Biosurfactants are non-toxic, surface-active biomolecules capable of reducing surface tension (ST) and emulsifying interface at a comparably lower concentration than commercial surfactants. This study focuses on producing biosurfactants by Pseudomonas aeruginosa P7815 in batch and fed-batch bioreactor systems using waste cooking oil (WCO) as the sole carbon source. The batch study showed a 92% of WCO biodegradation ability of P. aeruginosa producing 11 g L-1 of biosurfactant. To enhance this biosurfactant production, a fed-batch oil feeding strategy was opted to extend the stationary phase of the bacterium and minimize the effects of substrate deprivation. An enhanced biosurfactant production of 16 g L-1 (i.e. 1.5 times of batch study) was achieved at a feed rate of 5.7 g L-1d-1 with almost 94% of WCO biodegradation activity. The biosurfactant was characterized as rhamnolipid using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and its interfacial characterization showed ST reduction to 29 ± 1 mN m-1 and effective emulsification stability at pH value of 4, temperature up to 40 °C and salinity up to 40 g L-1. The biosurfactant exhibited antibacterial activity with minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 100 µg mL-1 and 150 µg mL-1 for pathogenic E. hirae and E. coli, respectively. These findings suggest that biodegradation of WCO by P. aeruginosa in a fed-batch cultivation strategy is a potential alternative for the economical production of biosurfactants, which can be further explored for biomedical, cosmetics, and oil washing/recovery applications.Chronic anthropogenic disturbance (CAD) and climate change represent two of the major threats to biodiversity globally, but their combined effects are not well understood. Here we investigate the individual and interactive effects of increasing CAD and decreasing rainfall on the composition and taxonomic (TD), functional (FD) and phylogenetic diversity (PD) of plants possessing extrafloral nectaries (EFNs) in semi-arid Brazilian Caatinga. EFNs attract ants that protect plants against insect herbivore attack and are extremely prevalent in the Caatinga flora. EFN-bearing plants were censused along gradients of disturbance and rainfall in Catimbau National Park in north-eastern Brazil. We recorded a total of 2243 individuals belonging to 21 species. Taxonomic and functional composition varied along the rainfall gradient, but not along the disturbance gradient. There was a significant interaction between increasing disturbance and decreasing rainfall, with CAD leading to decreased TD, FD and PD in the most arid areas, and to increased TD, FD and PD in the wettest areas. We found a strong phylogenetic signal in the EFN traits we analysed, which explains the strong matching between patterns of FD and PD along the environmental gradients. The interactive effects of disturbance and rainfall revealed by our study indicate that the decreased rainfall forecast for Caatinga under climate change will increase the sensitivity of EFN-bearing plants to anthropogenic disturbance. This has important implications for the availability of a key food resource, which would likely have cascading effects on higher trophic levels.To better define roles that astrocytes and microglia play in Alzheimer's disease (AD), we used single-nuclei RNA-sequencing to comprehensively characterise transcriptomes in astrocyte and microglia nuclei selectively enriched during isolation post-mortem from neuropathologically defined AD and control brains with a range of amyloid-beta and phospho-tau (pTau) pathology. Significant differences in glial gene expression (including AD risk genes expressed in both the astrocytes [CLU, MEF2C, IQCK] and microglia [APOE, MS4A6A, PILRA]) were correlated with tissue amyloid or pTau expression. The differentially expressed genes were distinct between with the two cell types and pathologies, although common (but cell-type specific) gene sets were enriched with both pathologies in each cell type. Astrocytes showed enrichment for proteostatic, inflammatory and metal ion homeostasis pathways. Merestinib Pathways for phagocytosis, inflammation and proteostasis were enriched in microglia and perivascular macrophages with greater tissue amyloid, but IL1-related pathway enrichment was found specifically in association with pTau. We also found distinguishable sub-clusters in the astrocytes and microglia characterised by transcriptional signatures related to either homeostatic functions or disease pathology. Gene co-expression analyses revealed potential functional associations of soluble biomarkers of AD in astrocytes (CLU) and microglia (GPNMB). Our work highlights responses of both astrocytes and microglia for pathological protein clearance and inflammation, as well as glial transcriptional diversity in AD.
To evaluate uterine arteries (UA) of potential living donors for uterus transplantation (UTx) by comparison of CT angiography (CTA), digital subtraction angiography (DSA), and MR angiography (MRA) with care taken to minimize radiation doses.

Prospective donors for a clinical UTx trial were included. link2 CTA, DSA, and MRA measurements in three predefined segments of the UAs were evaluated. Radiation doses were estimated and 1-year graft survival was recorded.

