25 eligible studies that passed critical appraisal; seven involved HIV prevention, six HIV testing and counseling, three treatment, and nine combinations of more than one intervention. Findings include a high coverage of safe male circumcision (SMC) but low condom use among fisher folk, and a preference for PrEP over other HIV prevention services. Uptake of HIV testing and ART coverage are below levels required to reach UNAIDS 90-90-90 targets, and there is hard-to-reach populations. Our findings will inform future HIV service provision in fishing communities.
The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of respiratory virus infections, including severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), during the winter period December 2019 to March 2020, via a tertiary care hospital-based survey in Parma, Northern Italy.

A total of 906 biological samples from the respiratory tract were analysed by both conventional assays (including culture) and molecular assays targeting nucleic acids of SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory viruses.

Overall, 474 samples (52.3%) were positive for at least one virus, with a total of 583 viruses detected. Single infections were detected in 380 (80.2%) samples and mixed infections were detected in 94 (19.8%). Respiratory syncytial virus (138/583, 23.7%) and rhinovirus (130/583, 22.3%) were the most commonly identified viruses, followed by SARS-CoV-2 (82/583, 14.1%). Respiratory syncytial virus predominated until February, with 129 detections; it then decreased drastically in March to only nine detections. SARS-CoV-2 was absent in the study area until February 26, 2020 and then reached 82 detections in just over a month. SARS-CoV-2 was found in mixed infections in only three cases, all observed in children younger than 1 year old.

The surface morphology and electrochemical behavior of the electrode were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and cyclic voltammetry. The electrode presented a very thin layer of conductive ink (16.0 ± 0.7 µm) on a large effective surface area (0.301 ± 0.001 cm-2). The anodic peak current density (jpa) of acetaminophen (ACT) in FGWE was 5.2, 3.7, 3.5 and 6.0 times greater than the jpa of glassy carbon electrode (GCE), flexible carbon working electrode (FCWE), SPE1, and SPE2, respectively. The electrochemical performance of FGWE toward ACT was evaluated by differential pulse voltammetry. Under optimized condition, ACT was quantified in a range of 4-100 µM, with good sensitivity, good accuracy (recovery = 82.3 ± 0.4 to 106 ± 3%), and excellent precision. FGWE was applied to determine ACT in commercial pharmaceutical formulations. The results of the study are in good agreement with those obtained by the standard spectrophotometric method. These results indicate that disposable FGWE is particularly useful for the detection of ACT, and its performance may serve as a platform for cost-effective flexible electrochemical sensors.
Computer fluid dynamics simulations of dynamic wetting are often performed using a slip model on the substrate. In previous studies, the generalized Navier boundary condition (GNBC) has shown promising results and could help clear the gap between molecular and continuum scales, but lacks quantitative comparisons to experiments. We seek to investigate the dependence between the contact-line velocity and the slip length in a GNBC, by confronting numerical simulations to experimental data.

The physical properties of a molten polymer (polyethylene glycol) were assessed thoroughly. Its dynamic contact angle on a cellulosic substrate was measured carefully using the Wilhelmy method. The experiment was reproduced in a finite elements model using a GNBC. It was repeated for capillary numbers between 10

Herein, we explored the accumulation of arsenate in lettuce treated with different concentrations of arsenate and studied the effects of HA on the accumulation and toxicity of arsenate. The addition of HA did not cause significant changes in the arsenate content in lettuce but had a significant effect on the activity of antioxidant enzymes, which improved the antioxidant capability of the lettuce plants. However, little is known regarding ongoing or recent clinical trials in China. We analyzed data from clinical trials published before December 31, 2019, and found that the annual registration numbers are increasing annually in the country. Based on clinical indications, most tested drugs target cancers, nervous system, infections, and the cardiovascular system. Furthermore, clinical trials are mostly concentrated in Beijing, Shanghai, and Jiangsu, and conducted by large pharmaceutical companies, with multiple trials for several generic drugs. Going forward, it will be necessary to promote R&D in China of clinically relevant innovative drugs, drug delivery systems, and novel traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and biological products, as well as to have a balanced distribution of clinical trials to sustainably meet public health needs.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) carrying Panton-Valentine leukocidin, a pore-forming toxin, is a common cause of necrotizing pneumonia. However, the early pulmonary inflammatory response following PVL(+) MRSA infection is unknown. The purpose of this study was to use a murine model to determine the effect of PVL(+) MRSA on lung tissues and the expression of cytokines and JAK and STAT mRNA and protein.

Mice were randomly divided into 3 groups and intra-nasally treated with PBS (control group), recombinant PVL (rPVL group), and PVL(+) MRSA (PVL group). At 24 and 48h after inoculation, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was tested for cytokine levels, and lung tissues were tested for JAK and STAT mRNA and protein expression, and examined after hematoxylin and eosin staining.

Mice infected with the PVL(+) strain became ill, characterized by impaired mobility, hunched posture, ruffled fur, and labored breathing. Lung tissue exhibited tissue necrosis and hemorrhage. BALF levels of IL-8, TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-12, sICAM-1, and sVCAM-1 were increased in the rPVL or PVL groups, while levels of IL-10 and IL-4 levels were similar among the groups. JAK1 and STAT1 mRNA expression and protein levels were increased in lung tissue from mice infected with PVL(+) MRSA and rPVL.

PVL is a significant S. aureus virulence factor, and upregulates the expression of proinflammatory cytokines but does not affect the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines. The effect of PVL may be due to JAK/STAT pathway activation. Blockade of the JAK/STAT pathway may decrease the severity of PVL(+) MRSA pneumonia.
