In addition, by employing density functional theory (DFT), insights into the various vibrational states dictating the dielectric function model and the intriguing optical properties of α-MoO3 are provided.New findings What is the central question of this study? Does passive heat acclimation alter glomerular filtration rate and urine-concentrating ability in response to passive heat stress? What is the main finding and its importance? Glomerular filtration rate remained unchanged after passive heat stress, and heat acclimation did not alter this response. However, heat acclimation mitigated the reduction in urine-concentrating ability and reduced the incidence of albuminuria in young healthy adults after passive heat stress. CA-074 methyl ester Collectively, these results suggest that passive heat acclimation might improve structural integrity and reduce glomerular permeability during passive heat stress. Abstract Little is known about the effect of heat acclimation on kidney function during heat stress. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of passive heat stress and subsequent passive heat acclimation on markers of kidney function. Twelve healthy adults (seven men and five women; 26 ± 5 years of age; 72.7 ± 8.6 kn 0.03) but not sodium (P = 0.13) or chloride (P = 0.20). Lastly, heat acclimation reduced the fractional incidence of albuminuria after passive heating (before, 58 ± 51%; after, 8 ± 29%; P = 0.03). Collectively, these results demonstrate that passive heat stress does not alter the glomerular filtration rate. However, heat acclimation might improve urine-concentrating ability and filtration within the glomerulus."3-Point annulations", or ''phenalenannulations" transform a benzene ring directly into a substituted pyrene by "wrapping" two new cycles around the perimeter of the central ring at three consecutive carbon atoms. This efficient, modular, and general method for p-extension opens access to non- symmetric pyrenes and their expanded analogues. Potentially, this approach can convert any aromatic ring bearing a -CH 2 Br or a -CHO group into a pyrene moiety. Depending upon the workup choices, the process can be directed towards either tin- or iodo-substituted product formation, giving complementary choices for further various cross-coupling reactions. The two-directional bis-double annulation adds two new polyaromatic extensions with a total of six new aromatic rings at a central core.Networks of mutualistic interactions between animals and plants are considered a pivotal part of ecological communities. However, mutualistic networks are rarely studied from the perspective of species-specific roles, and it remains to be established whether those animal species more relevant for network structure also contribute more to the ecological functions derived from interactions. Here, we relate the contribution to seed dispersal of vertebrate species with their topological role in frugivore-plant interaction networks. For one year in two localities with remnant patches of Colombian tropical dry forest, we sampled abundance, morphology, behaviour and fruit consumption from fleshy-fruited plants of various frugivore species. We assessed the network topological role of each frugivore species by integrating their degree of generalization in interactions with plants with their contributions to network nestedness and modularity. We estimated the potential contribution of each frugivore species to communitel link between structure and function is due to the fact that the occurrence of frugivore-plant interactions depends largely on the characteristics of the frugivore involved, which also condition its ultimate role in seed dispersal.Hypotaurine (HT) is a routine component of porcine embryo culture medium, functioning as an antioxidant, but its requirement may be diminished as most embryo culture systems now use 5% O2 instead of atmospheric (20%) O2 . Our objective was to determine the effects of removing HT from the culture medium on porcine preimplantation embryo development. Embryos cultured in 20% O2 without HT had decreased blastocyst development compared to culture with HT or in 5% O2 with or without HT. Notably, differences in blastocyst development or total cell number were not detected between embryos cultured in 5% O2 with or without HT. After culture in 5% O2 without HT and embryo transfer, healthy fetuses were retrieved from two pregnancies on Day 42, confirming in vivo developmental competence. Transcript abundance of proapoptotic markers was decreased in embryos cultured without HT regardless of oxygen tension; however, assays for apoptosis did not demonstrate differences between groups. Additionally, no differences were observed in the development or apoptosis of somatic cell nuclear transfer-derived embryos cultured in 5% O2 with or without HT. With decreased utility in 5% O2 , removing HT from porcine embryo culture medium would also have economic advantages because it is undoubtedly the most expensive component.Water electrolysis is a promising strategy for high-purity hydrogen production but restrained by the high electricity cost. Developing an oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst with excellent activity and low price is indispensable for reducing water electrolysis cost. The modulation of electronic structure of catalysts can be an efficient strategy to boost their activities. Herein, the oxygen vacancies of defective iron-cobalt oxide (FeCoO x -Vo) nanosheets are modified by the homogeneously distributed sulfur (S) atoms. S atoms can not only effectively stabilize oxygen vacancies (Vo), but also form the Co-S coordination with Co active site in the Vo, which can modulate the electronic structure of the active site, enabling FeCoO x -Vo-S to exhibit much