Twelve potential donors (age 37-62years) were investigated. There was no difference in visualized average UA lumen diameter when comparing CTA (mean 2.0mm, SD 0.4), DSA (mean 2.1mm, SD 0.6), and MRA (mean 2.0mm, SD 0.3). MRA was not able to fully evaluate 10 (43%) out of 23 UA that proved to be patent on DSA. One UA was not identified by any of the modalities, and three MRA-absent UAs were identified by both CTA and DSA. The estimated mean effective dose was lower for DSA (5.1mSv, SD 2.8) than CTA (7.1mSv, SD 2.0), but not significantly (p value = 0.06)and contrast media doses.
• For uterine transplantation, pelvic MRI with MRA provides information of the uterine structure and of the diameters of uterine arteries in living donors. • Failure of MRA to demonstrate uterine arteries could be followed by CTA which will visualize the uterine arteries in a majority of cases. If MRA and additional CTA provide inconclusive results, the uterine arteries should be further evaluated by DSA. • Information of CTA can be used in the angio-system for DSA settings to minimize the radiation and contrast media doses.
To develop a nomogram based on pretreatment dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) to predict pathologic complete response (pCR) after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in patients with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC).

A total of 108 female patients with TNBC treated with neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by surgery between January 2017 and October 2020 were enrolled. The patients were randomly divided into the primary cohort (n = 87) and validation cohort (n = 21) at a ratio of 41. The pretreatment DCE-MRI and clinicopathological features were reviewed and recorded. Univariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to determine the independent predictors of pCR in the primary cohort. A nomogram was developed based on the predictors, and the predictive performance of the nomogram was evaluated by the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC). The validation cohort was used to test the predictive model.

We aimed to define the findings of the VOR using head-impulse tests (HITs) and their differential diagnostic value in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple system atrophy (MSA). From December 2019 to January 2021, 30 patients with PD and 23 patients with MSA (17 with cerebellar-type MSA and 6 with parkinsonian-type MSA) had a video-oculographic recording of HITs at two university hospitals in South Korea. Reversed (p = 0.034) and perverted (p = 0.015) catch-up saccades were more frequently observed in MSA than in PD during HITs. The gain difference between the ACs and the PCs were larger in MSA than in PD (p = 0.031), and positively correlated with the disease duration in patients with MSA (Spearman's coefficient = 0.512, p = 0.012). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that reversed (p = 0.044) and perverted (p = 0.039) catch-up saccades were more frequently associated with MSA than with PD during HITs. In conclusion, HITs aid in differentiation of MSA from PD, and may serve as a surrogate marker for the clinical decline.Social media can be an innovative communication method between patients and physicians that help to overcome time limitation in outpatient clinics. In this study, we investigated how patients with rheumatic diseases (RD) and physicians use and are willing to use social media platforms to communicate with each other. We used a face-to-face survey that provides information on current social media habits and communication methods of rheumatology patients and physicians. We studied 399 (135 M/262 F) patients with RD with a median age of 45 (IQR 34) years. We also studied 55 (30 M/25F) rheumatologists with a median age of 37 (IQR34-44) years. Among patients with RD, 288 (72%) used at least one social media site within the previous month. Facebook was the most preferred social media platform, whereas Twitter and Instagram were favored by males and higher educated patients. While 17% of the patients with RD could communicate with their physicians outside of the hospital, 94% expressed that they would like to. link3 Most patients (74%) defined social media as a reliable source for health-related information, yet 90% declared that they would like to obtain information about their disease using face-to-face communication. Forty-two (83%) rheumatologists were using social media and reported that they already communicate or would like to communicate with their patients outside of the hospital. Internet-based mobile applications and social media platforms are promising communication and educational tools for rheumatology patients.Cytoreductive surgery in combination with hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy has revolutionized the survival and the quality of life in selected patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis. Preoperative CT is important for the selection of patients that may benefit from cytoreductive surgery and is useful for surgical planning. There are several tasks for the radiologist during CT interpretation to describe cancerous implants on a "site-by-site" basis in the peritoneum, ligaments, mesenteries and visceral surfaces, to analyze patterns of involvement and to estimate the disease burden. Knowledge of the correlation between the CT and the surgical findings enhances the understanding of the disease and facilitates the communication between radiologists and surgeons.
Effective therapy of periprosthetic femur fractures of the hip (PPF) are challenging due to patients' frailty and complexity of fracture patterns. The aim of this cohort study was to analyze the radiological and functional outcome following PPF.

A retrospective, multicenter study in the period 2009-2019 of patients with PPF at two level I trauma centers in Germany was performed. PPF were classified according to the Vancouver classification system. Demographic data, American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) classification, type of surgery, complications, and reoperation rate were obtained from patient records. The functional outcome was assessed by the modified Harris-Hip Score (mHHS), general health using the EQ-5D, and radiological outcome by Beals & Tower (B&T) criteria.

A total of 129 patients with a mean age of 79years (range 43-102) were included. 70% of all patients were female and 68% of the patients had an ASA score ≥ 3. 20 patients suffered from a Vancouver A, 90 from a Vancouver B and 19 from a Vancouver C fracture.
