The results thus show that despite an initial enhancement, the continuous exposure to Ag caused a severe impairment of the antioxidant defense capacity in C. elegans.Previous research reports that diet is the main source of phthalate exposure to adolescents, and phthalate is associated with adolescent mental and behavioral problems. However, no study has explored the moderating effects of eating behavior in this association. This study aimed to analyze the moderating effects of plastic packaged food consumption in the longitudinal association between phthalate metabolite concentration and emotional symptoms in adolescents. This school-based survey was carried out among adolescents in two Chinese provinces. We conducted a baseline and follow-up surveys for 893 freshmen using the purposive sampling method from December 2018 to November 2019. We used food frequency questionnaire to assess eating behavior. The Chinese version of 21-item Depression Anxiety Stress Scales was used to assess emotional symptoms, and high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was used to analyze the concentration of six urine phthalate metabolites. The results of latent moderation model indicated that plastic packaged food consumption moderated the association of low molecular weight phthalate (LMWP) with depressive symptoms (β = 0.27, P = 0.002), anxiety symptoms (β = 0.89, P less then 0.01), and stress symptoms (β = 0.23, P = 0.019). The moderating effects were significant at the higher scores (β = 0.14-0.35, P less then 0.05) and/or the lower scores (β = -0.35 to -0.12, P less then 0.05) of plastic packaged food consumption. The results suggest that plastic packaged food consumption to some extent moderates the longitudinal association of phthalate exposure with emotional symptoms in adolescents.Flurochloridone (FLC), a selective herbicide used on a global scale, has been reported to have male reproductive toxicity which underlying mechanism is still largely unknown. The present study was conducted to determine the effects of FLC on Sertoli cell and explore its mechanism by using normal mouse Sertoli (TM4) cell line. Our data indicate that FLC suppressed proliferation of TM4 cells in a dose- and time-dependent manner. Further studies confirmed that FLC induced apoptosis in TM4 cells, accompanied by reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, intracellular calcium increase, opening of mitochondrial permeability transition pore, depolarization of the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and decrease of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) level. Meanwhile, changes of B-cell lymphoma-2 (Bcl-2) family proteins expression, release of cytochrome c and the activation of caspase-9 and caspase-3 were also confirmed. These results indicate that FLC induces TM4 cells apoptosis through the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway. In addition, pretreatment with ROS scavenger N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), could significantly alleviate FLC-induced TM4 cells apoptosis and MMP depolarization. In conclusion, our results suggested that FLC induced TM4 cells apoptosis and it was regulated by mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stresses.
Failures in communication are a leading contributor to medical error. There is increasing attention on cultivating robust communication practices in the Operating Room (OR) to mitigate against patient injury and optimize efficient patient care. Few studies have evaluated how surgical equipment may introduce barriers to team dynamics.
We conducted a pilot observational study to examine the relationship between anesthesia screen drapes (which are used inconsistently) and the frequency of verbal exchanges between surgical and anesthesia members. 25 procedures spanning various procedures in Otolaryngology were covertly observed, 12 of which employed a screen. Verbal exchanges were recorded across three stages of the surgery pre-procedure (before the draping), procedure (drapes placed throughout) and post-procedure (after the removal of the draping). Speaker and content of the exchange was noted as well as various features about the procedure.
Decreases in rates of exchanges were most pronounced during the procedure stage, although they did not reach significance on T-testing (p=0.0719). After controlling for attending, table orientation and number of professionals, regression analysis did reveal a statistically significant decrease in rates of verbal exchanges during the procedure in the presence of the anesthesia screen (7.17 (± 6.33) versus 2.23 (± 1.00), p=0.0318). Differences were also significant among surgeon-initiated and patient-care-related exchanges (p=0.0168 and p=0.0432, respectively). Decreases in anesthesiologist-initiated and non-clinical exchanges did not reach significance (p=0.1530 and p=0.5120, respectively).
This pilot study suggests that anesthesia screens may negatively impact communication practices in the OR.

To evaluate the frequency and types of humoral immunodeficiencies (HID) in pediatric and adult patients with recurrent (RARS). Patients with HID commonly present with upper respiratory tract infections. Their pathophysiology in children is different than adult counterparts. It is unknown how HID affects those two age groups.
We performed a retrospective chart review of pediatric (<18years old) and adult (18years and older) patients who were evaluated in our pediatric and adult rhinology clinic between July 2010 and December 2020 and had the diagnosis of recurrent (>3 times/year) rhinosinusitis. Patients with cystic fibrosis, Aspirin Exacerbated Respiratory Disease (AERD), and ciliary dyskinesia were excluded. Demographic data and associated conditions were reviewed. Immunologic evaluation included complete blood cell count (CBC) with differential, serum immunoglobulin G, A, and M levels, and baseline and post-vaccination pneumococcal antibody titers.
There were 135 patients who met the inclusion criteria. 86 patients (63.7%) were children, 49 patients (36.3%) were adults. 46.5% of the pediatric patients and 45% of the adult patients were female. 17.4% of children had abnormal immunologic findings 8 had hypogammaglobulinemia (p<0.0001), 2 had specific antibody deficiency (SAD), and 5 had selective IgA deficiency. 32.7% of adults (p<0.0001) had abnormal immunologic findings 4 had hypogammaglobulinemia, 11 had SAD (p<0.0001), and 1 patient had both IgA deficiency and SAD.
Humoral immunodeficiency, specifically SAD, seems to be more common in adult versus pediatric RARS that is refractory to treatment.

