The Benefits and Drawbacks of a 3 Wheeled Pushchair
If you often walk across rough terrain, or want to exercise, a three-wheel pushchair is the best option. They are great if you need a buggy that can take on any terrain from busy high streets to woodland tracks.
Look for designs with front wheels that can be locked or turned. This will allow you more flexibility. Front and rear wheels that are larger also give you an easier riding on different surfaces.
Manoeuvrability
Manoeuvrability is among the main advantages of a 3 wheel pushchair. The wheels are set close together allowing the chassis to move and turn more easily than a conventional four wheel pushchair, making them ideal for busy streets and shops. Some models even have a pair of front wheels that can be locked and swivelled to provide additional maneuverability when required. The Roma Atlas, for example has two wheels placed closely together at the front and a clever swivel lock that gives it all the maneuverability of three wheels, with added stability.
A lot of our top-selling 3 wheelers come with a 4-in-1 travel systems which can convert from stroller to pram to toddler seat and car seat carrier as your child grows. This is a great option for those who plan to travel with your family or on frequent shopping trips. One example is the Baby Jogger Nipper pushchair that features Hauck's XL air wheels and a 360 swivel front wheel that can be locked and an adjustable suspension system that makes it suitable for all terrains including off-road and jogging after your child is old enough to be able to join in with you!
The ickle bubbling Nipper is a different alternative. It's an all-terrain stroller, with large puncture-proof tyres and a fantastic suspension that allows it to be used for both off-road adventures and smooth city pavements. It can be used from birth using the seat that can be reversible or carrycot compatible. It also comes with the ability to fold with one hand for easy storage in the boot and for travel to airports.
It's important to choose the correct wheels for your pushchair depending on where it will be used most. Moulded wheels are ideal for the city, but not so on more rugged terrain. If you are planning to take your pushchair off the paved surfaces, choose pneumatic tyres. 3 wheel buggy are able to handle rough terrain.
If you're looking for a model that can be used in both rural and urban environments, then take a look at our top-rated Bugaboo Fox 5 All Terrain pushchair. It's got all the great suspension and large wheels of an all-terrain model, but it's also a brilliant urban pushchair that has a lightweight frame, easy-to-use lockable front wheel and one-handed fold.
Stability
You can improve the stability of your buggy by searching for specific features. Certain models have an swiveling front wheel that can be locked to give additional stability when driving when riding on rough terrain. This can be especially useful for those who will be using your pushchair off-road, or for running as it gives you the confidence to walk on varying surfaces with ease.
Another great stability feature is suspension - this makes your buggy more comfortable to ride in for both baby and parents particularly on uneven ground. Some brands allow you to swap out different tyres so that you can tailor the performance of your pushchair to suit the terrain you will be taking it on.
You should consider investing in a three-wheeled pushchair with tires that are filled with air if you want a pushchair that is able to handle any terrain. These wheels will offer a smoother ride on bumps, and are less likely to be punctured than solid wheels. These wheels let you use your buggy on non-paved surfaces and can be used on many surfaces, including grass as well as sand and mud.
All-terrain strollers are usually wider than standard models, but there are still many fantastic options that do not compromise on maneuverability or stability. One of our favorites is the UPPAbaby Ridge which comes with numerous impressive features that allow it to be used for off-road and jogging (once your child is old enough). These include large, foam-filled, never-flat tyres and adjustable suspension, as well as a quick, one-handed folding.
The Bugaboo Fox 5 is another excellent stroller that is all-terrain. It is similar to the UPPAbaby, and has excellent suspension, large puncture-proof tyres, and a one handed fold. It's also compatible with a broad selection of car seats and is able to accommodate an infant carrier or carrycot as well. It's a little heavier than other 3-wheelers, however it's still an excellent choice for parents who wish to have their pushchair able to go on any terrain.
Weight
The drawback of strollers with three wheels is that they can be heavy, especially when you need to maneuver through rough terrain and kerbs. The bigger rear wheels on a 3-wheeler make up a higher overall weight than 4 wheelers which means that you'll require more strength to lift them, particularly when folding them.
All-terrain models are a great choice if you need a pushchair to handle rough terrain or the tarmac that is rocky. These models usually have particular features, such as an extremely sturdy suspension system as well as large puncture-proof tires. Nowadays, manufacturers are developing all-terrain pushchairs that have foam or gel-filled tyres which are designed not to go flat, so they don't require inflating.
UPPAbaby's Ridge all-terrain pushchair has an excellent selection of parent-friendly features that allow it navigate a variety of terrain easily. Including the ability to lock the front wheel, an easy and simple one-handed fold, a large basket and an adjustable handlebar. MFM reviewer Becky found that the Ridge was "very great for walks in woodlands, gravel tracks and market town cobbles".
Another brand to offer an all-terrain pushchair range is iCandy. Their latest all-terrain model the Core, is suitable for babies from birth and is combined with a carrycot or car seat adaptors. The iCandy Core has a host of features that make it an excellent all-terrain stroller, including big foam-filled tyres that never flatten and a fantastic suspension system. The Core is a bit heavier than other all-terrain pushchairs but it's lightweight enough to maneuver on rougher ground.
Folding
If you're looking for a pushchair that will take the roughest of terrain, then you may be interested in an all-terrain model. This kind of pushchair comes with large wheels on both the rear and front to make it easier to navigate bumpy off-road terrain. They'll typically have more durable suspension as well as larger puncture resistant tyres to avoid them getting blocked by sticks, grass or mud.
An excellent model of this kind of pushchair is the Mountain Buggy Ridge. This all-terrain model comes with many impressive features, like a an easy suspension, a large basket, one-handed steering, and a quick one-handed folding. It's also compatible with a carrycot and car seat (with adaptors) so can be used as early as birth, or even from six months old with the seat unit that faces the world.
Other all-terrain pushchairs include the Bugaboo Fox 5, which is a 3-wheeler that has some amazing off-road features. It comes with a huge 10kg basket that can be folded in one hand. The handlebar can also be adjusted with just one hand. It has a lockable wheel on the front and never-flat foam-filled tyres.
The GB Maris is a new attractive all-terrain pushchair that was launched recently at the Kind + Jugend trade fair. It is designed for kids who have moderate to light mobility requirements. It has soft, adjustable parts and the ability to recline. The front wheel can be locked and has a brake for foot to ensure safety and control.
If you're looking for a pushchair with 3 wheels or a four-wheeler, we carry many styles and features to fit your family. A majority of the models we sell feature hard-wearing, durable frames and tough wheels that will last for a long time, as well as fantastic storage solutions for all of your baby's belongings. They can also be folded up and put away in the trunk of your car or under the stairs when they are not in use. You'll be ready for your next trip with the family.
