During coffee harvest, picked berries fall to the ground where they serve as a reservoir for the coffee berry borer (CBB) which then infest coffee berries on the trees. This study tested the effect of fallen CBB-infested coffee berries on the infestation of coffee trees (Coffea arabica). Three-year-old trees were treated with either 0, 1, 5, 10, 15, or 20 CBB-infested berries placed on the root vicinity. The CBB infestation of coffee trees was sampled every 30 days during 6 months for four coffee productive cycles. The experiment was set up at four different locations comprising different altitudes (1,218; 1,381; 1,470; and 1,700 m.a.s.l.) and the measurements were taken during 4 years where the climatic events of El Niño, La Niña, Neutral, and transitions El Niño/La Niña were present. The results show that CBB-infested berries left on the ground are a reservoir of CBB for 140 ± 8.2 days and infest developing healthy coffee berries. In a climate Neutral year, one CBB-infested ground berry left on the ground infested on average 590.2 ± 142.2 berries in coffee trees grown at 1,218 m.a.s.l. At the same altitude, one CBB-infested ground berry resulted in 151.5 ± 29.1 infested tree berries during La Niña year and 959.0 ± 89.6 during El Niño year. The CBB infestation was positively correlated with temperature and negatively correlated with altitude (R2= 0.99 and R2= -0.96, respectively). This study highlights the importance of careful harvesting practices to prevent berries from falling to the ground, followed by ground sanitation to limit later infestation of the coffee crop.After 100 years of its description, the morphological circumscription of Smicridea aequalis Banks, 1920 is provided in this study by the integration of morphological characters of adult, pupal, and larval stages. Rare diseases affect <1 in 2000 people. Despite their rarity, they collectively affect ~30 million people across Europe. The aim of this article is to present the view of our European endocrine societies on the care of patients with rare endocrine conditions.
We evaluated the current situation of patients with rare endocrine disease and present the joint views of the European Society for Endocrinology (ESE) and the European Society for Pediatric Endocrinology (ESPE) on how the endocrine disciplines can support and contribute to a better health of patients with rare endocrine conditions in Europe.

Rare endocrine diseases can be found among inherited disorders, cancers, and conditions associated with metabolic disorders such as diabetes, calcium and bone metabolism, lipid metabolism, hypogonadism, and adrenal, pituitary, and thyroid dysfunction. According to the European Registries for Rare Endocrine conditions, there are over 440 distinct rare diseases that affect the endocrine system. Rare endocrine diseases are often chronic and life-threatening.

C3G and its metabolites possess higher absorption and bioavailability, and interaction with gut microbiota may enhance their health benefits. Various in vitro studies have shown the reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mitigating potential of C3G. However, in in vivo models, C3G exerts its cytoprotective properties by regulating the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/antioxidant-responsive element (ARE) pathway. Despite existing reports stating various health benefits of C3G, its antioxidant potential by modulating the Nrf2 pathway remains less identified. This review discusses the Nrf2-mediated antioxidant response of C3G in modulating oxidative stress against DNA damage, apoptosis, carcinogen toxicity, and inflammatory conditions. Dysregulated activation and crosstalk between many intracellular signaling pathways are implicated in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), such as the Janus Kinase/signal transducers and activators of transcription (JAK/STAT), Toll-like receptor/nuclear factor kappa B (TLR/NF-κB), phosphatidylinositide-3Kinase/protein kinase B/mammalian target of rapamycin (PI-3K/AKT/mTOR), the stress activated protein kinase/mitogen-activated protein kinase (SAPK/MAPK), and spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK) pathways. We developed a novel preparative regimen using fludarabine 180 mg/m2, intravenous busulfan 12.8 mg/m2, cytarabine 8 g/m2, and 4-Gy total body irradiation before cord blood transplantation (CBT) in patients older than 55 years with various hematological malignancies. All but one patient received graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis consisting of cyclosporine (CsA) and short-term methotrexate (sMTX). Thirty-three patients were included in this study, with a median age of 64 years (range 56-70). The disease risk index was high or very high in 67% of patients, and 73% had a disease status other than complete remission. The probabilities of overall survival and disease-free survival at 3 years were 60 and 57%, respectively. The cumulative incidences of relapse and non-relapse mortality at 3 years were 18 and 25%, respectively. Regimen-related toxicities were generally tolerable. Disease-free survivors (n = 20) stopped immunosuppressants at a median of 7.4 months (range 2.6-25.0), in all cases by the time of the last follow-up. In conclusion, this highly myeloablative conditioning regimen resulted in a high probability of disease-free, GVHD-free, immunosuppressant-free survival after single CBT.(190 words).
Ibrutinib is an antineoplastic agent that reduces B-cell proliferation by inhibiting Bruton's tyrosine kinase. We describes population pharmacokinetics of ibrutinib in healthy adults, and explores potential patient characteristics associated with ibrutinib pharmacokinetics.
A population pharmacokinetic modeling approach was applied to 39 healthy subjects. Modeling was performed using Monolix (v.2019R2). Serial blood samples to measure the plasma ibrutinib concentration were collected following the oral administration of 140 mg ibrutinib on two different occasions under fasting conditions. Demographic and clinical information were evaluated as possible predictors of ibrutinib pharmacokinetics during model development. Simulations (using mlxR R package v.4.0.2) following the administration of therapeutic doses were performed to explore the clinical implications of identified covariates on ibrutinib steady-state concentrations.
A two-compartment model with zero order absorption best fit the data. Inter-individual and inter-occasion variability were quantified by the proposed model. We identified smoking status as a significant covariate associated with ibrutinib clearance. Smoking was found to increase ibrutinib clearance by approximately 60%, which resulted in a reduction in simulated steady-state concentrations by around 40%.
The model can be used to simulate clinical trials or various dosing scenarios. The proposed model can be used to optimize ibrutinib dosing based on the smoking status.
