Nucleated red blood cells have been studied in critically ill and injured patients as a predictor of increased in-hospital mortality and poor clinical outcomes. While prior studies have demonstrated the prognostic power of nucleated red blood cells in the critical patient, there has been a paucity of literature available describing their value as a prognostic indicator in the severely burned patient.In this retrospective observational study conducted from 2012 to 2017. Inclusion criteria for the purpose of this study included all burn patients with total body surface area > 10% that were age ≥ 15 years. Demographic and clinical data collected from the electronic medical record. Data analysis consisted of descriptive and comparative analysis using SPSS.Two hundred and nineteen patients (17.5%) met inclusion criteria with 51 (23.3%) patients positive for nucleated red blood cells. The presence of nucleated red blood cells had an increased mortality rate with an odds ratio of 6.0 (p = 0.001; 2.5, 14.5), were more likely to appear in older patients (p less then 0.001), and were associated with increased hospital length of stay (p less then 0.001), injury severity scores (p less then 0.001), and complications.The presence of NRBCs even at the low concentrations reported in our study showed a 6-fold increase in the rate of mortality. With the current improvements in burn care leading to higher survival rates, the need to improve upon the numerous models that have been developed to predict mortality in severe burn patients is clear given the significantly increased risk of death the presence of NRBCs portend.
Horizontal Gene Transfer (HGT) is an important evolutionary mechanism because it transfers genetic material that may code for traits or functions, between species or genomes. It is frequent in mitochondrial and nuclear genomes but has not been demonstrated between plastid genomes of different green land plant species.

We Sanger sequenced the nuclear Internal transcribed spacers 1&2 (ITS) and the plastid rpl16 G2 intron (rpl16). In five individuals with foreign rpl16 we also sequenced atpB-rbcL and trnLUAA-trnFGAA.

We discovered 14 individuals of a moss species with typical nuclear ITS but foreign plastid rpl16, from a species of a distant lineage. None of the individuals with three plastid markers sequenced contained all foreign markers, demonstrating the transfer of plastid fragments rather than of the entire plastid genome, i.e., entire plastids were not transferred. Human kidney injury molecule 1 (hKIM-1) is a sensitive and specific marker for detection of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (CRCC), papillary renal cell carcinoma (PRCC), and ovarian clear cell carcinoma (OCCC). Its use was limited to a few surgical pathology laboratories because this specific antibody to hKIM-1 was not commercially available. We investigated the diagnostic utility of RNA in situ hybridization/RNAscope in the detection of hKIM-1 in tumors from various organs.

RNAscope for hKIM-1 was performed on 1,252 cases on tissue microarray sections, including CRCC (n = 185), PRCC (n = 59), chromophobe renal cell carcinoma (n = 18), oncocytoma (n = 12), OCCC (n = 27), and metastatic CRCC (n = 46).

Fifty-nine (100%) of 59 PRCCs, 94 (95%) of 99 low-grade CRCCs, 83 (96%) of 86 high-grade CRCCs, and 24 (89%) of 27 OCCCs, and 44 (96%) of 46 metastatic CRCCs were positive for hKIM-1. In contrast, hKIM-1 expression was not seen in normal renal tubules or in most nonrenal tumors. Low-level expression could be seen in a small percentage of urothelial, hepatocellular, and colon carcinomas.

To make effective progress towards a global reduction in obesity prevalence, there needs to be a focus on broader structural factors, beyond individual-level drivers of diet and physical activity. This article describes the use of a systems framework to develop obesity prevention policies with adolescents. The aim of this research was to use the group model building (GMB) method to identify young people's perceptions of the drivers of adolescent obesity in five European countries, as part of the EU-funded Co-Create project.

We used GMB with four groups of 16-18-year-olds in schools in each of the five European countries (The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal and the UK) to create causal loop diagrams (CLDs) representing their perceptions of the drivers of adolescent obesity. The maps were then merged into one, using a new protocol.

Two hundred and fifty-seven participants, aged 16-18 years, engaged in 20 separate system mapping groups, each of which generated 1 CLD. The findings were largely congruent between the countries. Three feedback loops in the merged diagram particularly stand out commercial drivers of unhealthy diets; mental health and unhealthy diets; social media use, body image and motivation to exercise.

GMB provides a novel way of eliciting from young people the system-based drivers of obesity that are relevant to them. Mental health issues, social media use and commercial practices were considered by the young people to be key drivers of adolescent obesity, subjects that have thus far had little or no coverage in research and policy.
