To report a case of bilateral serous retinal detachments in a patient with preeclampsia without hypertension using multimodal ophthalmic imaging.

Case report.

This case demonstrates the rare presentation of bilateral serous retinal detachment in a patient with preeclampsia without hypertension. Characteristic subretinal fluid was seen on exam and optical coherence tomography. No leakage was noted on fluorescein angiography. Treatment was deferred and the subretinal fluid resolved within 3 weeks.

Practitioners should be aware of the rare presentation of serous retinal detachments in preeclampsia, even in the absence of hypertension. Long term sequelae are uncommon and usually only seen in severe disease. Delivery should be considered once serous retinal detachment develops.

To describe the racial and gender distribution in antiseizure medications (ASM) clinical trials using a systemic review of clinical trial registry database.

We searched ClinicalTrials.gov database for ASM trials registered from September 1988 to January 2019. All randomized and non-randomized trials investigating ASM for epilepsy were included. Trials with intervention other than ASM or condition other than epilepsy were excluded. Data on age, race, ethnicity, and gender were extracted directly from database and from published data where available. Study location, trial identifier, year of completion, and funding sources were also collected. Meta-analysis of proportions was conducted using R software.

Two hundred and thirty studies conducted globally with 39,576 participants were included. Overall, there are 53 % male on all registered ASM studies globally. For trials conducted in the United States (61 studies/5126 participants), 52 % of the participants were male with the following weighted racial distparities of all minorities including Black participants was more notable over time and in studies sponsored by industry. Generalizability of ASM clinical trials to certain subgroups should be further examined.Salvia species are frequently used in traditional medicine and are a source of diterpenoid antioxidants. In this study, the hydroperoxide radical scavenging activity of seven known abietane diterpenoids (ADs), isolated from Salvia barrelieri, are investigated using a quantum chemical approach. The ADs are 7-oxoroyleanone-12-methyl ether (1), 7a-acetoxyroyleanone-12-methyl ether (2), royleanone (3), horminone (4), 7-acetylhorminone (5), cryptojaponol (6), and inuroyleanol (7). It was found that formal hydrogen transfer is the main mechanism of the antiradical activity of these ADs in nonpolar environments, whereas the single electron transfer mechanism of anion states is favored in aqueous environment. The antioxidant activity of compounds 1-5 involves H-abstraction at the C7(15)-H bonds whereas for the compounds 6 and 7 the H abstraction takes place at the O12-H bond. The HOO• scavenging activity of compounds 1-5 is minor in all of the studied media, however 6 and 7 exhibit excellent antiradical activity in aqueous solution. Remarkably, the HOO• scavenging activity of compound 7 is substantially higher than that of Trolox, the reference antioxidant the calculated rate constant was 122.3 times higher in polar and 6.1 times higher in nonpolar environments, respectively. In this study, population differentiation in Colombian admixed, native, and Afro-descendant populations was evaluated for a group of 38 indels described for forensic use. In addition to the differences found between population groups, the results show that the set of 38 indels analysed could be useful in studies of individual identification in Colombia. The exclusion power presented by this set of markers suggests the need for joint use with other markers, being able to complement the STRs in paternity cases. Here we examined whether the pupil responds to the illusion of depth in a shape from shading task. link2 In three experiments we show that pupil size is affected by the percept of depth, so that it dilates more when participants perceive the stimulus as concave, compared to when they perceive it as convex. This only happens if participants make a judgment regarding the shape of the stimulus or when they view it passively but are aware of the different shapes. No differences in pupil size were found with passive viewing if participants were not aware of the illusion, suggesting that some aspects of shape from shading require attention. All stimuli were equiluminant, and the percept of depth was created by manipulating the orientation of the shading, so that changes in pupil size could not be accounted by changes in the amount of light in the image. We posit, and confirmed it in a behavioral control experiment, that the perception of depth is translated to a subjective perception of darkness, due to the "darker is deeper" heuristic and conclude that the pupillary physiological response reflects the subjective perception of light.
Palliative care is characterised as a holistic, interdisciplinary and humanised approach to care. It transcends the traditional bio-medical perspective in health through a bio-psycho-social and spiritual approach. Holistic point of view in palliative care is essential, and needs to be consistently hi-lighted to nursing students to improve end of life care.

To describe nursing students' experience in a palliative care unit in Santiago, Chile.

A qualitative phenomenological study utilising purposive sampling of 10 nursing students from a Chilean university was undertaken, who completed their final year in a palliative care unit between 2017 and 2019.

Data were collected using in-depth interviews, which were conducted, recorded, transcribed and analysed according to Streubert-Carpenter method. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Universidad de los Andes, Chile.

Three main themes were identified in the data with their consequent units of meaning; these were experiences from all participanntributes to student nurses' personal and professional development. It provides multiple tools related to the care of terminally-ill patients and their families. It is recommended to undergraduate nurses have the opportunity to experience palliative care throughout curriculum and that they learn to embed theory to practice.In the present study, a magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (MMIP) was synthesized for the extraction of harmaline from Peganum harmala by dispersive solid-phase microextraction (DSPME). The MMIP for selective and intelligent extraction of harmaline with excellent functionality and high selectivity was synthesized using the sol-gel method with functionalized superparamagnetic core-shell nanoparticles, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EDMA) as a cross-linker, methacrylic acid (MAA) as a functional monomer, and 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as a porogen. link3 To study the properties and morphology of the coated polymer, FT-IR spectroscopy, FESEM, TEM images, and VSM were used. The DSPME-HPLC-UV equipment was used to quantify and analyze the data obtained from harmaline extraction. In this research, the efficiency of the synthesized polymer in harmaline extraction was modeled and optimized using the response surface methodology based on central composite design (RSM-CCD). In addition, for modeling the isotherm of harmaline sorption by the MMIP, Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equations were used. The obtained results showed that the extraction of harmaline with the MMIP was well described with Freundlich isotherm. The results of the validation of the method showed that the measurement of harmaline in the concentration range of 1.0-4000 ng mL-1 followed a linear relationship (R2 = 9986.0). Moreover, the accuracy or repeatability index (% RSD) was determined to be less then 10, and the LOQ and LOD values were 0.526 and 0.158 ng mL-1, respectively. The results of this study showed that the DSPME technique by using the synthesized MMIP as an effective sorbent with high efficiency and capacity could be utilized for pre-concentration and extraction of harmaline from real and complex samples.The endangered cold-water fish species taimen (Hucho taimen) suffer acute temperature changes in culture and wild conditions. Understanding the effects of acute temperature changes on physiological processes of this species is essential for aquaculture practices and conservation. Liver transcriptomic profiles of the taimen (n = 24) exposed to acute temperature decrease (from 20 °C to 10 °C) and acute temperature increase (from 10 °C to 20 °C) was evaluated using high-throughput RNA-Sequencing. Samples were collected at day 0, 1, 7 and 35 in both treatments. Compared to day 0, the total numbers of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the taimen after acute temperature decrease were 173, 226 and 42 at day 1, 7 and 35, respectively, and the total numbers of DEGs following acute temperature increase were 260, 253 and 282 at day 1, 7 and 35, respectively. Particularly, 14 key regulatory genes were commonly found between both acute temperature treatments. Functional analysis based on the commonly identified DEGs revealed important metabolic pathways related to metabolism and immune function, suggesting a specific response mechanism of taimen against cold and heat shock.