superior OER activity. Remarkably, FeCoO x -Vo-S exhibits a mass activity of 2440.0 A g -1 at the voltage of 1.5 V vs. RHE in 1.0 M KOH, which is 25.4 times higher than that of RuO 2 (96.0 A g -1 ). Meanwhile, its Tafel slope can as low as 21.0 mV dec -1 , indicative of its excellent charge transfer rate. When FeCoO x -Vo-S (anode catalyst) is paired with the defective CoP 3 /Ni 2 P (cathode catalyst) for overall water splitting, the current densities can be achieved as high as 249.0 mA cm -2 and 406.0 mA cm -2 at the cell voltage of 2.0 V and 2.3 V, respectively, which meet well the requirement of industrial water splitting.Streptococcus pneumoniae is a major human pathogen that must adapt to unique nutritional environments in several host niches. The pneumococcus can metabolize a range of carbohydrates that feed into glycolysis ending in pyruvate, which is catabolized by several enzymes. We investigated how the pneumococcus utilizes these enzymes to metabolize different carbohydrates and how this impacts survival in the host. Loss of ldh decreased bacterial burden in the nasopharynx and enhanced bacteremia in mice. Loss of spxB, pdhC or pfl2 decreased bacteremia and increased host survival. In glucose or galactose, loss of ldh increased capsule production, whereas loss of spxB and pdhC reduced capsule production. The pfl2 mutant exhibited reduced capsule production only in galactose. In glucose, pyruvate was metabolized primarily by LDH to generate lactate and NAD+ and by SpxB and PDHc to generate acetyl-CoA. In galactose, pyruvate metabolism was shunted toward acetyl-CoA production. The majority of acetyl-CoA generated by PFL was used to regenerate NAD+ with a subset used in capsule production, while the acetyl-CoA generated by SpxB and PDHc was utilized primarily for capsule biosynthesis. These data suggest that the pneumococcus can alter flux of pyruvate metabolism dependent on the carbohydrate present to succeed in distinct host niches.Introduction Cancer patients and caregivers have myriad unmet needs which can have detrimental consequences on their psychosocial wellbeing. This systematic review aims to identify the unmet supportive care needs of immigrant and native Chinese cancer patients and caregivers. Methods We systematically searched various electronic databases (e.g. Scopus, CINAHL, PsycInfo, etc.) from the earliest date available until January 2018. Additional studies were identified through reference lists and citation tracking. Eligibility criteria included (a) qualitative, quantitative and/or mixed methods studies published in English; (b) immigrant and native Chinese cancer patients and/or caregivers (age ≥18 years); (c) unmet needs and/or their correlates. Studies were assessed for their risk of bias, and a narrative synthesis of findings was performed. Results Forty-seven papers from 45 studies met eligibility criteria. The most prevalent area of unmet needs was health system and information. Patients most commonly desired one member of the hospital to talk to about all aspects of their care. Caregivers preferred information about the patient's prognosis and likely outcome. Anxiety was most commonly associated with higher levels of health system and information needs. Conclusion Chinese patients and caregivers experience a range of unmet health system and information needs, which differ depending on their stage along the cancer trajectory. Objective This study examined the prevalence of self-perceived burden (SPB) and its association with health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among urologic cancer patients. Methods This was a prospective, cross-sectional study. A total of 429 respondents diagnosed with urologic cancers (prostate, bladder and renal cancer) from Sarawak General Hospital and Subang Jaya Medical Centre in Malaysia were interviewed by using a structured questionnaire. SPB and HRQoL were measured by the Self-perceived Burden Scale and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General 7 Item Scale respectively. Results and conclusion Self-perceived burden was experienced by 73.2% of the respondents. Respondents who had a lower education level, a monthly household income less then MYR 5,000, monthly household expenditures less then MYR 3,000 or whose Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status (ECOG-PS) rating was higher and who faced medium to high subjective financial toxicity (FT) were more likely to experience low HRQoL, but not SPB, after adjustment for covariates. As medium to high subjective FT is significantly associated with high SPB and low HRQoL, future interventions should be prioritised to address subjective FT, which, in turn, would reduce SPB and improve HRQoL.Introduction Research has shown that social support has a significant impact on quality of life. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to determine the relationship between perceived social support, perception of disease and quality of life, and the factors affecting these, in patients with cancer in Turkey. Methods The study data were collected from two hospitals. Data were collected using the face-to-face interview method from patients diagnosed with cancer between March and August 2018. No sampling was performed, and the entire population was studied. Results The mean age of the patients in the study was 61.37 ± 14.89 years. Married patients had better social support than single individuals (t = 2.129; p = 0.035). Significant negative correlation was found between the illness perception scale and total quality of life scale score (r = -0.163; p = 0.026), and physical well-being (r = -0.224; p = 0.002) and social well-being (r = -0.199; p = 0.006) subscales. Conclusion Patients' social support and quality of life were at moderate levels.
