Orbitofrontal cortex thus represents decision confidence consistent with a metacognitive process that is useful for mediating confidence-guided economic decisions.Influenza A subtypes are categorized into group 1 and group 2 based on hemagglutinin (HA) sequence. Owing to the phylogenetic distance of HAs in different groups, antibodies that bind multiple HA subtypes across different groups are extremely rare. In this study, we demonstrated that an immunization with acid-treated HA antigen elicits germinal center (GC) B cells that bind multiple HA subtypes in both group 1 and group 2. The cross-group GC B cells utilized mostly one VH gene (1S56) and exhibited a sign of clonal evolution within GCs. The 1S56-lineage IgGs derived from GC B cells were able to bind to HA protein on infected cell surface but not to native form of HA protein, suggesting the cryptic nature of 1S56 epitope and its exposure in infected cells. Finally, the 1S56-lineage IgGs provided protection against lethal infection in Fc-dependent manner, independent of the virus neutralizing activity. Thus, we identified 1S56-lineage antibodies as unique stereotype for achieving cross-group influenza specificity. The antigens exposing the 1S56 epitope may be good candidates for broadly protective immunogens.Background This study compares the ability of liberal vs. restrictive intubation criteria to detect prolonged intubation and inhalation injury in burns patients with suspected inhalation injury. Emerging evidence suggests that using liberal criteria may lead to unnecessary intubation in some patients. Methods A single-center retrospective cohort study was conducted in adult patients with suspected inhalation injury admitted to intensive care at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham between April 2016 and July 2019. Liberal intubation criteria, as reflected in local guidelines, were compared to restrictive intubation criteria, as outlined in the American Burn Association guidelines. The number of patients displaying positive characteristics from either guideline was compared to the number of patients that had a prolonged intubation (more than 48 hours) and inhalation injury. Results In detecting a need for prolonged intubation (n=85), the liberal criteria had greater sensitivity (liberal=0.98 [0.94-1.00] vs restrictive=0.84 [0.75-0.93]; p=0.013). However, the restrictive criteria had greater specificity (restrictive=0.96 [0.89-1.00] vs liberal=0.48 [0.29-0.67]; p less then 0.001). In detecting inhalation injury (n=72), the restrictive criteria were equally sensitive (restrictive=0.94 [0.87-1.00] vs liberal=0.98 [0.84-1.00]; p=0.48) and had greater specificity [restrictive=0.86 [0.72-1.00] vs. liberal=0.04 [0.00-0.13]; p less then 0.001). In patients who met liberal but not restrictive criteria, 65% were extubated within 48 hours and 90% did not have inhalation injury. Conclusion Liberal intubation criteria were more sensitive at detecting a need for prolonged intubation, whilst restrictive criteria were more specific. Most patients intubated based on liberal criteria alone were extubated within 48 hours. Restrictive criteria were highly sensitive and specific at detecting inhalation injury.Background and aims Leaf functional traits are strongly tied to growth strategies and ecological processes across species, but few efforts have linked intraspecific trait variation to performance across ontogenetic and environmental gradients. Plants are believed to shift towards more resource-conservative traits in stressful environments and as they age. However, uncertainty in how intraspecific trait variation aligns with plant age and performance in the context of environmental variation may limit our ability to use traits to infer ecological processes at larger scales. Methods We measured leaf physiological and morphological traits, canopy volume, and flowering effort for Artemisia californica (California sagebrush), a dominant shrub species in the coastal sage scrub community, under conditions of 50%, 100%, and 150% ambient precipitation for three years. In this study, we assessed the impact of polyploidy events on PSM characteristics in non-cultivated plants. Methods We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to compare composition and concentration of PSMs among closely-related plant species or species-complexes differing in ploidy level. Key results We assessed 53 studies that focus on PSMs among multiple cytotypes, of which only 14 studies compared concentration quantitatively among cytotypes. We found that whole genome duplication can have a significant effect on PSM concentration, however these effects are highly inconsistent. Conclusion Overall, there was no consistent effect of whole genome duplication on PSM concentrations or profiles.Robust recommendations for healthy diets and nutrition require careful synthesis of available evidence. Here, we present a semiautomated approach to annotate, link, and track the content of nutrition research manuscripts. We used the STROBE extension for nutritional epidemiology (STROBE-nut) reporting guidelines to manually annotate a sample of 15 articles and converted the semantic information into linked data in a Neo4j graph database through an automated process. Six summary statistics were computed to estimate the reporting completeness of the articles. The content structure, presence of essential study characteristics as well as the reporting completeness of the articles are visualized automatically from the graph database. The archived linked data are interoperable through their annotations and relations. Healthcare systems in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) rarely have access to allografts, which may contribute to limited survival of patients with large burns in these settings. Therefore, we aimed to describe the lessons learned from the implementation and maintenance of tissue banks in LMICs to guide system planning and organization. PubMed, MEDLINE, CINAHL, and World Health Organization (WHO) Catalog were systematically searched with database-specific language to represent a priori terms (e.g., skin, allograft, tissue bank) and all LMICs as defined by The World Bank. Data regarding tissue banking programs were extracted and described in a narrative synthesis. The search returned 3,346 records, and 33 reports from 17 countries were analyzed. Commonly reported barriers to ideal or planned implementation included high capital costs and operational costs per graft, insufficient training opportunities, opt-in donation schemes, and sociocultural stigma around donation and transplantation. Many lessons were learned from the implementation and management of tissue banks around the world. The availability of skin allografts can be improved through strategic investments in governance and regulatory structures, international cooperation initiatives, training programs, standardized protocols, and inclusive public awareness campaigns. Further, capacity-building efforts that involve key stakeholders may increase rates of pledges, donations, and transplantations. Some issues were ubiquitously reported and could be addressed by current and future tissue banking programs to ensure allograft availability for patients living in countries of all income levels.Currently, the main targets of drug therapy for ulcerative colitis [UC] are endoscopic and clinical remission.