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether combined Induction chemotherapy (IC) with concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) for stage III or IV locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (LA-NPC) could achieve better survival benefits than CCRT alone.
Only randomized controlled trials were included in this study. There were two treatment regiments (IC+CCRT and CCRT alone) recruited for analysis. The end points of this meta-analysis were overall survival (OS), locoregional recurrence-free survival (LRFS), and distant metastases-free survival (DMFS). Then we performed a traditional meta-analysis.
Seven studies were included, including 2628 patients. Compared with using CCRT alone, IC+CCRT has better effects on overall survival (OS) [HR=0.75, 95% CI=0.63-0.89], locoregional recurrence-free survival (LRFS) [HR=0.70, 95% CI=0.56-0.86] and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) [HR=0.65, 95% CI=0.54-0.78]. Of note, the addition of IC also increases the incidence of toxic reactions and patient discomfort.
IC+CCRT provided better survival benefits than CCRT alone. However, patients also had a higher incidence of toxic reactions with combination therapy.

Recent studies suggest endocrine disrupting effects of glyphosate. Specifically, in our work in rodents, low-dose early-life exposure to Roundup® (glyphosate-based herbicide) lengthened anogenital distance (AGD) in male and female offspring. AGD is a marker of the prenatal hormone milieu in rodents and humans. The relationship between glyphosate exposure and AGD has not been studied in humans. We conducted a pilot study in 94 mother-infant pairs (45 female and 49 male) from The Infant Development and the Environment Study (TIDES). For each infant, two AGD measurements were collected after birth; the anopenile (AGD-AP) and anoscrotal (AGD-AS) distances for males, and anoclitoral (AGD-AC) and anofourchette distances (AGD-AF) for females. We measured levels of glyphosate and its degradation product aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) in 2nd trimester maternal urine samples using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatograptal effects on endocrine and reproductive systems. This study was conducted with 39 inpatients diagnosed with IBD in the gastroenterology department of Samsun Ondokuz Mayis University Health Application and Research Center to evaluate the relationship between chronotype and biochemical findings, nutrition, and gastrointestinal symptoms in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The data were collected using a general information form, Food Frequency Questionnaire, Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale, and Morning-Evening Questionnaire. The biochemical findings of the patients were obtained from the medical records. Statistical analysis of the patients included in the study was performed with the SPSS package program. For all analyses, p less then 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Indoximod solubility dmso Twenty-eight patients were diagnosed with ulcerative colitis and 11 with Crohn's disease. There was a significant relationship between chronotype and daily polyunsaturated fatty acid and vitamin B6 intake in female subjects (p less then 0.05). There was also a significant relationship between chronotype and percentage of carbohydrate consumed, polyunsaturated and saturated fatty acid intake in male subjects (p less then 0.05). A significant relationship was found between chronotype and serum glucose, hematocrit, magnesium, and iron levels (p less then 0.05). It was determined that while E-type had higher glucose and magnesium levels; M-type had higher hematocrit and iron levels. It was observed that there was a relationship between chronotype and biochemical findings and nutrition in patients with IBD. Chronotype is easy to determine and these results show that it should be considered as a factor when evaluating nutrition and clinical status in patients with IBD.
Researchers have proposed that impaired sleep may be a causal link in the progression from Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) to Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Several recent findings suggest that enhancing deep sleep (N3) may improve neurological health in persons with MCI, and buffer the risk for AD. Specifically, Transcranial Electrical Stimulation (TES) of frontal brain areas, the inferred source of the Slow Oscillations (SOs) of N3 sleep, can extend N3 sleep duration and improve declarative memory for recently learned information. Recent work in our laboratory using dense array Electroencephalography (dEEG) localized the sources of SOs to anterior limbic sites - suggesting that targeting these sites with TES may be more effective for enhancing N3.
For the present study, we recruited 13 healthy adults (M=42 years) to participate in three all-night sleep EEG recordings where they received low level (0.5mA) TES designed to target anterior limbic areas and a sham stimulation (placebo). We used a convolutional neural network, trained and tested on professionally scored EEG sleep staging, to predict sleep stages for each recording.
